Hubris and Arrogance

Against his doctors' recommendations, Donald Trump left the hospital at 6:30 pm last night, ensuring live coverage on national television during the evening news, returned to the White House by helicopter, stomped up the steps to the Truman Balcony (an entrance he normally never uses) while visibly gasping for air, and made a show of removing his mask (details here).

He will still be infectious for Covid19 for as much as seven to fourteen more days or possibly even longer.

Since Trump was known to be infected, more than twenty senior West Wing officials and other White House visitors plus their family members have tested positive, quite possibly infected by him.

Because he is still shedding infectious pathogens, anyone who now comes somewhat close to Trump, even if they are wearing full medical-grade protection, risks infection and sickness and even death. It is for this reason that a high percentage of medical personnel who treat Covid patients become infected themselves.

He is putting everyone at risk so that he may look "strong." He is not yet cured. He doesn't seem to realize or care that he could easily have a turn for the worse at any moment. The onetime presidential candidate Herman Cain recently became infected with Covid, and after repeatedly telling the media he was better and stronger and ready to be discharged, he promptly died.

Trump's stunt last night has to be one of the most hubristic and arrogant of any President in the modern age. He simply does not care about anyone else. He won't even wear a mask to protect others. Only he matters. We don't.

This arrogance is dangerous for our country. He is a man who will take needless risks just to make himself look good in his own eyes. What he projects, however, is raging insecurity. Strong people don't need to make a spectacle of themselves.
