A Fiesta

The Republican convention is now over. To call it a national embarrassment from start to finish would be an understatement.

It was, much of the time, a non-stop orgy of ethics violations and lawbreaking. Using federal properties like the White House and the Washington Monument for partisan purposes was a blatant violation of both the law and ethics regulations.

The Hatch Act, a federal law, was outright ignored and repeatedly. Presidential appointees are prohibited by law from engaging in campaigning, yet that didn't stop the Trump administration from doing exactly that.

Previous administrations, both Republican and Democratic, have prohibited cabinet secretaries and West Wing officials from even attending their conventions. The Trump administration not only ignored that precedent, as required by law, but had cabinet secretaries and West Wing officials appearing as prime-time speakers.

It also was an orgy of disinformation and lies (details here and here). You would never know, listening to Donald Trump and other speakers, that the country was enduring the worst pandemic in more than a century nor that it's experiencing record unemployment nor that the economy has collapsed.

Arguably most Americans are aware the GOP convention was a fiesta of illegality and dishonesty. Millions fewer watched television coverage of the Republican convention compared to the Democratic convention.

Hopefully that disparity will continue through to election day. Have you checked that your voter registration is current and in good standing? Do so today by clicking here.
