Fear

On Wednesday night, the New York Times published a superb and revealing op-ed (link here) written by Senator Sherrod Brown from Ohio. The title reads "In Private, Republicans Admit They Acquitted Trump Out of Fear."

He lays out his case simply and powerfully. Republican Senators — with one brave exception — were terrified of Trump. They feared he'd mock them on Twitter, give them a nasty nickname, and turn his supporters against them.

"I have asked some of them," Brown writes, "'if the Senate votes to acquit, what will you do to keep this President from getting worse?' Their responses have been shrugs and sheepish looks."

And this is the most damning part: "In private, many of my colleagues agree that the President is reckless and unfit. They admit his lies. And they acknowledge what he did was wrong. They know this President has done things Richard Nixon never did. And they know that more damning evidence is likely to come out. So watching the mental contortions they perform to justify their votes is painful to behold."

They also likely know their reckoning is coming, at least some of them. They have strongly motivated majorities in their states to contribute to, volunteer with, and vote for their opponents in the 2020 and 2022 Senate races.

Some of them know they will be defeated. Yet they're prolonging the inevitable, clinging to their offices for a few more months. They sold out their country and their constitution in the process.
