Undoubtedly recognizing that fact, Trump's campaign clipped a very brief sentence fragment from a Fauci news appearance out of context and used it fraudulently in a new television ad to suggest the doctor was praising the President for his handling of the Covid-19 crisis.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The sentence fragment was used completely out of context and without Fauci's permission (details here). It also made Fauci appear to violate the Hatch Act, which prohibits civil servants like Fauci from making any political endorsement.
Here is a narrative of the relevant portion from the ad. "President Trump is recovering from the coronavirus, and so is America," the ad's narrator says. "Together we rose to meet the challenge, protecting our seniors, getting them life-saving drugs in record time, sparing no expense. President Trump tackled the virus head-on, as leaders should."
The ad then cuts to Fauci where he says, "I can't imagine that anybody could be doing more." That, of course, makes it appear he's praising the President. However, in reality, he wasn't even speaking about Trump.
This is the full quote from which the Trump campaign dishonestly snipped a fragment. Fauci said:
"I have been devoting almost full time on this — almost full time. I’m down at the White House virtually every day with the task force. I’m connected by phone throughout the day and into the night and when I say night, I’m talking twelve, one, two in the morning. I’m not the only one. There’s a whole group of us that are doing that. It’s every single day. So I can’t imagine that that under any circumstances that anybody could be doing more. I mean, obviously, we’re fighting a formidable enemy — this virus. This virus is a serious issue here."
As you can see, he's actually talking about himself and his team. Trump isn't even mentioned.
Shameless. And shameful. If only Trump had focused as much attention on Covid-19 as he and his staff do when fabricating lies about the President.
