The Boy Who Cried War
The children's fable about the boy who called wolf is well known. A mischievous young shepherd repeatedly alerts villagers that a wolf is attacking their flocks. When they rush to assist, they learn there was never any wolf.
But then one day a wolf really does appear and attacks the flock. The boy alerts the villagers but they do nothing, thinking it's another false alarm. The boy returns to try and drive off the wolf alone, but that fails, and both the flock and the boy are killed.
Similarly, Donald Trump has lied so much as President that people don't believe anything he says. Reliable factchecking tabulators count his lies as President as somewhere between twelve and fourteen thousand.
Hence, it's difficult to believe anything he or his administration says about the attack on Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has repeatedly been asked what the imminent threat was as justification for the attack. Although the administration is required by law to release such information, Pompeo refuses to say (details here) other than vaguely there was a deadly threat. And we should believe him why?
Two former White House officials wrote a piece for Foreign Policy magazine (link here) that reflected deep suspicion about the veracity of any such claims. "What the nation needs to know most urgently is whether there was any substantive intelligence indicating that Suleimani was orchestrating a major military or terrorist campaign against the United States. As former policymakers with extensive experience in countering Iran, we are struck by statements from within the administration suggesting that there was none."
To this end, David Leonhardt at the New York Times wrote an excellent column yesterday (link here) with the title "No One Believes Trump" and the secondary title of "Which isn’t good in an international crisis."
An excerpt: "Trump has no credibility. His political rise was built on a lie (about Barack Obama’s birthplace). He has told thousands of untruths since becoming president. He appears to be lying again — about why he ordered the assassination of Qassim Suleimani, Iran’s most significant military leader."
Instead of crying wolf, the boy this time is crying war.
As a motive, there are strong signs that Trump was thinking as much about his reelection than any supposed threat from Iran, as noted by the Washington Post (details here), when he gave the order to attack the Iranian general. Per the Post piece: "Trump, who rarely makes major moves without first calculating the ramifications for his popularity and self-image, has confided to advisers that he sees a political upside in his hard-line approach to Iran at the dawn of this year’s campaign, according to two White House officials and several senior Republicans."
At the same time, there are also strong signals that a wag-the-dog strategy is in play, where an administration gins up an international crisis to distract attention from a domestic scandal, which would be Trump's impeachment in this case. Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, admitted as much on national television when he directly linked Adam Schiff, a key figure driving Trump's impeachment, with the Suleimani attack (details here).
One can only hope, as the Iran crisis drags on, and the reprisal attacks come, that people will remember the President is probably lying, no matter what he says.

He Says Yes
Yesterday, Donald Trump's former national security advisor made the public announcement that he would testify at Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate if called (details here).
Bolton is widely known to have been vehemently opposed to Trump's corrupt attempt to extort Ukraine into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden's son in hopes it would help the President's reelection chances. Bolton would leave the room in anger when the scheme was discussed and also referred to it as a "drug deal."
However, over the weekend, Bolton made it known that he approved of the US airstrike that killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. Hence, some fear Bolton agreeing to testify, an announcement made only days later, means he would give Trump cover in the impeachment trial.
Others, however, believe the opposite. As per the article linked above: "Former White House officials and people close to Bolton have indicated that his testimony would likely be damning to Trump and put additional pressure on moderate Republicans to consider convicting him."
I agree with this latter point of view. I think Bolton would like to see Trump gone. The Vice President is known to be very hawkish on Iran and was one of the officials pushing Trump to target Soleimani. He would be perfectly happy with Pence as President.
For now, the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he wants a quick, orchestrated impeachment trial with no witnesses. But with someone like Bolton publicly making it known he wants to testify, that puts pressure on Senate Republicans to at lease make an attempt at objectivity.
I think the damage done to the GOP with a sham trial without witnesses — what happened at Soviet show trials — would be greater than the potential harm to Trump. Time will tell if Senate Republicans take this more rational route.

The Fallout
The fallout has been ugly since Donald Trump's rash decision to kill Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. Trump has threatened further, more brutal actions against Iran and has also threatened to bomb Iraanian cultural sites; both such actions would violate international law and be considered war crimes (details here).
As a result of the attack, Iran has abandoned the international agreement to limit its nuclear capacities (details here). As well, Iraq's parliament has voted to expel all US military personnel in country, a departure that would greatly benefit the terrorist group ISIS.
America's allies and other heads of state have harshly criticized Trump's reckless decision. His decision in 2018 to abandon the Iranian peace accord, ostensibly for the reason that it should be tougher, has now resulted in no agreement at all.
In short, Trump's Iranian policy has backfired spectacularly. He made perfect the enemy of good, and now he has neither (details here).
And, much worse, he has made the world a far more dangerous place.

Blatant Obstruction
Donald Trump and his administration's repeated obstruction of justice has become chronic. A new one surfaced on Friday when the White House announced it was ignoring the law and a court order and would refuse to turn over twenty emails related to the Ukraine scandal in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit (details here).
Trump and his people are ignoring long-established law. Richard Nixon went down this road when he refused to turn over the now infamous Watergate tapes. The Supreme Court ruled he was not allowed to ignore court orders.
This has become a repeated pattern for Trump and his people: ignore the law, ignore court orders, and then drag it into court. Appeal every time you lose, which happens in nearly every case. Use the courts to delay and drag out the whole process.
Fortunately, in this matter, the plaintiff that brought the FOIA lawsuit is the New York Times and they will not hesitate to appeal.

The Aftermath
Would you use a flamethrower to kill a fly trapped in your house? How about using a stick of dynamite? Or a hand grenade?
The answer is obvious: of course not.
You've probably heard that a United States drone killed Qassim Suleimani early yesterday. He headed Iran's powerful Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
Suleimani was killed along with several Iraqi militia leaders backed by Tehran (details here). The strike was ordered by Donald Trump.
Make no mistake about it, Suleimani was a very evil man who had cause the deaths of many innocent people. But with that said, the manner by which Trump brought about his demise will almost certainly cause more problems than were solved.
And by problems I mean more deaths of innocent people, more regional violence, and greater political instability in the Middle East. In short, this strike may do down as the act which starts a regional war.
Condemnation of Trump's actions was swift and strong. You can find a lot of it easily online. I'll focus attention here on two pieces.
One is an excellent op-ed written by a Middle East expert in London (link here) with the title "The Soleimani assassination was short-sighted for US strategy and destabilizing for Iraq and the region."
An excerpt: "The United States’ assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, was short-sighted, counter-strategic and will only further destabilize Iraq. Washington claims that the strike was carried out to thwart an 'imminent attack,' with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asserting that the U.S. remains committed to de-escalation with Iran. But the strike will do only the opposite, fueling tensions and likely ensuring retaliation. This will jeopardize U.S. policy and presence, further endanger civilians in Iraq (including those leading an ongoing pro-democracy movement) and bring further instability to the region."
The other is an analytical piece from Jonathan Chait (link here) titled "Trump Thinks Attacking Iran Will Get Him Reelected. He’s Wrong."
An excerpt: "Trump’s allies have framed the issue as being about Qasem Soleimani’s moral culpability, or Iran’s responsibility for escalating the conflict. And it is certainly true that Iran is a nasty, aggressive, murderous regime. But none of this refutes the fact that Trump’s Iran policy is failing on its own terms. Having violated a diplomatic agreement on the premise that doing so would not lead to war, they are now blaming Iran for the war they insisted would never happen."
While Trump's action was reckless and ill advised, he would not be alone in a group of Presidents who have carelessly used military action. (Yes, George W. Bush, we're looking at you.) But if he did this because he thought it would help him get re-elected, he will have proven himself to be even more craven and corrupt than anyone thought possible.

Explosive
The defense and intelligence journal Just Security published a breaking story yesterday (link here) with leaked Pentagon emails they obtained that showed both that Donald Trump was directing and intimately familiar with the matters at the heart of the Ukraine scandal and also that the Defense Department freaked out about the aid being blocked and felt the action was illegal.
Both Talking Points Memo and the Washington Poss published shorter pieces thereafter (link here and here respectively) explaining why the leak is both extraordinary and highly damaging for Trump.
This leak couldn't have come at a worse time for Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress because it shoots more holes in their already bullet-ridden defense of the President. Their only hope now is to hold a quick scam trial in the Senate and acquit with the excuse "it's bad but not an impeachable defense."
Voters, however, will hopefully punish both Trump and Republican Senators at the ballot box this November.

Wake Up
I've written here before that when a Republican criticizes Donald Trump and the GOP's blind loyalty to him, we should pay attention. Yesterday's Washington Post provided a perfect example (link here) in a piece written by a GOP political consultant with the title "Wake up, Republicans. Your party stands for all the wrong things now."
These two paragraphs cut to the bone:
"Republicans are now officially the character doesn’t count party, the personal responsibility just proves you have failed to blame the other guy party, the deficit doesn’t matter party, the Russia is our ally party, and the I’m-right-and-you-are-human-scum party. Yes, it’s [Donald] Trump’s party now, but it stands only for what he has just tweeted."
"A party without a governing theory, a higher purpose or a clear moral direction is nothing more than a cartel, a syndicate that exists only to advance itself. There is no organized, coherent purpose other than the acquisition and maintenance of power."
Truer words were never spoken. The GOP is now a cult run by a cartel. How and where it will end up is anyone's guess.
