Spanking the Monkey

I don't know anyone who has ever walked into a public shower and seen another bloke beating his meat. I have a feeling that sort of thing happens far more often in porn than it does in the real world. I've never really understood how the phrase "spanking the monkey" could be used with any semblance of accuracy to describe masturbation. This lad's motions look a bit like spanking, so perhaps that's a hint about the term's origins.
