Down the Drain

Last night, the Supreme Court once again soundly rejected any attempt to overturn the 2020 election, denying a petition by the Attorney General of Texas to discard the vote from four states that President-elect Joe Biden won (details here, here, and here).

Seven of the nine justices voted to toss the suit. The other two, both nominated by Republican Presidents, would have allowed the next step in the case but gave no indication how they would have ultimately decided. All three justices nominated by Donald Trump rejected the attempt outright.

Trump has been assuring his supporters for weeks that the Supreme Court would declare him the victor. That, of course, turned out to be another massive lie.

While some Trump- and GOP-filed lawsuits still remain on appeal, they have no hope of prevailing. The Supreme Court twice this week made it crystal clear they will not entertain this nonsense.

Trump's hopes of somehow winging a second term for himself have gone down the drain. The Electoral College will meet in each state on Monday and then Congress will finalize the results in early January.

Some Republican members of Congress are expected to object to vote certifications at that time, but they lack a majority to prevent finalization of the election.

President-elect Biden will be sworn into office at noon on January 20, 2021.
