Cruel, Inept, and Dangerous
This week, the Washington Post obtained an advance copy of the forthcoming tell-all book by a Trump administration official who still works in the Oval Office. Their coverage of it (link here) is titled "Book by 'Anonymous' describes Trump as cruel, inept and a danger to the nation."
While there are many new revelations in this book, the fact that they're outrageous no longer comes as a surprise. The author underscores how Trump is incurious, arrogant, incompetent, mercurial, and more, traits that are very much seen in public and therefor give credence to what the book asserts.
The unnamed author drops enough hints to suggest he or she works within the West Wing itself, in close proximity to Trump. Needless to say, because of the anonymity, the author will be less believed than if he or she unmasked him or herself, something the author claims is a possibility.
I think the author would be better served to step forward and identify him or herself. Instantly the book would become more credible, particularly if the person is well known and regularly seen on television.
Perhaps Anonymous plans to do that next year right smack in the middle of the election season. If so, that could create the greatest impact and be the most damaging to Trump. And if it happens, my money is on Kellyanne Conway as the secret insider.

From Bad to Worse
Yesterday afternoon, the Wall Street Journal broke the story (link here) that Donald Trump's quid pro quo campaign with Ukraine began under that country's previous president, much earlier than previously revealed, at least as early as February, five months before an Oval Office call that linked military assistance in return for damaging information that would hurt Joe Biden's candidacy.
The effort on Trump's behalf was orchestrated by Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who in turn was assisted by Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, the latter two who were recently indicted by a federal prosecutor. Parnas is currently believed to be cooperating with investigators for the House Intelligence Committee as it conducts an impeachment investigation against Trump.
Hopefully House investigators were already aware of this earlier effort before the story broke and that it's already part of the ongoing impeachment inquiry. Given that public testimony is due to begin next week, we may soon learn the answer to that question.

Pacific Coast Highway

Lawless
On Wednesday, the Washington Post broke the story (link here) that Donald Trump wanted the attorney general to hold a press conference to announce that the President had broken no laws on the now infamous telephone call with the Ukrainian head of state when he demanded a public investigation of his political rival.
This incident perfectly demonstrates how Trump has no respect for the rule of law. He sees the attorney general not as serving the nation but instead as a personal servant catering to all whims of the President.
As well, it demonstrates how Trump doesn't seem to understand that a President can be impeached for actions that aren't necessarily illegal. It's a political process, not a criminal process, but he seems clueless to this fact.
Further, it also demonstrates how Trump doesn't seem to understand the potential impeachment is about far more than just that single telephone call. It's about the repeated efforts of Trump and his administration to subvert national interests in favor of the President's personal interests.
The fact that Trump cannot grasp simple basics of his own possible impeachment underscores his incompetence and total unfitness for the job.

Virginia
I wrote yesterday about how Donald Trump had failed to deliver the vote in Kentucky this week after campaigning there for the governor. Similarly, he campaigned for the Republican Party in Virginia where his presence turned out to be poisonous after Democrats gained control of the state legislature.
Once Republicans are out of majority control in January, Virginia will therefore almost certainly be the necessary thirty-eighth state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution (details here).
This nicely demonstrates how smaller, off-year elections can nonetheless have major national implications. That's why it's necessary to vote in every single election, not just the presidential year. Elections have consequences — every single one of them.

Kentucky
Yesterday was election day in many American states. Three had governor's races, all in deep-red GOP-dominated states, including Kentucky.
And in Kentucky last night, the results showed the startling news that a Democrat has unseated the Republican incumbent (details here).
The stunning upset was also a resounding defeat for Donald Trump, who campaigned heavily for the sitting GOP governor. At a rally in Kentucky on Monday night for the Republican candidate, Trump told the crowd: "You gotta vote because if you lose, it sends a really bad message. It just sends a bad and they’re going to build it up.... You can’t let that happen to me."
Trump also conceded at a campaign appearance on Monday night in Kentucky that a loss by the Republican governor would reflect very badly on the President and would represent "the greatest defeat in the history of the world."
Republican senators undoubtedly have seen these results and are collectively shitting their pants right now. They now realize that clinging to Trump in an impeachment removal vote might cost them their Senate seat, even if they're from a deeply red state.

Another Very Bad Day
Two developments yesterday were really bad news for Donald Trump.
First, a federal appeals court ruled that Trump's accountants must turn over eight years of his tax returns to the Manhattan District Attorney (details here) who is conducting a criminal investigation into the President and his associates.
Trump has lost every case he's brought to stop release of his tax returns to various entities. It's like he knows he has no legal ground to stand on but has merely brought suit to delay release.
Yesterday's ruling can be appealed to the Supreme Court. However, it's entirely up to their discretion to review the matter. But if they do take up the case, that could mean a decision would come down by early summer 2020, which could be politically very damaging for him.
Also yesterday, the House Intelligence Committee released transcripts from two witnesses who had testified behind closed doors, including the former ambassador to Ukraine (details here). One detail that really jumped out, demonstrating the complete corruption of the Trump administration, was the revelation that the ambassador could keep her job if she posted praise of Trump on Twitter.
More testimony transcripts are due to be released this week, including possibly today.

Flash forward three years later — after Mexico told Trump to get stuffed — and the only border wall that's been built is near San Diego and replaces an existing wall. That's cost American taxpayers around $10 billion so far.
And now comes the Washington Post with a breaking story (link here) about how smugglers are already cutting through the wall with common powertools that can be found in any hardware store.
So in other words, the wall is worthless. Of course, scores of experts have repeatedly told Trump this would happen but, of course, he didn't listen to them because he mistakenly and foolishly thinks he's smarter than everyone else.
Developing a sensible border policy that actually works is an extremely complex and difficult task. That kind of hard work is impossible for Trump. So instead he touted an add-water-and-stir policy that would appeal to the ill informed, low-information voter. But that policy was a chimera, and as we now see, it was nothing but hot air.
And at least $10 billion have been wasted on this folly. That's $10 billion that could have been much better spent in a million ways, including developing and instituting a sensible border policy that would actually work.

In America's 230 years of constitutional existence, there have only been eighteen impeachments and, to date, only two of those of a President (most of the remainder were for judges). That works out to an average of once every twelve years. And as Lepore's fascinating piece demonstrates, the rules each time have been quite fluid.
Of course, it's quite telling that Trump's defenders keep attacking the impeachment process underway. That's because they know the substance of the complaint is quite damaging to the President, so they don't even want to go there and are trying to keep you distracted. Don't let them.

The Process
The Bulwark published an excellent article on Thursday (link here) that serves as a sort of primer on what will happen during the process leading up to a final House vote on impeachment, which likely will come time late this year or early next year. From there, the matter passes to the Senate, where the President will be tried.
Basically, the piece breaks down the process into three phases. Right now, we're somewhere near the end of the first phase and will soon be in the second phase. And that's likely when the headlines will start to be particularly damning for Donald Trump.

The Corrupt Parole Officer
A hung parole officer extorts sex out of a beefy, muscular ex-con by threatening to send him back to prison unless he submits. This is why I could never be a parole officer, because I'd have a hard time keeping from doing the same thing. Historic
The House of Representatives moved another important big step forward yesterday toward impeaching Donald Trump by approving guidelines for public hearings and release of witness testimony from closed-door hearings (details here and here).
Ever since the impeachment inquiry began, Republicans have complained the process has been in secret. So when a vote comes before the House to end that secrecy, House Republicans unanimously voted against it. Talk about hypocrisy.
And they will soon rue the day they wished for everything to be transparent and public, when more than a dozen witness transcripts are released, directly linking Trump to illegal abuses of power. And then they will go from bad to much worse when witness after witness publicly testifies on live television about the most corrupt President in American history.
Buckle up and stay tuned.
