Sticky Fingers

NBC broke the story yesterday afternoon about how Donald Trump's former campaign chairman had written the word "donations" in his notes during the now infamous meeting with Trump's son, Trump's son-in-law, Vladimir Putin's emissary, and a Russian spy (link here).

Campaign donations from foreign nationals are illegal. Soliciting and/or accepting donations from such people can lead to criminal charges, prosecution, and prison time if convicted.

Considering there were no US citizens in the meeting besides those affiliated with Trump, why was "donations" written in the campaign chairman's notes? Did the topic come up? Who brought it up? Was it agreed beforehand to bring it up?

Now let's say illegal campaign donations were discussed. Or the campaign chairman later approached the Russians about illegal donations. Trump himself may be completely unaware of this.

But that doesn't mean he's out of the woods. The feds could use the campaign chair, if he admits guilt to save his own neck, to turn on Trump and reveal all he knows.

The bottom line is that anything uncovered in this investigation can be used as leverage to turn someone for the purpose of giving evidence against Trump, the big prize. His own son and son-in-law probably would never do this.

But the former campaign chairman most certainly would. That fact has to be keeping Trump up at nights.
