Now as a result of a breaking story in the Washington Post on Sunday (link here), Postmaster General Louis DeJoy may face criminal charges over an entirely unrelated matter not previously publicly known.
Turns out DeJoy asked employees to donate to Republican candidates. He then awarded them "bonuses" for their work. If you didn't make a donation, you received no bonus.
Such straw donor schemes are illegal and regularly prosecuted both in state and federal court because they evade campaign contribution limits and disclosure requirements. Depending on how the "bonuses" were structured, criminal wire fraud and criminal tax laws may also have been violated.
While Trump could preemptively pardon DeJoy before he is prosecuted, that would only be for federal crimes. The "bonuses" in question were paid in North Carolina, where the governor is a Democrat, meaning a pardon is out of the question. As well, the state's attorney general, who could stop any prosecution, is also a Democrat.
Why is it a non-stop parade of criminality in the Trump administration?
The election is eight weeks from today. You can learn more about voter registration and check your status by clicking here. Registration will close in only a few weeks, roughly a month before the election, so do it today.
