Backsliding

Last week the Washington Post published a thought-provoking opinion piece (link here) with the depressing title of "I thought gay rights were safe. Now I know I was wrong."

A lesbian woman writes about how, in age of Donald Trump, surveys are showing Americans are growing more intolerant of LGBT people. While this can't all be linked to the President, it can be in part.

We must always remember that when a right is finally recognized and made legal, that's not cast in concrete. A look back through American history will provide a number of examples.

The right of African-Americans to be considered equal to white Americans, the right to vote, and other rights were enshrined in the three constitutional amendments that came immediately after the Civil War. Those rights, however, were seriously eroded many times in the ensuing years.

The same could happen with LGBT rights. The current administration is intent on eroding our rights by presidential directives and nominations. That will continue as long as Trump holds office and possibly during that of his successor, should he or she be a conservative Republican.

Thus we must remain informed, vigilant, and engaged. If you're eligible to vote, you should be registered to vote and regularly voting in every election. You need to read, listen, and watch the legitimate and reliable news media. And, when our rights are threatened, we need to speak out, loud and quickly.

  1. It's always like the «Never Ending Story» in USA about, what is modern social evolution in other democratic countries, for giving to ALL its population full HUMAN RIGHTS.

Such issues are way behind us in Canada and our society is far more open to the «OTHER» may he is not of our sex orientation or religion or color of skin.
Canada was hosting wide open arms the black people during the Civil War and did the same for those young ones that didn't want to participate in the foolish Vietnam war.
In the «45» administration, last summer and surely in the future, Canada did and will have more «refugies» from USA like the Haitians, Africans and Dreamers fleeing USA.

For the LGBT rights, to me they will always be in danger as long as the ultra religious Americans will put those narrow minded politicians in office and any government parts.

The difference between our two countries is very deep in regard of our Constitution and democratic system.

We have multi-party elections that prevent the big polarisation of ideas.
In USA having only Démocrates and Republicans isn't giving your people sufficient possibilities of ideas to choose for.
What you call «Liberals» in USA we call them «Conservative» in Canada.
ALL adult over 18yo is automatically listed on ALL electoral level. We can always verify if our name and address are updated.
No need here to always have to register in any electoral lists.

USA hasn't really entered the 21st century of way of respecting human rights.
Yes, you can bare guns and kill anytime, anyone, which is NOT a right but in USA it is and that is so sad.
While the LIFE rights are denied in many ways.

When I saw the movies like «Hidden Figures» and «When We Rise», I see that HUMAN RIGHTS in USA has a very long way to go since those movies tell stories frome the 60's to today.

As the battles for LGBT rights in «When We Rise» and your title «Backsliding» those will always be the never ending story in USA depending on who will win your bipartisan electoral system.
Most of all, when you mix again your Christian religious lobby in Washington and mainly in the «Bible Belt» states.

Thank MY God, I live in Canada.
