Your Time Is Almost Up

The critically important midterm election is now less than a month away. It will happen on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

However, if you want to vote, you need to act now to register or change your address if you haven't done so already. That's because most states close registration and address changes four weeks before election day.

That means you must act by tomorrow to either register or change an address. The government administrated website Vote.gov (link here) allows registration online for most states.

It goes without saying that you must vote this November but you also need to make sure you're registered and that your address is current. This is our one chance as citizens to curb Donald Trump by flipping control of the House of Representatives and, hopefully, the Senate, too. It can't happen unless we all participate.

Do it now. Right now. Don't do anything else before you register and update your address if you haven't already.

The Fifth Risk

I'm nearly done reading Michael Lewis's The Fifth Risk, the newest book about the Trump administration and published this week. It's a short book and an easy read.

It's also terrifying. Of the various Trump tell-alls I've read since he became the GOP nominee, this one is the most horrifying. The book chronicles the extreme incompetence, unpreparedness, unfitness, and sheer insanity of the administration that Trump assembled like a Frankenstein monster.

The Fifth Risk makes clear that Trump and his people aren't emotionally or professionally fit to run a garage sale, let alone a White House and presidential administration. My jaw kept dropping as I read through the text.

As always, I don't recommend buying the book. Borrow it from a library or a friend or download a copy at a file-sharing site. It is well worth your time to read.

It's All Over

As of this writing, all 51 Republican senators have announced their voting plans for Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, and only one will vote "no." Given the Vice President can break all vote ties, this means Kavanaugh will be confirmed with the lowest vote count since the fiftieth state was admitted to the union.

The final vote will come sometime late today or tomorrow. He could be sworn in and seated in the Supreme Court as early as this coming week.

This is a dark day for American democracy. Kavanaugh is morally and temperamentally unfit to serve as any judge, let alone on the highest court in the nation.

The always brilliant Benjamin Wittes wrote earlier this week here in The Atlantic about how seating Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court will undermine the public's faith in both that institution and the justice system as a whole. He said:

"Can anyone seriously entertain the notion that a reasonable pro-choice woman would feel like her position could get a fair shake before a Justice Kavanaugh? Can anyone seriously entertain the notion that a reasonable Democrat, or a reasonable liberal of any kind, would, after that performance, consider him a fair arbiter in, say, a case about partisan gerrymandering, voter identification, or anything else with a strong partisan valence?"

Wittes is referring to Kavanaugh's screaming tantrum about "Democrats and liberals" who he dismissed with sneering, spitting contempt. That tirade alone should have disqualified from any public service.

The battle is not over, however. It's increasingly likely Republicans will lose their majority hold on the House of Representatives in this year's midterm election, which is only a month away.

If that happens, impeachment of Kavanaugh for perjury is a distinct possibility, as an article (link here) in yesterday's Washington Post discussed. Unrelated to the sexual misconduct charges and temperament, Kavanaugh almost certainly perjured himself repeatedly in multiple hearings.

Time will tell if that indeed comes to pass. But Republicans certainly can't complain or they'll look like hypocrites, because they're the ones who impeached Bill Clinton for perjury.

Celebrating Cruelty

The Atlantic published an excellent article on Wednesday (link here) with the title "The Cruelty Is the Point" and the deck title of "Trump and his supporters find community by rejoicing in the suffering of those they hate and fear."

Republicans in the past could be accused of a callous disregard for the less fortunate and the suffering. They made a show of looking concerned but their actions were tepid at best.

Donald Trump, however, seems to revel in treating people badly and, at times, downright cruelly. Immigrants, migrants, minorities, children, and women are subjects of his sneering contempt.

Worse, his administration seems to go out of its way to shit all over the unfortunate. Look at the way he and they treat refugees, immigrants, and migrants. It's a policy of "fuck you, we got ours, so get lost."

This is what you get when you elect a head of state who spent his entire life being as greedy as possible. He has no sympathy nor compassion for anyone who isn't greedy like him.

If you're a poor, browner-skinned person struggling to escape a totalitarian regime, an America under Trump no longer offers you kindness and hope. Piss off and go elsewhere is their motto.

Read the linked piece. It has dozens of examples of this man's cruelty. The way he treats people is like something you'd see in a dictator, not the leader of a democracy.

He demeans America with his heartlessness.

Beefy Kane

Disgusting

On Tuesday night, Donald Trump sunk to one of his lowest levels yet, demeaning himself and the presidency in the process. At one of his ego-fluffing rallies, he mocked the woman who has accused his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexual misconduct (details here).

On the heels of that outrage, word came yesterday that the supposed week-long FBI review of the accusations against Kavanaugh lasted only three days. The final vote process begins Friday. More than forty witnesses were not contacted. Neither Kavanaugh nor his accuser who testified were questioned by the FBI.

All but three Republican senators have announced they plan to vote to confirm Kavanaugh without even bothering to look at the cursory FBI review.

Setting the sexual misconduct matters aside for a moment, Kavanaugh's behavior during his last day of public appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He clearly has an anti-Democrat, anti-progressive bias. A biased person like that should not be the judge of any court, let alone a sitting Justice on the Supreme Court.

The five senators to call and urge to vote "no" on Kavanaugh are:

When you call, say you're from their state and tell them you won't vote for them again if they vote to confirm Kavanaugh. Yes, it may be a white lie to pretend you're from their state if you're not, but the Trump supporters are already doing this, urging "yes" votes.

Tax Fraud G&M

Yesterday afternoon, the New York Times published a major, deeply researched article (link here) with the title "Trump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father." The piece has a companion executive-summary style article (link here) with the title "11 Takeaways From The Times’s Investigation Into Trump’s Wealth."

An excerpt:

Donald "Trump participated in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents."

"Trump won the presidency proclaiming himself a self-made billionaire.... But The Times’s investigation, based on a vast trove of confidential tax returns and financial records, reveals that Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father’s real estate empire, starting when he was a toddler and continuing to this day."

"Much of this money came to Trump because he helped his parents dodge taxes. He and his siblings set up a sham corporation to disguise millions of dollars in gifts from their parents.... Records indicate that Trump helped his father take improper tax deductions worth millions more. He also helped formulate a strategy to undervalue his parents’ real estate holdings by hundreds of millions of dollars on tax returns, sharply reducing the tax bill when those properties were transferred to him and his siblings."

Hopefully Robert Mueller's criminal investigation has already been combing through Trump's tax returns. He could be prosecuted either in civil or criminal court -- or both -- for tax fraud if certain requirements are met (details here).

At a minimum, any political opponent of Donald Trump of both parties, whether in 2018 or 2020, should beat him over the head with this. No one wants to pay more taxes then necessary, but when they use fraudulent means to pay their fair share, then they need to be held accountable, both at the ballot box and in a court of law.

The Nominee's Nose Is Growing

While the FBI investigates allegations of sexual misconduct by Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, a second front has opened against him because of the number of lies he told during Senate hearings. Such lies would be considered perjury, a criminal offense because he was under oath at the time.

Habitual perjury by a Supreme Court justice is no small matter. Let's not forget Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury, but ultimately not removed from office.

To document Kavanaugh's many lies, a wide variety of fact-checking websites and journalists have dissected his statements in print. Hands down, the absolute best compilation is an impressive, extensive article in Current Affairs magazine (link here). I urge you to read the entire piece.

Presuming all Democratic Senators vote "no," at least two Republican Senators must do the same. Jeff Flake from Arizona seems like he's leaning in the "no" direction, given the number of press comments he's made in recent days about how lying would disqualify a high court nominee.

The other two most likely Senators are Susan Collin of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Time will tell if all this lying is turning them against the nominee, too. Stay tuned.

The Plot Thickens

I originally wrote a different political entry for today, but then that was shelved when the news broke late yesterday that CNN was reporting (link here) a startling development in Donald Trump's latest scandal, the alleged sexual misconduct of his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The story reported that the FBI has already interviewed Deborah Ramirez, the second Kavanaugh accuser. And what she revealed was amazing:

She turned over the names, addresses, and contact phone numbers for several witnesses to Kavanaugh's alleged sexual mistreatment of her. Presumably, those witnesses will support her story.

Will a dirty past kill Kavanaugh's chances to be elevated to the highest court in the land? It certainly should. We'll see if that actually happens, though. Stay tuned. It could be a hell of a week.
