Hush Hush

Over the weekend, the Washington Post broke the story (link here) that Donald Trump has gone to extraordinary and unprecedented lengths to conceal details from even his senior staff about what happened during several secret meetings he had with Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin.

As a result, even the highly classified administration records that a President's staff normally keeps are empty when it comes to what happened when Trump met in secret with Putin. And Trump reportedly took away an interpreter's notes after one such meeting and ordered that person not to speak about what happened with any other member of staff.

Trump has also met alone with Putin on several occasions when the only other person in attendance was Putin's translator.

Considering Trump has been slavishly pro-Russian and always takes Russia's side in any controversy, to the point of trashing American government officials and endeavors, this repeated situation is all the more troubling.

While Robert Mueller's criminal investigation into Trump and his associates is looking at possible illegal contacts during the campaign, his scope would be limited on this issue in the period after Trump was sworn into office. And if the House of Representatives pushes for details, Trump could simply claim executive privilege and cut them off at the pass.

Hence, the American public and anyone inside our government may never know what occurred during the meetings. Considering Russia is an adversary and not an ally, Trump may go to his grave without disclosing what actually happened. That fact should trouble everyone outside Russia.
