Last night, the New York Times broke the story (link here) that right after Donald Trump fired former FBI director James Comey, "law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president's behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests."

This was all before appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead a criminal investigation into Trump and his associates. The FBI investigation was then merged into Mueller's efforts.

The rationale for this action is described as follows: because "Trump had ousted the head of the F.B.I. to impede or even end the Russia investigation, that was both a possible crime and a national security concern."

Trump has tried to paint the Mueller investigation as politically motivated, notwithstanding that Mueller himself is a Republican and that Trump's own Assistant Attorney General made the decision to engage a Special Counsel. The fact that the FBI independently decided something might be seriously wrong, independent of and before the Mueller investigation began, demonstrates further that it wasn't politically motivated.

One has to wonder if this is the first time in American history whether a President has been investigated for being a secret asset for a foreign government, meaning Trump came under investigation for being a possible spy.

This will be a hot story in the media this weekend so keep your eye on the news for any important updates. When a story breaks in one outlet, competing media organizations often will double down on trying to find further details on a topic.
