Double Humiliation

As expected, Luther Strange was defeated by Roy Moore yesterday in the special runoff election held in Alabama for their open Senate seat. Moore will now face off against Democrat Doug Jones in the November general election.

This result was important for two reasons.

First, Donald Trump endorsed and campaigned for Strange. The fact that he couldn't turn out the vote in a deeply Republican state shows how much Trump's power has diminished. Republicans in Congress obviously noticed this, too, and it thus gives them more incentive to defy Trump or even, eventually, to impeach him.

Second, Moore is a horrible candidate. He wants to turn America into a theocracy. He's so extreme, so far to the right, that he's not particularly popular in a red state, which means Democrat Jones could be elected. Recent polls show him now running about even with Moore.

If the Democrats were able to win this seat, it would be further humiliation for Trump. And it would send a shocking message to Washington -- Trump is poison for the Republican Party, so much so that he turns red states blue.

As if yesterday wasn't bad enough for the President, the Senate also announced they were abandoning a vote on Trumpcare, the measure that would repeal parts of Obamacare and gut the rest. Trump, of course, will try to pass the buck on this, but the failure rests solidly on his shoulders.

Remember when Trump bragged during the campaign that his administration would have so much winning? Hubris has a nasty habit of coming back to bite you on the ass, Donny.
