The First Gay President?

Whilst Donald Trump, Michael Pence, and the GOP seem determined to yank the country backward into the Middle Ages, where "pray away gay" would be the order of the day, it's refreshing to see one contender for Chair of the Democratic National Party is Peter Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana (link here).

Buttigieg is a Harvard graduate, a Rhodes Scholar, and a Navy veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan. As for why he wants to lead the Democratic Party, he said, "I can’t think of something more meaningful than organizing the opposition in the face of what I think will be a pretty monstrous presidency and challenging time out here in the states."

Whatever the outcome of the DNC race, Buttigieg is definitely a face to watch. Indeed, even the New York Times has speculated that he might be American's first gay President (link here).

Indiana certainly is a study in contrasts. On one hand, you have the rabidly homophobic governor who is soon to be the Vice President. And on the other hand, you have an openly gay major from one of Indiana's largest cities. Pence is the past; Buttigieg is the future.

Actually if you knew enough about American history, you'd be aware that we had a clearly gay president in the 1850s - James Buchanan!

    1. I know all about James Buchanan and Rose O'Neal Greenhow. However, whether or not he was gay has never been proven.
