The Tweeting Twit

Possibly one of Donald Trump's most inept moves yet as President occurred yesterday when he accidentally tweeted classified intelligence (details here).

The whole debacle began when Fox News reported classified details from two anonymous sources about how American intelligence had determined the North Korean military moved anti-ship cruise missiles to a patrol boat.

When asked to comment on the report in a subsequent interview, United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley wisely declined to discuss the matter. She also condemned whoever had leaked classified intelligence to the media.

Unknown to Haley, however, Trump tweeted the original Fox story, quite possibly because it was discussed on the pro-Trump program "Fox and Friends," which Trump is known to watch live in the Oval Office nearly every day (forget about national business when his favorite show is on).

This, of course, is the same Trump who condemns anonymous sources in any news story about him that he doesn't like. But when he thinks the piece makes him look good, he's more than happy to wave it around for all to see, anonymous sources included.

And, of course, it's the same Trump who has whined endlessly, often on Twitter, about the meanies who keep leaking about his inept actions (which typically are not a crime when no national security secrets are involved). The President still has not learned that his constant fuck-ups are not national security secrets nor classified intelligence.

This is not the first time Trump has recklessly revealed national security secrets. In May, he blabbed top secret information from another government to the Russians, something the foreign intelligence source had specifically mandated not occur as terms for sharing the material.

A current President is the one individual who cannot be prosecuted for leaking national security secrets, as a matter of law, no matter how sensitive.

So while it might not be illegal every time Trump opens his loose lips like this, it certainly isn't prudent nor wise. And it is something that can be used against him in impeachment proceedings, since that is a political and not a legal process.

Stepping On It

Aaron Blake at The Washington Post wrote an excellent piece yesterday (link here) about how Donald Trump's administration actually has some genuine good news, but the President himself is so inept that he buried that with yet another childish Twitter-storm, this time about a US Senator.

In locker room parlance, that's called "stepping on your own dick."

This suggests two things:

1) Once again, Trump is his own worst enemy. Rather than allowing communications professionals on his staff to shape the message, he thinks he's "smarter" (his own term) and knows all about shaping a message. Arrogance and narcissism are the reasons for this, two character flaws that are fatal to executive officer success.

2) He actually doesn't know very much about what is happening in his own administration. United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley seems to be the one running the policy show on this front. She may have been a less than mediocre governor, but she's actually doing a decent job in her current position. She deserves the credit for this, and not Trump. It's also worth nothing that she was a Never-Trump Republican until after the election.

Trump's Twitter use is a big net-negative for him. He seems to be the only one who believes he's using it to communicate effectively. Republican National Committee surveys have shown that even his own supporters overwhelmingly feel he needs to stop tweeting. Of course, he ignores any advice he doesn't want to hear and keeps self-destructing on Twitter.

Shower Power

Personally, I'm not a big fan of shower sex. I prefer sweaty, slippery, in-bed or on-the-couch sex. A shower, however, is a great place for frottage and to give and receive handjobs.

Two veteran foreign policy experts published a detailed article in Politico recently (link here) where they spell out how Trump is not only failing to fulfill his grandiose campaign promises, he's also making incredibly bad deals internationally for the United States.

"Half a year into the Trump era, there’s little evidence of Donald Trump, master negotiator," they write. "Quite the opposite, in fact: In several very important areas and with some very important partners, Trump seems to be getting the short end of the proverbial stick. The president who was going to put America first and outmaneuver allies and adversaries alike seems to be getting outsmarted by both at every turn, while the United States gets nothing."

Nowhere is this more evident than with Russia. Trump has completely caved and repeatedly. "Trump has become Putin’s poodle," the article concludes.

Vladimir Putin is an international intrigue grandmaster. Trump is a rank amateur. His Secretary of State has no diplomacy experience. Trump thinks a whole lot of bullshit would make Putin fold. The opposite resulted. Trump was chumped.

The article continues by noting how Saudi Arabia, China, North Korea, and Israel have successful played Trump. They won repeatedly. Trump lost every time and so did America.

Hopefully whoever succeeds Trump, Republican or Democrat, will be able to repair some of this damage.

This is a deeply troubling article but absolutely necessary reading. Please read the piece if you care at all about the United States, its security, and its future.

The Secret Archive

Last week, a federal court in Washington ordered the Justice Department and the FBI to release their still-secret archive of LGBT-purge files from that era (details here).

This now-pending release is of more than historical curiosity. The less the public knows about LGBT discrimination, the less bothered they will be when the Trump administration or any succeeding one attempts to strip away our rights, as happened again just last week when they argued that discrimination based on sexual orientation is not prohibited by federal law (details here).

The lawyer arguing for release of the documents said this is an important victory since people must "understand what the government did so we could do our best to avoid repeating history...because we’re at a time when the government — this particular administration — is not supportive of the LGBT community and preserving the civil rights that we have obtained."

Hopefully when this archive is released it will be available online for all to see. One can imagine that Attorney General Sessions will drag his feet on this release as much as possible.

Why We All Lose

I think it must be and many other LGBT people are of the same opinion.

Coincidentally, LGBT Nation republished an excellent article this week (link here) with the title "Three ways the LGB community is screwed if transgender rights fail."

The three arguments are laid out in detail. I'll just list them here:

1. LGB people can be banned from bathrooms and locker rooms, too.

2. "Don't ask don't tell" can be brought back to the military or anywhere else in the government and/or private sector.

3. LGB people will lose their last, best chance at job protections.

Read the piece and share it. We're all in this together. When some of us lose, we all lose.

And when we band together and fight back, without excluding anyone, then we are stronger.

Indictment Watch

Yesterday brought the shocking news that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has convened a second grand jury to investigate Donald Trump, his administration, his campaign, and his business practices. Witnesses will now be called before the grand jury and subpoenas issued.

Mueller is known to be investigating Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn as well as participants in the Trump Tower secret meeting with emissaries from the Russian government and Vladimir Putin, which included Trump's own son and son-in-law.

In a Los Angeles Times article yesterday about the second grand jury (link here), a Cornell University law professor was quoted as saying:

"This suggests the investigation will end with indictments."

Indictments lead to automatic arrest, booking, arraignment, surrender of a passport, and mandatory court appearances. They also many times lead to incarceration until trial unless a substantial bond is posted.

An indictment almost certainly means prosecution will follow, since the prosecutor who seeks the indictment also makes the decision about proceeding to a criminal trial. Usually the only way to prevent trial is for the indicted individual to plead guilty to certain charges in exchange for others being dropped. Pleading guilty almost always means prison time.

If members of Trump's campaign, his staff, and/or his family are indicted, it will seriously constrain his presidency. And that would not be a terrible thing.

Once again, Donald Trump is proving he's no friend of the LGBT community. Last week he nominated a reprehensible anti-LGBT hater as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom (details here).

As governor of Kansas and a vocal opponent of marriage equality, Brownback revoked a previous governor's executive order that provided non-discrimination protections to LGBT state employees. He also signed legislation that would allow universities to discriminate against and exclude LGBT student groups.

LGBT Americans have a constitutional right to marriage equality, a fact reaffirmed by the United States Supreme Court several times. It's amazing how many Republicans are willing to look the other way when certain of their peers, including the President, are perfectly happy implying that LGBT Americans should be treated as second-class citizens and that their constitutional rights should be ignored.

I can't imagine they would be so cavalier if one of their members said interracial marriage was wrong or that the law should ban marriage between Christians and Jews. The Republican Party's selective hate is appalling.

At a minimum, Trump's nomination of Brownback once again proves the President lied. He is not pro-LGBT as he claimed during the campaign; he's clearly anti-LGBT, as his actions reveal.

Jack the Lad

Faking News

Donald Trump has a simple rule for media reportage. Whenever he is confronted with a negative article about him, his administration, and/or his businesses, he simply declares it "fake news" and tells his supporters it's all a fabrication by unseen forces out to "get" him.

Well, it turns out fake news is real, and it's Trump himself who is faking it.

On Monday night, The Washington Post broke an explosive story (link here) that the President himself was involved in drafting a misleading statement about his son's meeting with emissaries of the Russian government during the campaign last year.

Some legal experts are now theorizing that this dissembling campaign by Trump and key members of his administration could lead to criminal obstruction of justice charges in the future. If so, then Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the criminal investigation into Trump, his businesses, and his campaign, likely could assign investigators to this newest scandal.

As was revealed yesterday, this wasn't the only time Trump was faking news.

National Public Radio broke the shocking story (link here) that the President himself, plus unidentified staffers, a key Trump supporter, and Fox News conspired to create a fake news story about the murder of Seth Rich, an employee of the Democratic Party. The fake news was designed to distract from the growing media coverage of Trump's mushrooming Russian scandals.

This leads us to the big question of why the President is always trying to deflect attention away from his Russian scandals and stop the investigations.

Is he trying to hide something?

Are these the actions of an innocent man?

As you probably know, billionaire Thiel is a prominent entrepreneur and venture capitalist who happens to be gay. He also is a well known supporter of libertarian, conservative, and Republican politics and causes.

Thiel publicly endorsed Donald Trump's presidential campaign, gave a $1.25 million donation to pro-Trump political action committees, and spoke in support of Trump as a keynote speaker at the 2016 GOP national convention.

At the time, the Trump campaign was claiming the candidate was pro-LGBT as proven by support from people like Thiel. And Thiel made some comments in interviews that he was satisfied that a President Trump would not attack LGBT rights.

Six months after being sworn into office, however, Trump, Pence, Sessions, and others have shown their true stripes. As the linked Queerty notes, the Trump administration is the most anti-LGBT since Ronald Reagan's.

Yet Thiel remains silent. That's because he puts politics before his identity and his community. This is not the first time he has done thi -- he has donated to many openly anti-LGBT candidates in the past.

This kind of behavior is nothing short of self-loathing on Thiel's part. He's acting like someone who hates the fact that he's gay.

Otherwise, why would he support people who hate him and want to strip away his rights?

Alexander
