The Champion
Donald Trump has repeatedly cast himself as some great crusader fighting corruption and thus the reason he insisted the Ukrainian government investigate Joe Biden's son, a demand at the heart of his impeachment.
Consider the following description from a 2015 Time magazine article about the business practices at Trump's own "university" (source here):
"The instructors in the $1,495 course told students to fill out forms detailing their personal assets. The ostensible purpose was so that the instructors could counsel them on the best investments. The real purpose, according to court filings, was to ascertain whether they might be targets for the Elite $34,995 up-sell or for less expensive Silver or Gold up-sells. The instructors told their students to contact their credit card companies during a lunch break in order to get their credit limits raised–not so that they could buy properties, as the script said they were to be told, but so that they could charge the mentorship programs to those credit cards."
Now remind us again how Trump is only interested in fighting corruption?

Proving the Point
On Thursday night, the influential evangelical magazine Christianity Today published an editorial titled "Trump Should Be Removed from Office" (link here). The piece laid out a careful and thoughtful argument why Donald Trump should be fired on moral grounds.
It's extraordinary reading from a most surprising source.
On Friday, Trump lashed out at the magazine in a series of tweets — that fact alone is hardly a surprise — which helped make the magazine's argument for them (details here).
Trump's wisest course would have been to say nothing. But he's too thin-skinned for that ever to happen.
How much of an effect will this editorial have on the evangelical community? That remains to be seen. If people take the piece to heart, then it should. If they ignore it and then rationalize why they have done so, then it will not have succeeded.
But it could never be said that it failed. Because there is never failure in being right.

The Shaming
George Conway wrote an excellent piece for the Washington Post yesterday (link here) about how Republican Senators who back Trump now will be shamed for all time.
An excerpt: "So common sense should tell senators that, even if Trump is acquitted in a short-circuited trial, that won’t prevent the evidence from revealing whether an acquittal was a just one. If Republican senators cut the trial short, they run the risk of being refuted and shamed on the pages of history by the very evidence they sought to suppress."
It's a superb piece. Read it and share.

Stop the Clock
Donald Trump was impeached last night by the House of Representatives on two counts: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The matter next moves to the Senate for trial.
The original plan was to refer the matter to the Senate for an impeachment trial next month.
There is now an effort to stop the clock, to wait until the Senate agrees to allow witnesses at the Senate trial and other conditions to make the process more objective (details here and here). House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated last night this is something that should be considered.
I hope they end up doing this. Nothing is gained by allowing the Senate to hold a sham trial. If you agree, call your House representative if he or she voted in favor of impeachment and ask him or her to delay forwarding the matter. You can find the telephone number here.

Three Senators
Esquire published a great piece yesterday (link here) about how three retiring Republicans Senators could compel the Senate to hold a fair impeachment trial that wouldn't make a mockery of the Constitution by forcing the inclusion of key witnesses like John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, and Mike Pompeo.
The three Senators in question are Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Pat Roberts of Kansas, and Mike Enzi of Wyoming. If, for the love of this country, you live in one of those three states, it's absolutely imperative you contact your Senator and repeatedly to make sure this happens.
As for those in the rest of the forty-seven states, it wouldn't hurt to contact them, either. They need to put country before party. Don't let them make the trial into a farce.

Mobbed Up
I'm currently reading Crime in Progress: Inside the Steele Dossier and the Fusion GPS Investigation of Donald Trump by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch. The authors note how, late in 2015, the Washington Post broke a story about Trump's many and extensive organized crime connections (link here to that 2015 article).
The bombshell allegations in the article should have been enough to sink Trump's presidency way back when. But his primary opponents said nothing. The issue of Trump's mob connections never took hold.
Flash forward to last month when the Daily Beast published a deeply researched, comprehensive article about Trump's connections to a baker's dozen of organized crime figures (link here). That article, too, largely escaped much scrutiny.
Even without checking, I know there's a good chance one or both of these articles escaped notice because Trump said something particularly idiotic or inflammatory the day they were published. By accident or design, as he has done many times before, he can successfully deflect attention away from something serious onto something trivial.
That's why it's always important to pay attention to issues that Trump is trying to distract us away from. He's hiding something for a reason.

The Most Dangerous Man
Donald Trump's current attorney general William Barr — and the one he'll likely hold on to for the rest of his presidency, however long or short — is his perfect villainous handmaiden. I've always been curious about what exactly makes him tick, because he was not a Trump supporter during the 2016 campaign.
The writer Greg Olear published an excellent piece last Friday (link here) that superbly and thoroughly dissects Barr and why he's so loyal to Trump. The piece is partly titled "The Most Dangerous Man in America."
Trump is surrounded by zealots, true believers, and yes-men, but as Olear makes clear, Barr is in a class by himself. It's like every time he's faced with a choice — the good way or the evil way — he takes the latter.

The Conspirators
On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee formally approved two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. The final full House vote will occur next week.
Senate Republicans are now openly coordinating with the White House how the trial will be run (details here and here). It's sounding like they'll make it a rather rushed and prefunctory matter.
I've seen some Democrats and independents and never-Trump Republicans lamenting this but I don't agree. If the Senate is obviously conducting a sham trial, that will not fool anyone except Trump's base.
If they don't take the matter seriously, then I think that will badly hurt them in the 2020 elections. Public polls show a majority of Americans want Trump impeached and removed from office.
Ignoring that majority is very foolish because they're the ones who will decide the election in 2020. Pissing off the people you need may doom the GOP in 2020. Let's hope so.

The Supremes
The Supreme Court yesterday announced that it would hear Donald Trump's appeal of three different cases where he or his accountants have been ordered to turn over his tax returns (details here and here).
Since word came down, I've seen some lamentations online that this is a bad sign. I disagree.
The high court technically did what's called "granting certiorari," which means they'll take up the case. In the grant order, no justices dissented.
None of them stepped up to say that the lower court decisions should be left to stand. The lack of any dissent from the so-called liberals in a very high profile case suggests they had a general consensus of agreement amongst all nine during their secret conference meeting.
So that could mean that Trump will lose nine-zero, just like Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton did. If that were to happen, and Supreme Court precedent suggests it will, that would be a powerful rebuke of Trump in an election year.

Imperative
If anyone should ever ask you for one single article that would make the best case for impeaching Donald Trump and removing him from office, I heartily recommend a recent piece (link here) by Neal Katyal, a law professor at Georgetown and a former acting Solicitor General for the United States.
His essay is titled "Impeaching Trump Is Imperative to Preserving Our Democracy."
An excerpt:
"If President Trump’s efforts to coerce Ukraine into interfering with American democracy had stayed a secret until the 2020 election — if a whistle-blower hadn’t spoken out — we would have fundamentally, perhaps irrevocably, lost faith in the legitimacy of our republic."
"That is why there is no choice but to impeach and remove Trump: because he was willing to undermine our democracy to help his prospects of re-election; because he has stated, unapologetically, that he would do it again; and most important, because he wielded the powers of his office for personal benefit instead of for the benefit of the people.
