The Pariah

The Daily Beast published a good piece yesterday (link here) about how Donald Trump has diminished the United States' standing internationally as well as its reputation. The article notes in the very first sentence how this deterioration is being exploited by both Russia and China.

America used to be a global leader. Now, under Trump, it's fleeing that leadership role. That will ultimately hurt America's economy both domestically and internationally.

This is exactly why Vladimir Putin wanted Trump elected President and why Russia put so many resources -- most illegally -- into helping Trump get elected. Trump is hurting America. Russia, as well as China, are reaping the rewards of that damage.

Countries rise and fall in power over time. Great Britain is a perfect example of that. But Britain never deliberately took steps to weaken itself.

America under Trump, however, is the exception. Its head of state is hurting America and damaging its future potential, yet his supporters gladly cheer him on. They despise non-Americans and want an isolated, closed America -- which by its nature will be a weaker America.

Some on the left believe Trump is a knowing covert asset of the Kremlin who is controlled by Putin and deliberately sabotaging America, not unlike Kim Philby in the mid-twentieth century who did so much damage to Britain, his own country. I don't know if I buy that conspiracy theory; nevertheless, Trump is acting like he's a Kremlin asset, even if just unwittingly.

Or it could be that he's putting his own business interest ahead of America's best interest. So at the end of the day, he's just as bad as a Kremlin agent in the White House.

The Thebans

Chances are you didn't learn about the Sacred Band of Thebes when you were in high school history. That's because they were an all-male, all-gay elite company of warriors (details here).

Politico published an article yesterday (link here) about how, in an unprecedented move, Donald Trump's 2020 re-election campaign and the party's overall campaign would be merged into one unit.

This means that a primary challenge to Trump from within the Republican Party is all but doomed to fail. But at the same time, it also puts the Trump millstone around the GOP. A deeply unpopular President mired in an unprecedented number of scandals and criminal investigations is made one with the entire Republican Party.

This could prove disastrous for Republicans at the polls in 2020, not unlike what happened in many parts of the country during the 2018 midterms. The party has tied the Trump millstone around its neck and is eager to jump in the pond. It couldn't happen to a more deserving group of people.

Seventeen

Yesterday, Wired magazine published a great overview article (link here) with a title that says it all: "A Complete Guide to All Seventeen Known Trump and Russia Investigations."

Seventeen is a staggering and unprecedented number of investigations for a sitting President. From the article: "as 2018 winds down, Donald Trump faces a legal assault unlike anything previously seen by any President."

The chance that he can escape all seventeen investigations has to be pretty slim. All this is surely getting to Trump. If you've seen any recent pictures of Trump, you've probably noticed he looks like hell. His Twitter feed reads like the ravings of an institutionalized inmate.

And, of course, seventeen doesn't include Congressional investigations that will begin next year nor any of the many private lawsuits where Trump is being sued.

All of the above aside, I imagine the number of investigations will expand beyond seventeen in the future as more scandals are uncovered, particularly when the House of Representatives committees will begin investigating Trump, his business, and his associates.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump tried to claim that Hillary Clinton would be mired in scandal and investigations thus not able to function effectively as President. Given that standard he set, and given he's mired in scandals and a record number of investigations, shouldn't he step down, because he admittedly can't function as President?

Closing In

On Saturday, the Washington Post published an article (link here) about how every organization Trump has led in the last decade or so is now the subject of a criminal investigation.

Trump's business, his administration, his campaign, his inaugural committee, his foundation, his children, and Trump himself are all subject to both criminal and civil investigations. With so many dubious actions and transactions, one has to imagine that the chances of him being busted -- and more than once -- are pretty high.

All this comes as no surprise. Trump has long had a lack of ethics. From his illegal discrimination against African-Americans who inquired about renting apartments to his hiring of illegal immigrants in his construction projects to his numerous transactions that appear to be money laundering for criminal elements, he has long played fast and loose with legality.

As many observers have noted, most people view the law as something that should be followed. Trump, however, has long viewed the law as something that can be skirted and avoided where possible and outright violated at times. So it's no wonder his practices and history are now under scrutiny.

You'd think someone with such a tendency would not deliberately put himself in the public fishbowl by running for the presidency, but then again Trump is often his own worst enemy.

The Dossier

The Steele Dossier is one of the core elements of the ever-growing Trump/Russia scandal (details here). Donald Trump and his supporters insist it's all a fiction and fabrication.

Since its public release nearly two years ago, however, more and more of the dossier has been proven to be true and nothing substantial has been proven false.

On Friday, Lawfare ran an update (link here) about how recent filings in various criminal cases involving Donald Trump associates have served to further validate aspects of the dossier. "The dossier holds up well over time, and none of it, to our knowledge, has been disproven," the piece notes.

The dossier is raw intelligence, not reportage. Raw intelligence is acknowledged in the intelligence trade to not be 100 percent accurate but more like 85 percent to 90 percent active.

Against that background, the Lawfare piece carefully spells out all the aspects that have been proven true. It's a compelling read.

Once again, it appears the Trump camp's claims about the dossier are unfounded. Foiled by lies again.

Courthouse Mystery

A number of media outlets reported yesterday on a mystery at the federal appeals court in Washington when an entire floor was cleared so reporters wouldn't see who was coming and going to the hearing. I think Politico has the best writeup on this with the most details (link here).

Someone has been fighting a subpoena. Who is it? Some have wondered if it's Donald Trump, although the White House has denied that's the case.

That doesn't seem to be a logical answer. Arguably, Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who's conducting the criminal investigation into Trump and his associates, is the one who wanted yesterday's extreme secrecy to keep the subpoenaed party's identity a secret. He'd have no reason to do that if it was Trump.

I'm wondering if it could be Deutsche Bank, which has loaned Trump hundreds of millions. There would be a valid reason to keep the bank's identity secret at this time.

Hopefully more details will come out soon about this tantalizing story. Stay tuned.

Phase Two

The Daily Beast reported a story yesterday (link here) that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who leads the criminal investigation of Donald Trump and associates, has begun a second phase of his investigation, this time into both the President's and other Republicans' possible illegal activities with various Middle East countries and individuals.

For its part, the Wall Street Journal broke the story yesterday (link here) that federal prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into Trump's inaugural fundraising and spending and whether any quid pro quo was involved in buying access to the President.

For all the journalists assuming that Mueller is nearly finished with his work, the Beast piece suggests that's not the case. That aside, any attempt to shut Mueller down will not stop federal prosecutors in U.S. Attorneys offices from investigating the Trump administration, as the Journal article reveals.

As if this wasn't enough, the incoming state attorney general for New York has announced she plans to open a wide-ranging investigation into Trump, his business, his family, and his associates (details here). This is an important development because while Trump can pardon anyone charged with federal crimes, a President has no power to pardon someone for state charges. As residents of New York, Trump and his family are viable targets.

The bottom line is that if Trump thinks things are bad now -- and his public meltdowns suggest the investigations and charges are getting to him -- they're going to get a whole lot worse in 2019. It couldn't happen to someone more deserving.

The Noose Tightens

The time may soon come where Donald Trump wishes yesterday didn't happen.

First, his personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in federal prison for the crimes he committed for Trump's benefit and upon his direction (details here). If Trump were not the sitting President, he would be indicted for what he did and would currently be facing criminal charges.

When speaking in court yesterday, Cohen said he had "been living in a personal and mental incarceration ever since the day that I accepted the offer to work for" Trump. Thereafter, he said his "blind loyalty" led him "to take a path of darkness instead of light."

Shortly after Cohen's sentencing hearing, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that it had obtained what is known as a non-prosecution agreement with the National Enquirer tabloid's parent company to disclose all details of a hush money operation to prevent disclosure of Trump's adulterous affair with a Playboy playmate (details here). The Enquirer admitted it took this action to influence the 2016 election and to help Trump's chances of becoming President.

As the Washington Post reported later in the day (link here), Trump is now in much greater legal jeopardy as a result of what happened yesterday. Tradition holds that a sitting President may not be indicted, but that protection would end the minute Trump leaves office.

Of course, these issues are separate from the legal jeopardy Trump faces over the possibility of illegal collusion with Russia and related criminal conspiracies, investigations of which continue.

Which means more shoes may drop and soon. Stay tuned.
