A Grim Read

On Wednesday, New York magazine published an unforgettable article about the coronavirus (link here) that I post here with a warning — it's not an easy read.

The piece gives the reader a first-person perspective on what it's like to become infected with the coronavirus now plaguing the planet. It does not have a happy ending, but it's important to remember that most people will survive this virus — about 99 percent of people infected will.

People still would have sickened and died had Donald Trump not been President. Even the most skilled and able chief executive in the world could not have avoided this tragedy. But the crisis could have been a lot less severe and a lot less deadly in the United States if we had a President who confronted this disaster when it became clear it was getting very bad.

So read the linked article if it's not likely to upset you and remember, again, most people who contract this virus will survive. I hope everyone reading this who might contract the virus recovers quickly and with a clean bill of health.

A Warning Ignored

Last night, the Washington Post published an article (link here) about how intelligence officials repeatedly warned Donald Trump in January and February that the coronavirus was spreading to other countries. That meant it could land in the United States and spread rapidly.

These warnings fell on deaf ears.

As a result, the piece notes, "Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen."

The report even detailed how the problem had gotten bad in parts of China because of a slow-footed government response. That was meant to be a warning, but it would end up being the approach Trump took himself, as well.

"Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were — they just couldn’t get him to do anything about it," the article quotes one intelligence official.

It's not surprising that, as the piece notes, "a majority of the intelligence reporting included in daily briefing papers and digests from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the CIA was about Covid-19."

Of course, Trump famously hates to read and tries to read as little as possible. It's no wonder, then, "inside the White House, Trump’s advisers struggled to get him to take the virus seriously."

For example, the Health and Human Services secretary tried to alert the President but his call wasn't accepted for days. When he could finally speak to Trump about the issue, the President abruptly shifted the topic to vaping.

When the topic finally was discussed with Trump's attention, per the piece, he "was dismissive because he did not believe that the virus had spread widely throughout the United States."

And when senior level officials brought up the issue to the media, Trump complained such talk was scaring the stock markets.

It was only until this past week, when things started to turn really bad, did Trump realize this was a serious crisis.

We cannot have a President who is this clueless. He must be defeated in this year's election.

Inside Information

Yesterday, ProPublica broke the story (link here) that Republican Senator Richard Burr from North Carolina, a reliable supporter of Donald Trump, sold as much as $1.7 million in stock after a private, confidential briefing about the coronavirus only open to Senators where they received an early warning about dire consequences within the United States.

Later yesterday, The Daily Beast broke the story (link here) that another Republican Senator, Kelly Loeffler, another reliable Trump supporter, did the same thing.

Shortly after these senators dumped their stock, the market lost a third of its value in record time.

Did one or both of these people engage in insider trading, a felony that involves trading because of privileged information? It is a crime for people in Congress to trade on non-public information learned through official duties.

If they did break the law, hopefully they'll be prosecuted. And hopefully those prosecutions will not be blocked at the Justice Department for political reasons to protect two of Trump's friends.

The great irony to all this is that these two senators recently voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial. If it turns out one or both of them committed crime, that will speak volumes about the elected officials who absolved the President.

This scene is curiously silent, suggesting the noise you hear is real, which I think is sexier than fake moaning. I guess these two are supposed to have hooked up at carnival. Talk about opposites attract.

Change of Heart

You may have noticed Donald Trump's public stance on the coronavirus crisis changed markedly last week. Before last Monday, Trump endless scoffed and downplayed the threat.

For instance, in late January, he said, "we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine." A month later, he was saying "the coronavirus is very much under control in the USA.... Stock Market starting to look very good to me."

Now he's holding press conferences every day. He's actually doing something to address the crisis.

So what changed?

It wasn't all the experts in senior levels of government warning him, whom he ignored. It wasn't all the of public health experts from around the world, who he ignored.

It was only when Trump was watching television — something he does for hours every day — that Tucker Carlson on Fox finally scared the shit out of him and he was moved to act (details here).

It's a sad commentary on the state of America where the only thing that seems to reach the President is a daytime TV show.

Of course, this does not absolve Trump of what he did before Carlson finally got the President's head out of his ass. He needs to answer for why he turned down millions of diagnostic tests that were offered to the United States (details here).

He still needs to be defeated in November's election. But at least he's given us greater clarity on why he allowed this disaster to fester while doing almost nothing. And because of that clarity, it's even more obvious now why he must not be reelected.

In real life, both men in a couple can sometimes look amazingly alike, like clones of each other. At other times, they're quite different, as is the case for the couple seen here. Both are hot but in a different way than the other.

The Warning

On Monday, Politico broke a highly disturbing story (link here) about how, one week before Donald Trump's 2017 inauguration, senior officials in his incoming administration were warned in great detail by departing officials from President Obama's West Wing about the dangers and realities of a serious global pandemic, much like the one we are currently facing.

"The Trump team was told it could face specific challenges, such as shortages of ventilators, anti-viral drugs and other medical essentials, and that having a coordinated, unified national response was 'paramount' — warnings that seem eerily prescient given the ongoing coronavirus crisis," the article notes.

The detailed warning didn't sink in for many. One incoming cabinet secretary fell asleep. Some kept leaving and returning the meeting. "Some Obama aides who attended said they were left with the impression that many of the Trump aides showed up to simply check off a box more than to learn," per the piece.

Some Trump people in the room, who actually had no relevant experience, clearly felt they knew more than the highly experienced Obama people they were replacing. "The problem is that they came in very arrogant and convinced that they knew more than the outgoing administration — full swagger," per one attendee.

"There were [Trump] people who were there who said, 'This is really stupid and why do we need to be here,'" said another former official. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who fell asleep several times, and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos "were especially dismissive in conversations on the sidelines of the session."

As to whether the current chief executive himself, who did not attend the session, was aware of the pandemic threat at that time, one former senior Trump administration official said it wasn’t "the kind of thing that really interested the President very much. He was never interested in things that might happen. He’s totally focused on the stock market, the economy, and always bashing his predecessor and giving him no credit. Even though we would put time on the schedule for things like that, if they happened at all, they would be very, very brief. To get the President ... focused on something like this would be quite hard."

And, now, three years later, we see the result of this arrogance and unpreparedness. Trump still brags to this day about how he never did homework as a student nor read the required texts, as if that was something admirable.

The result is that such arrogance makes you ignorant, the last thing we need in a President as we face this unprecedented crisis.

A Fusillade of Falsehoods

David Leonhardt at the New York Times published a superb piece on Sunday (link here) about the many times Donald Trump tried to play down the severity of the coronavirus pandemic. The piece is titled "A Complete List of Trump’s Attempts to Play Down Coronavirus" and the deck title "He could have taken action. He didn’t."

An excerpt: "I’ve reviewed all of his public statements and actions on coronavirus over the last two months, and they show a president who put almost no priority on public health. Trump’s priorities were different: Making the virus sound like a minor nuisance. Exaggerating his administration’s response. Blaming foreigners and, anachronistically, the Obama administration. Claiming incorrectly that the situation was improving. Trying to cheer up stock market investors."

In February, Trump started making preposterous promises and claims, like "looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away." This about a disease that had only begun to appear three months earlier in November. The April business is something he fabricated on the spot.

Then he started attempting to shift the blame as the crisis worsened. It wasn't his fault; it was the fault of the Democrats for, as he falsely claimed, wanting open borders. But he controlled the borders, not Democrats. And the first carriers to come in the United States entered legally and were processed by the federal government, which Trump heads.

By late February, Trump was outright lying about statistics. While new cases were skyrocketing, he said things like "we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up." This is another bold-faced lie.

To this day, Trump continues to distort what's happening. He keeps praising himself and his administration, giving the false impression that everything's under control. It frankly isn't. Every day is uncharted territory, into which Trump boldly bloviates without a clue.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone. Pay attention to what the experts are saying, not the idiots.

The Ship

Yesterday, nearly four thousand passengers disembarked from a cruise ship in Miami.

No one was tested for coronavirus, no one questioned about any possible symptoms, no temperatures were taken, notwithstanding that a fellow passenger on the cruise ship had earlier tested positive for Covid-19 (details here). Many passengers then traveled to the airport where they boarded flights.

This incident provides a perfect snapshot of Donald Trump and his administration's supreme incompetence. At least eight cruise ships in the last two months have had either coronavirus outbreaks or suspected cases that later proved positive.

Yet the Trump administration has utterly no plan for how to deal with cruise ships, even though the President has direct chain of command control over the Coast Guard, which in turn can order any ship to be held in a port and the passengers kept aboard.

The coronavirus pandemic, as of this writing, has had more than 170,000 confirmed cases worldwide with more than six thousand deaths. All of those cases can be traced back to one man who traveled out of Wuhan, China, in mid-November of last year.

Who knows how many people may eventually be infected by allowing the ship to disembark yesterday and for the untested passengers to scatter to the wind, many on confined flights where transmission of the virus would be easy. But one thing is known — every single person who becomes ill because of this debacle will have been sickened and possibly killed by Trump's ineptitude.

Riding Reese

Designed to Fail

Former deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes wrote a very smart piece for The Atlantic last Friday (link here) with the provocative title of "How Trump Designed His White House to Fail."

Under President Obama, Rhodes notes, the White House had a special office that dealt specifically with epidemic and pandemic threats. That helped the President focus on threats just coming over the horizon and task the necessary staff members with monitoring and researching the potential disaster.

Trump disbanded that office, thus pushing pandemics and epidemics out of sight. His focus was elsewhere — petty Twitter snipes, crowing about himself, and voluminous television watching.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out then how the looming coronavirus threat would completely broadside Trump's presidency and hobble any response. Throwing together a plan at the last minute with the threat already in the country is not the route to management success.

Rhodes then steps through other factors, unique to Trump, that explain his disastrous response to the escalating crisis. It's an excellent piece and not very long, and I highly recommend.

Unbelievably Vile

The Week published a good but very disturbing piece yesterday (link here) that gathers together highlights of some of the most shocking Trump administration reveals from the last several days.

Prominent among these is about how Donald Trump "did not push to do aggressive additional testing in recent weeks, and that's partly because more testing might have led to more cases being discovered of coronavirus outbreak, and the President had made clear — the lower the numbers on coronavirus, the better for the President, the better for his potential re-election this fall."

It's appalling but typical behavior from Trump. Too fucking bad if there's real harm to the public, because as long as its good for Trump, that's all that matters to him.

The piece also touches on what remains the greatest mystery involving the administration and coronavirus — why did Trump reject use of the German-developed World Health Organization test kit for coronavirus (details here)? Testing is still almost nonexistent because the American-developed test kit is still plagued by problems and delays.

Was it incompetence or something darker? Hopefully the House of Representatives will dig into the reasons why and soon.

Drowning Man

The last two days have been surreal. As the coronavirus crisis deepened and the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic, Donald Trump gave an address on Wednesday night intended to calm the nation and the world but it had exactly the opposite effect (details here).

The speech was full of errors and instead of responding to people's most urgent need — viral testing, which is close to nonexistent now — Trump imposed a travel ban on Europe out of the blue, a largely unnecessary step that escalated the crisis to a new level, pissed off America's allies, and was glaringly slapdash.

Travel to countries such as Poland and Finland, where the virus is close to nonexistent now, is banned yet it's allowed still to the United Kingdom, which has a far higher rate of infection. Everyone immediately suspected the reason for this exemption — Trump owns resort properties in Britain.

Stock market futures immediately began tanking even before Trump finished speaking Wednesday night and plummeted once trading opened yesterday, dropping by the largest numerical amount in history. In the last month alone, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the traditional market measure, has lost more than eight thousand points, nearly 30 percent of its value from only a month ago.

Indeed, the market has fallen so far and so fast that it's now nearly at the level it was when Trump took office in 2017. His constant bragging point about the strong stock market under his presidency has now evaporated. The Dow has now lost more than 85 percent of the gain since the day Trump was sworn into office.

There was a lot of media coverage about Trump's trainwreck of a speech on Wednesday night. I think the best piece I read on the subject was by veteran Washington correspondent Susan Glasser at the New Yorker (link here). It's not long and highly recommended.

Many people who began opposing Trump as soon as he ran for office said he would be incapable of handling a national crisis if it were to strike while he was President, if elected. This week the reality of that warning could not be any clearer.
