In 2010 on Fox News, he said allowing openly LGBT people in the military was just like letting pedophiles serve in the armed forces.

Given that Donald Trump has repeatedly lavished praise on the NRA and given speeches to the organization's membership on multiple occasions, don't be surprised if you see him cuddling up to the LGBT-hating North in the near future. Trump has a long history of pandering to LGBT haters while continuing to peddle the lie that he's actually pro-LGBT.

Yesterday, The Washington Post broke the story (link here) that Donald Trump has met with the Postmaster General numerous times to demand that postal rates be doubled for Amazon and other similar companies.

This is the kind of things dictators do in totalitarian countries. In Russia, for instance, if you for some reason become a thorn in Vladimir Putin's side, he'll order government officials to make your life hell for you. And no one will come to your defense -- no journalist, no lawyer, no prosecutor, no court.

If you try a tactic like that in the United States, however, journalists and lawyers would be happy to help the presidential victim and a court may grant a judicial order to block the President. This could also trigger a federal prosecutor to begin an investigation of the specific presidential action.

If Trump actually read articles and books, he'd probably already would know this. But the President is famously anti-literate; if he doesn't see it on daytime television, he doesn't know about it.

That's why he thinks he's sounding tough but he's ultimately toothless. He's trying to bully people but they know he has no real power to do so. He's a corrupt but embarrasing and toothless President.

He keeps ranting about how he's making America great again. In reality, he's making America groan again.

Compare and Contrast

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel (what used to be called a special prosecutor) to lead the criminal investigation into Donald Trump and his associates.

To commemorate the event, the political website FiveThirtyEight published a comprehensive and deeply sourced article (link here) comparing the success of Mueller's investigation with other recent criminal investigations targeting White House senior officials.

The bottom line: Mueller has been more successful than any other such criminal investigation, with the exception of Watergate, based on the number of individuals charged with criminal offenses.

The article also makes clear that predicting how long Mueller's investigation will run as well as the outcome, something the White House has done repeatedly, is nothing short of foolish.

It could be another Watergate, which ended a presidency. It could be another Iran-Contra, which did not directly entangle a President but tarnished his legacy forever and exposed his increasingly frail state. Or it could be another Whitewater, which kept building in steam until it triggered a President's impeachment.

Mueller's team has kept a tight lid on what exactly is happening and it's rare that any details emerge and that almost exclusively comes from people the prosecutors have already met and, in some instances, subpoenaes. Just yesterday, for instance, it was revealed that Mueller had indicted someone back in January and then "flipped" him to testify against Trump's former, now-indicted campaign chairman.

That's why we all need to stay tuned and pay attention.

If only one of these incidents were true, that should be a scandal in itself that would bring down a normal politician. But given the tidal wave of Trump scandals, it just seems overwhelming at times.

Trump supporters blindly support him, no matter what. Republicans in Congress turn the other way and pretend not to see what's right in front of them. Democrats and Independents grow more and more angry, and more and more saturated by all the scandals.

The time is soon coming where we can all say "enough is enough." That day will be Tuesday, November 6, the date of the midterm elections. Donate if you can and volunteer as well, particularly if you're unable to send contributions.

Yet Another New Scandal

Several times during 2017 and 2018, the American government took legal and administrative action against the Chinese electronics giant ZTE, which is connected to and partially owned by the Chinese government.

In March of last year, for instance, the company was hit with a $1.2 billion fine for violating US law by selling technology with US components in North Korea and Iran after trying to deceive the government. Further, because ZTE continued to violate US law, the government blocked all American companies from doing business with ZTE.

ZTE then announced that it would have to shut down its phone manufacturing business because it could no longer buy American products.

Two days later, a company owned by the Chinese government announced it was loaning $500 million to a real estate development in Indonesia, which includes Trump-branded hotels, residential developments, and a golf course.

And two days later, Donald Trump announced that he was working to get ZTE back into the business of making phones "fast," to use his own words. "Too many jobs in China lost," he said on Twitter. "Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!"

Republican Senator Marco Rubio responded on Twitter shortly thereafter: "Problem with ZTE isn’t jobs & trade, it’s national security & espionage. Any telecomm firm in #China can be forced to act as tool of Chinese espionage without any court order or any other review process. We are crazy to allow them to operate in U.S. without tighter restrictions."

Many are now asking, including Republicans in Congress: was Trump's giant flip-flop on ZTE because of the $500 million loan? "Is China Straight-Up Bribing Donald Trump?" one headline reads (link here). Another asks "Did Trump blink on China to help ZTE, or his own business?" (link here).

Hopefully the media will stay on top of this developing issue and that there are enough concerned Republicans in Congress who are not willing to sweep this under the rug. Stay tuned.

Heartless

Three separate news items in the last few days demonstrate the Trump administration's policy of heartlessness and cruelty. Like every authoritarian and wannabe authoritarian, Donald Trump and his inner circle regularly demonstrate a complete lack of caring for others.

For instance, Trump's choice of director for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Redfield, has a long association with discriminatory AIDS policies (details here). In the 1980s and 1990s, he designed policies that included quarantines. Soldiers were summarily discharged from the military and left to die of AIDS, indigent, jobless, and untreated.

The director later worked for the deceptively titled Americans for a Sound AIDS/HIV Policy (ASAP), which claimed AIDS was "God's judgment" against homosexuals and spread in an America weakened by single-parent households and a loss of family values. No surprise, that organization is heavily funded by conservative evangelicals.

It's patently obvious why Trump picked the stridently partisan Redfield -- to pander to conservative evangelicals, the only segment of the population where his support has not declined markedly. So fuck sick people and their needs; it's all about pandering in the cruel administration of a wannabe authoritarian.

Moving across the world, yesterday in Jerusalem, the United States opened its relocated embassy, a hugely controversial and expensive move that was done entirely to pander to conservative evangelicals. The move triggered rioting yesterday in Israel that left dozens dead. But fuck them, because they can't vote for Trump.

To add insult to injury, the Trump administration invited a highly controversial and rabidly anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and anti-LGBT preacher to appear at the official ceremony. This headline in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz (link here) says it all: "Trump Choosing a 'Jews Are Going to Hell' Evangelical to Pray at the Jerusalem Embassy Is Offensive. But It's No Accident" and with the subhead "Pastor Robert Jeffress also thinks Islam is evil, Mormons belong to a cult, Catholicism is a product of Satan's genius and 'gay is not OK.' But what's a bit of bigotry and theological anti-Semitism between pro-Israel friends?"

Trump and his people picked Jeffress because the latter endorsed him and evangelicals adore him and his policies of hate. Now this choice of featured guest deeply offended many Israelis, but fuck them because they can't vote for Trump.

And finally, in the annals of heartlessness, we once again see how the Trump administration doesn't give a shit about immigrants in a piece published by Vox (link here) with the headline "Cruelty is the defining characteristic of Donald Trump’s politics and policy" and the subhead "John Kelly says separating kids from their parents is fine because of 'foster care or whatever.'"

The article focuses on how Trump's chief of staff sees no problem in separating small children who are American citizens from their undocumented immigrant parents. But since they're brown and can't vote for Trump, fuck them, too.

If you're a Trump voter, you're golden with this administration. But if you're not, you don't count. Never has an American presidency been so contemptuous of millions of Americans simply because they have a different political opinion and are not likely to vote for you again.

But in totalitarian countries like Russia let by Vladimir Putin, whom Trump has never criticized, ordinary citizens are entirely dispensible, too. Just like this.

The Known Unknowns

On Saturday, Axios published a great short piece (link here) that both lists the damning, irrefutable facts about the Trump campaign and administration's collusion with Russia and also underscores the fact that, almost certainly, more big shockers are still coming from Robert Mueller, the special counsel running the criminal investigation into the President and his associates.

This article is a great item to give anyone who still insists "there's no proof" that Trump and his campaign were in league with the Kremlin during the 2016 campaign.

Nonetheless, at least publicly, a great number of Republican politicians continue to support him. In fact, during this year's primaries, many Republican candidates are running on their loyalty to Trump, trying to pander to hard-right voters.

What will happen to all these people if and when truly damning revelations about Trump's criminality emerge? Some are obviously worried, as the article notes: "The known unknowns of how much more Robert Mueller knows that is publicly unknown is what spooks Trump allies most." Talk about putting all your proverbial eggs in one basket.

As noted, more surprises are almost certainly coming, possibly the biggest surprises of all. We have to expect this will happen, given the majority of indictments from Mueller's team revealed previously unknown big shockers.

I only slightly remember Watergate because it happened when I was in primary school and we had not yet emigrated to the United States. But I have read a great deal about it as an adult.

The big surprises came at the end of the Watergate drama. Republicans and the President thought they were safe as long as most of the scandal was invisible to the public.

But once it all came out, the end was swift and brutal. There's every reason to think the same will happen with Trump.

This, again, is why the 2018 midterms are so critical. If Democrats take one or both houses of Congress, they can begin public hearings about the Trump administration, much like happened with Nixon, where some of the most shocking revelations were made.

The premise is straightforward. The writer lists numerous examples of Donald Trump's lies and broken promises. That leaves a rhetorical inquiry -- when will Trump's voters finally wake up to the fact they were conned?

Near the end, he concludes with this powerful wake-up all: "Trump’s behavior is hurting America––and that he won’t change until his supporters demand a higher standard. If the GOP base persists in blinding itself to the unethical people who trade on their relationships with the current president, America will continue to be sold out by the very faction that swore it would make it great again."

Trapped in 1969

This week, the Trump White House released some photos of an official event hosted by Donald Trump's wife and daughter to promote job opportunities for, to use their phrase, "military spouses." If you look at some of the photographs (examples here and here), hopefully some observations will come to mind rather quickly.

This event is about promoting opportunities for military spouses, but every single participant is a woman. With one lone exception, every participant is white.

People of color make up about 45 percent of the American military today. Where were their spouses? Where were the husbands of those serving in the military, husbands of women and husbands of men?

Official events for military spouses are considered "command performance" when they're at the White House. Short of illness or a death in the family, all military spouses will show up. This event was white women only because they were the only ones invited by the Trump White House.

Trump himself seems forever trapped in 1969. His attitudes toward women, LGBTs, and people of color are like something from 1969. His ideas about industry, technology, science, and the arts are trapped in 1969. Even his behavior as President is trapped in 1969, as he tries repeatedly to out-Nixon Nixon.

There are so many ways the Trump Administration is reprehensible, and this overt racism and sexism is yet another example.

Conservative columnist George Will is not my favorite person. However, his guest column in the Washington Post this week (link here) was bloody fantastic.

Yesterday, the media was all over Monday's revelations about Donald Trump's fixer Michael Cohen receiving secret payments from a Kremlin-connected Russian oligarch. That shocker has led to further revelations, including:

The drug company Novartis paid Cohen $1.2 million to "help" Trump shape healthcare policy (details here).

Telecommunications giant AT&T paid as much as $600,000 to Cohen for "insights" from the Trump administration at a time when two major corporate issues were pending government consent (details here).

Korea Aerospace paid $150,000 to Cohen at the same time a $16.3 billion defense contract was pending at the Pentagon (details here).

Details about these three companies' payments to Cohen were first revealed by Michael Avenatti, the lawyer representing pornstar Stormy Daniels, Trump's alleged mistress. They have been independently confirmed by the media and the three companies themselves.

Avenatti has released a dossier about various susicious transactions involving Cohen and Trump as well as detailing possible crimes one or both of them have possibly committed (link here). Avenatti has promised he has more Cohen/Trump bombshells that have yet to be made public.
