Posh George

This past week, The Daily Beast published a fascinating, detailed article (link here) about "Posh George," an extremely shady convicted felon and money launderer who is connected to Donald Trump, reactionary British ultra-nationalist Nigel Farage, and Russian mobsters.

Given Posh George's background, you'd think Trump and the GOP would be trying to run away from him as fast as possible, but instead they embraced him and brought him into the tent. Farage was personally invited to the 2016 Republican National Convention by Donald Trump as his special VIP guest, and Posh George, who is British, was Farage's stag date and constant companion at the event.

Given Posh George's expertise in money laundering, it's no surprise that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is looking at him closely as part of his criminal investigation into Trump and his associates. Posh George's plea agreement in his felony conviction likely includes an agreement to cooperate in all future investigations in which he is a party of interest, so Mueller's people have the perfect leverage to get him to tell all.

Throughout this long, sordid Russiagate scandal, it's amazing the number of times Trump has intersected with an international money laundering conspiracy. There's more smoke here than an entire national forest on fire.

A Lie a Minute

Only very infrequently does Donald Trump give an interview to any media outlet that does not adore him. Usually he appears on Fox News and various arch-conservative religious networks.

So Washington watchers were surprised when, on Thursday, Trump gave an impromptu half-hour interview to a reporter at The New York Times, a newspaper he considers in the enemy camp. As could be expected, Trump told an absurd number of lies.

To that end, the very helpful Daniel Dale at The Toronto Star published a sourced list (link here) of the twenty-five times Trump lied during the interview. That adds up to about a lie a minute, considering parts of the interview were simply idle chatter.

The biggest lie is the President's claim that his campaign did not collude with any Russian entity but that Democrats did. That, of course, is so preposterous that one is left wondering why he even said it. Did he think The New York Times readers couldn't see through his bullshit?

In a way, these Trump lie-fests serve a valuable purpose: they keep establishing how he's so relentlessly dishonest, that when he claims to speak the truth, we know what's coming out of his mouth is false.

And thanks once again to The Toronto Star for their excellent reportage. They have been telling truth-to-power with Trump all year.

The Road to Nowhere

It's official: odious homophobe and reactionary arch-conservative Roy Moore has officially lost the race for Alabama's open Senate seat (details here). The election was officially certified yesterday.

Moore had attempted at the last minute to stop the certification by petitioning for an emergency restraining order, but that attempt was slapped down by a state judge of Moore's own party. The Alabama GOP seems to want to see the back of Moore out the door.

The hateful Moore has close to zero chance of any recourse now. He could try to get a federal judge to stop his victorious opponent, Doug Jones, from being seated in the Senate, but the chances of that are less than slim.

Moore attempted to claim massive voter fraud in filing his emergency petition before the court but provided utterly no credible proof. He actually tried to claim that a high voter turnout was proof of fraud. It's called democracy, Roy.

As one prominent election law expert stated: Moore's argument amounted to "I should have won under the exit poll and all of this voting by African-Americans must show fraud" (link here).

Moore could appear as a candidate in another election soon, but that might be for a statewide race next year. At least he won't be terrorizing Washington.

The Target

Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has a job in the West Wing, seems to be increasingly under the microscope as part of both Special Counsel Robert Mueller's criminal investigation of the President and his associates and a separate investigation being conducted by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn.

Yesterday, The Washington Post broke the story (link here) that federal investigators are currently examining details of a $285 million loan from scandal-plagued Deutsche Bank and Kushner's real estate company made a month before the election last year. Earlier this year, Deutsche Bank coughed up $425 million to settle charges it had engaged in money laundering for Russian organized crime syndicates.

This is not the only federal investigation of Kushner's real estate deals to come out of the Brooklyn federal prosecutor's office. Kushner's company was already being investigated for allegations it was trading American visas for investments in the firm (details here).

Also yesterday, in an unrelated development, veteran investigative reporter Michael Isikoff broke the story that Mueller's criminal investigation is examining whether Kushner and Trump himself, as well as the Republican National Committee (RNC), help Russia use digital trolling to target American voters (link here).

Mueller is reportedly investigating whether Russian troll and bot operations gained assistance from a joint RNC and Trump campaign data operation, which may have been managed by Kushner. Investigators also are digging to see if Russia provided Trump's campaign with voter information stolen by Russian hackers.

It was already known that the Trump campaign's data company had been trying to obtain emails stolen from Hillary Clinton's campaign.

These developments add fuel to speculations that Kushner will be targeted in Mueller's next wave of criminal indictments. Remember, Trump's former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has flipped and is cooperating with prosecutors, which may be the source for this potential evidence.

If Kushner is indicted, seeing how Trump reacts will be critically important and could trigger a constitutional crisis if he tries to intercede. Stay tuned.

Worse Than Imagined

Eugene Robinson at The Washington Post wrote a great column earlier this week (link here) with the title "Trump’s first year was even worse than feared."

I can't say I feared what Donald Trump would do but I certainly imagined he'd be a terrible President. And it turns out he is a much worse at his job than I thought he could.

Deeply corrupt men elevated to the presidency have somehow risen to the job. Chester Arthur is certainly a good example of that. Up to and including when he was Vice President of the United States, he actively controlled a massive pay-to-play network engaging in open bribery and graft.

But when Arthur became President upon the death of James Garfield, he abdicated his corrupt political boss ways and refused to do the bidding of men from whom he had previously accepted bribes and favors.

That is certianly not the case with Trump. The depth of corruption and self-dealing in the White House now is worse than at any time in American history.

On Saturday, The New York Times published a very detailed article (link here) about how Donald Trump is attempting to stop not only as much immigration to the United States as possible, except if you're a white person, but how he even wants to prohibit people from certain races and countries from visiting the United States.

Not only does this fly in the face of America's centuries-old history as "the land of immigrants," it also underscores how Trump does not understand that US law and the constitution prohibit him from limiting entry to one ethic sub-group or set of nations.

The article also reveals, once again, that Trump is a shameless racist. Six individuals attending the meeting confirmed that Trump said the following:

When he learned 15,000 Haitians had entered the country with visas this year, he said they "all have AIDS."

When he learned 40,000 Nigerians had entered the country with visas this year, he said that once they saw the United States, they would not "go back to their huts" in Africa.

He was utterly silent about visa stats for white people entering from Europe.

Notwithstanding Trump's racist slur about Nigerians, he clearly doesn't understand visitors and immigrants from their nation. Nigerians immigrating to the United States have the highest level of education when compared to immigrants from all other nations in the world (details here).

Intelligent, highly educated immigrants have a higher earning potential and greater likelihood of creating jobs than the average native-born American. Trump should be begging more immigrants like this to enter the country.

But, of course, his racism prevents this.

On Thursday, Newsweek published a long and detailed article (link here) on Donald Trump's dubious business practices with scandal-plagued Deutsche Bank, an institution which not to long ago admitted it was engaged in illegal money laundering for shady Russians and others.

The piece begs the question: is the truth about Trump's possible connection to Vladimir Putin and Russian organized crime hidden in the bank's vaults? Whatever the answer, Special Counsel Robet Mueller is now examining bank records as part of his criminal investigation into the President and his associates.

The linked article is actually excerpted from a new book just published last month titled Collusion: Secret Meetings, Dirty Money, and How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win, by Luke Harding, a former Moscow-based foreign correspondent for The Guardian. I recently read Harding's book, already a best seller, and highly recommend it to everyone here.

The book will really open your eyes about the real Donald Trump, a picture the President doesn't want us to see.

Quarter to quarter growth was stronger during some of Obama's years in office, well exceeding anything during Trump's first year. And the American stock market is lagging behind stock indices in France, Germany, Japan, China, India, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and many more.

The stock market has been on an upward trend since early in Obama's first year in office, a trend that has been sustaining for nine years now. Many market experts expect a large and painful correction soon when the bubble finally bursts.

What will Trump be saying when the stock market drops like a rock? Will he take credit for that, too?

The Pawn

Newsweek published a very troubling article yesterday (link here) about what some veteran intelligence officials think of Donald Trump's overly cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin, Russia's autocratic quasi-dictator.

Some of them are actually worried that Trump has become a pawn outright controlled by Putin. If true, this is arguably one of the gravest threats the United States has ever faced. It's far worse than when the Kremlin had moles like Kim Philby inside the highest levels of Britain's intelligence operations.

Putin isn't just a head of state. He's a former KGB spymaster. He has considerable experience working foreign pawns to do his bidding.

And Trump is easily manipulated. He can be controlled by flattery. He can be tricked into ignoring what doesn't flatter him. And he's pathologically unable to keep his mouth shut and has, more than once, blabbed highly sensitive intelligence to dangerous parties.

Trump is too emotionally unstable to actually be a Putin agent, but he's the perfect pawn. Vladimir Putin trained for decades to handle insecure people like Trump. And the fact that Republicans in Washington are busy looking the other way creates an ideal environment for Russian espionage.

Hopefully Trump can be removed before he does too much damage. Vice President Michael Pence would be a terrible President, but arguably he'd be wary of Russia and not so easily maniuplated.

Esquire magazine will run a feature article in their February 2018 issue (already available online here) about the "Never Trumpers," those Republicans who still refuse to support the President. In the piece, the writer reveals how The Wall Street Journal last year killed two pieces about Trump's many connections to organized crime because the paper was starting to veer toward supporting the eventual nominee.

The piece includes no further detail about what exactly the Journal piece might have revealed. Perhaps some hacker will someday soon crack their servers and publish the piece.

Other media, however, has published articles detailing Trump's tangled connections with organized crime. In light of the Esquire tease, I thought I'd focus on some other notable media reporting on Trump and the mob.

In March 2016, the Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact verified that then-presidential candidate Ted Cruz's remarks about Trump and the mob were true (link here). That article in turn links to a number of other published pieces linking Trump and organized crime.

In May 2016, Politico published a detailed piece (link here) with the title "Just What Were Donald Trump's Ties to the Mob?" That article was published by a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and lawyer and details at length the man threads connecting Trump with organized crime.

More recently, The Guardian published a well documented article (link here) with the title "Trump's bid for Sydney casino 30 years ago rejected due to 'mafia connections’" -- not much subtlety there.

What does this all mean for us today? Trump has so many scandals swirling around him that mob connection stories now are are not likely to bring him down.

What could happen, however, is if Special Counsel Robert Mueller eventually pursues any of these avenues as part of his criminal investigation into Trump and associates. There's no deadline for Mueller to wrap up his investigation and all signs indicate it will run through the end of 2018, at least.

So for now, we'll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned.
