A Man Named Lev

Against the backdrop of the President's impeachment, Lev Parnas, a former associate of both Donald Trump and his lawyer Rudy Guliani, has given a series of media interviews with explosive revelations (details here, here, and here).

These have resulted in several big takeaways, including that Trump has always been completely in the loop on everything that was happening with the Ukraine extortion scandal and that there were multiple other incidents of Trump and his people squeezing the Ukrainian government for election help.

Parnas is under indictment and some of his claims have not been confirmed. At the same time, he has been providing explosive document releases that are confirmed and suggest he's telling the truth.

Nevertheless, Senate Republicans are pretending he doesn't exist. They may do so at their peril. Jonathan Bernstein at Bloomberg wrote an excellent piece about this (link here).

"Republican senators don't even know what they're covering up for, or at least what they would be covering up for if they follow the White House's preference to rush through the Senate impeachment trial that starts next week and refuse to hear from relevant witnesses and collect relevant documents," writes Bernstein.

For his part, Trump insists he does not know Parnas. And Parnas, angered at that, keeps releasing photos of himself with Trump.

Richard Nixon made the big mistake of treating some of his bagmen like shit. They turned against him. Trump is making this same mistake. Of course, if he read any history, he would know this, but then Trump thinks he's too smart to learn anything.

As one pundit said on Twitter yesterday, "when Trump says he knows everything, he knows nothing. When Trump says he knows nothing, he knows something. And that something is bad."

The process is not yet set in stone for this impeachment but should be within the next few weeks. The biggest question will be whether the Senate will allow for an actual trial with witnesses or whether they want a sham without witnesses.

Polls show that a clear majority of Americans want witnesses at the impeachment trial, so an attempt to thwart that may hand Trump an acquittal but then help Republicans lose control of the Senate with this November's election.

Incoming

Today, the House of Representatives is expected to formally vote to send Donald Trump's two articles of impeachment to the Senate for a trial.

Although House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was criticized by Republicans for delaying transmission of the articles, she appears to have achieved her goal of both preventing summary dismissal of the charges and also of compelling the Senate to allow witnesses in the proceedings (details here).

A failure to quickly dismiss and also inclusion of witnesses both represent significant defeats for Trump. He wanted a sham trial but it does not appear he will get it. The fairer and more objective the trial, the more likely the public will learn about how Trump has repeatedly violated the law.

The chances of the Senate voting to convict Trump and remove him from office have always been small. But that was never really the goal behind the impeachment, I don't believe.

It was all about making public Trump's corruption and incompetence on the biggest stage possible. That now appears likely to happen. The Senate trial is expected to begin next Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Four Embassies and a Liar

In recent days, Donald Trump has repeatedly said that part of the reason he ordered a drone strike on Iranian general Qasem Soleimani was because the latter planned to attack four embassies — not some or a few or three or six but specifically four.

But as Aaron Blake wrote in the Washington Post yesterday (link here), that claim appears to be nothing more than the standard bundle of Trump lies that his underlings have failed to defend. His piece is titled "Trump's 'four embassies' claim utterly falls apart."

The wisdom of striking Soleimani aside, if Trump had any sense, he could have sold the attack to the American people with a succinct statement immediately thereafter and made sure his administration stayed completely on a tight message thereafter.

But, of course, he didn't do that. He played his typical childish Twitter games and retweeted memes and made a whole host of conflicting claims, long after the fact, in an attempt to justify the strike. Rather than appear on national television the night of the attack with a tight statement, he waited days to make a public appearance that was nothing short of a sniffing, slurring, babbling disaster.

As someone who closely followed the action against Osama bin Laden, particularly the public messaging after the fact, it's sobering to watch how badly Trump has bungled what could have been a victory for him. He snatched disaster from the jaws of victory. The whole episode has ably demonstrated Trump's gross incompetence and unfitness for the presidency.

Tuesday Tearoom

The Oligarch

Last week, the NPR radio program Fresh Air featured an interview with an investigative journalist who has written about Donald Trump and his extended family for a number of years. The episode is available for free and indefinitely online to download as a podcast (link here).

I highly recommend listening. In the span of forty minutes, the writer succinctly deconstructs Trump with a clarity and focus I've not witnessed any other journalist achieve.

I was left with several thoughts after listening to the program.

One is that a man striving to be an oligarch, as Trump has been doing all his life, is the absolutely wrong kind of person to be President. America is now morphing from a democracy into a plutocracy and Trump will only hasten that transition. It's imperative on all of us to reverse this trend in 2020 and thereafter.

Second is the realization that Trump is like a virus who infects most everyone around him with corruption, including his own children. The only ones who survive this are the ones who escape before he can corrupt them. He's also infected a fair portion of the country. The only cure will be to expunge him from the government.

I did not write what follows. It's by the science fiction writer Adam-Troy. It provides an interesting perspective, so I thought I would share.

An anguished question from a Trump supporter came my way: "Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?"

The serious answer: Here’s what we really think about Trump supporters -- the rich, the poor, the malignant and the innocently well-meaning, the ones who think and the ones who don't.

That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought "Fine." That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, "Okay." That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, "No problem." That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, "Not an issue." That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn't care, you chirped, "He sure knows me."

That when you heard him illustrate his own character by telling that cute story about the elderly guest bleeding on the floor at his country club, the story about how he turned his back and how it was all an imposition on him, you said, "That's cool!" That when you saw him mock the disabled, you thought it was the funniest thing you ever saw. That when you heard him brag that he doesn't read books, you said, "Well, who has time?" That when the Central Park Five were compensated as innocent men convicted of a crime they didn't commit, and he angrily said that they should still be in prison, you said, "That makes sense." That when you heard him tell his supporters to beat up protesters and that he would hire attorneys, you thought, "Yes!"

That when you heard him tell one rally to confiscate a man's coat before throwing him out into the freezing cold, you said, "What a great guy!" That you have watched the parade of neo-Nazis and white supremacists with whom he curries favor, while refusing to condemn outright Nazis, and you have said, "Thumbs up!" That you hear him unable to talk to foreign dignitaries without insulting their countries and demanding that they praise his electoral win, you said, "That's the way I want my President to be." That you have watched him remove expertise from all layers of government in favor of people who make money off of eliminating protections in the industries they're supposed to be regulating and you have said, "What a genius!" That you have heard him continue to profit from his businesses, in part by leveraging his position as President, to the point of overcharging the Secret Service for space in the properties he owns, and you have said, "That's smart!"

That you have heard him say that it was difficult to help Puerto Rico because it was the middle of water and you have said, "That makes sense." That you have seen him start fights with every country from Canada to New Zealand while praising Russia and quote, "falling in love" with the dictator of North Korea, and you have said, "That's statesmanship!" That Trump separated children from their families and put them in cages, managed to lose track of 1500 kids. has opened a tent city incarceration camp in the desert in Texas -- he explains that they’re just “animals” -- and you say, “well, ok then.”

That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise. What you don't get, Trump supporters in 2019, is that succumbing to frustration and thinking of you as stupid may be wrong and unhelpful, but it's also -- hear me -- charitable.

Because if you're not stupid, we must turn to other explanations, and most of them are less flattering.

The Horse's Mouth

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published a behind-the-scenes article (link here) from inside the Trump administration about the process of deciding to kill Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

One is struck by how the White House is now populated entirely by Donald Trump's yes men. Per the article, his team is "less inclined than its predecessors to push back against the President's wishes, according to administration officials and others consulted by the White House. They were also less likely to consult in advance with other administration, Pentagon or State Department officials, congressional leaders or foreign allies."

And this is the most significant reveal: "Trump, after the strike, told associates he was under pressure to deal with Gen. Soleimani from GOP senators he views as important supporters in his coming impeachment trial in the Senate."

So it wasn't about protecting the nation or preventing a possible Iranian strike. It was entirely about Trump. How typical.

But this also raises an interesting question: Given the drone strike was meant to appease GOP senators, it's curious that Trump is still worried a GOP-majority Senate could convict him in the forthcoming impeachment trial. Is there something Trump is afraid will be made public by witness testimony or by media reportage before the verdict vote?

Consequences

If I'm being tailgated on the highway and, in order to "teach the guy a lesson," I deliberately jam on my brakes, causing a chain reaction of collisions that kills eleven people, am I responsible for their deaths?

Now consider this example: Donald Trump ordered the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. Thereafter, at least 232 people have been killed because of two incidents that grew out of Trump's order.

First, at least 56 people were killed in a crushing crowd during Soleimani's funeral (details here).

And second, at least 176 people were killed when an Ukrainian commercial jet crashed shortly after takeoff in Tehran (details here and here). The jet likely was shot down by the Iranian military which either confused it as an attack or because it was in the way of a missile fired at an American military base, where no casualties were reported.

Yes, the Iranians are partly to blame for the air crash. The could have done nothing after the Soleimani killing.

But Trump was the one who caused the domino chain to start. If he had not ordered Soleimani's killing, there would have been no funeral and thus no crush. And the Ukranian jet likely would not have crashed.

When asked if he bore any responsibility for these deaths, Trump of course said no and blamed the Iranians. A raging narcissist like him would never accept any kind of responsibility for anything that did not flatter himself.

The firm that runs Public Policy Polling issued a statement yesterday with their latest 2020 presidential preference poll that everyone opposed to Trump should read (link here). It's not long.

Here's the money quote: "the fate of the 2020 election really stands in the hands of the voters who don't like Trump. Trump does not have enough people who like him to get reelected: the only way he does is if the voters who don't like him refuse to get on the same page after the Democratic primary is over. Right now we see a lot of people saying they will vote for Biden but not Bernie or will vote for Bernie but not Biden. If those people get on the same page once the nominee is chosen, Trump will lose. If they don't, it will be close."

And if it's close, Trump could prevail again with a tight Electoral College win, whilst losing the popular election, like he did in 2016.

It is so critically important that you vote in the primary for the candidate you believe has the best chance of beating Trump. This will be no time for pie-in-the-sky dreams about longshot candidates.

And in the general election, it's absolutely mandatory that you vote for whatever candidate who, again, has the best chance of beating Trump. That candidate will almost certainly be the Democratic nominee, given the dominance of America's two major parties.

Don't let good be the enemy of perfect, because if you do that, then horrible will likely win again.
