Forty Four Speaks

President Obama did something rarely witnessed yesterday: a former President harshly criticized a sitting President in public (details here).

Althrough Donald Trump has repeatedly said vicious and flat-out lies about President Obama, the latter has remained silent out of respect for the tradition that former Presidents do not critique sitting Presidents.

But the time has come to step past that.

"I get this president wants full credit for the economy he inherited and zero blame for the pandemic he ignored," Obama said with his trademark gift for turning a phrase. "But you know what? The job doesn’t work that way. Tweeting at the television doesn’t fix things. Making stuff up doesn’t make people’s lives better. You’ve got to have a plan."

Trump, truly, generally has no plan and usually stumbles around at a loss for what to do.

"I never thought Donald Trump would embrace my vision or continue my polices, but I did hope for the sake of the country, that he might show some interest in taking the job seriously," Obama said. "But it hasn’t happened. He hasn’t showed any interest in doing the work or helping anybody but himself and his friends."

Hard truths at a time when they're most needed.
