An unfolding Trump scandal that's not pulling much public attention right now is his firing last Friday of the State Department inspector general. This is only one of the growing list of inspectors general fired by Trump since his impeachment trial ended.
Every federal department and agency has an inspector general and staff. This function ensures that programs are being administered in accordance with federal law. Personnel may also be reviewed both to ensure compliance and also to investigate potential illegality.
And here is why Trump's latest firing stinks like rotten fish left out on a sunny dock. The State Department's inspector general was investigating both (1) if the Secretary of State has been using government employees for personal projects and (2) if the Trump administration was illegally selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (details here and here).
How convenient that person has now been swept out of the way. Trump can name a replacement who, almost certainly, will shelve both investigations.
Trump promised in 2016 to "drain the swamp" if elected. That, of course, has turned out to be a gigantic lie. He's been busy building swamps ever since he was sworn into office.
Fortunately, the House of Representatives will now look into this firing. And even some Senate Republicans are expressing public concern. Don't look for that latter group to do any real investigating, however.
We can get to the root of this problem by voting Trump out on November third.
