All-Consuming

Politico published an interesting but disturbing piece on Friday (link here) about how, since the House of Representatives opened its impeachment inquiry, Donald Trump has become consumed by two things: his re-election campaign and the encroaching impeachment.

"The details of issues that once consumed his attention — such as immigration and trade — have been outsourced to senior officials, and Trump has opted to let others do the talking during meetings with foreign leaders that he would normally command himself," the article notes.

Some might say this is a positive development, because it will keep Trump from screwing things up. But if Trump is not steering the ship, then who is?

Because that's exactly how the Iran-Contra scandal happened — an increasingly confused Ronald Reagan largely abdicated himself from day-to-day administration of his presidency and, in his place, his appointed underlings ran the show and engaged in illegal, shadowy operations that endangered the country's national security.
