What If?

Columnist Bret Stephens had an excellent opinion piece in yesterday's New York Times (link here) with the title "What if Clinton Had Done All This?"

The premise to what he calls his "thought experiment" is simple: what if Hillary Clinton was elected in November 2016 and has done all of the things Donald Trump has done in the Russia collusion scandal -- would Republicans in Congress insist it was all a "nothingburger"? Or would they be busy trying to impeach Clinton?

The answer should be obvious. If you believe Republicans would give Clinton a free pass and rush to her defense as they've done with Trump, then I have a bridge to sell you.

I've not yet written about the whole scandal involving the so-called Nunes memo because the news keeps changing hourly. In a sentence, Republicans in the House have been clamoring for release of a highly deceptive and partisan memo that attempts to derail the criminal investigation into Trump and his associates being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

As of this writing, Trump has signed off on releasing the memo. The reason is obvious: he's desperate to do anything to hide his criminality.

We are at a very dark place in American history. When Richard Nixon committed crimes and attempted to obstruct justice, Republicans in Congress were cooperating in investigations and voting for impeachment. But now, with Trump, too many Republicans are acting like Trump's co-conspirators and accomplicese while all in plain sight.

These Republicans are putting party before country and hoping America will not notice. It's an extremely risky move for so many reasons, particularly given this is a midterm year.

Don't let them get away with this crime against the nation.
