Like an Umbrella

A Spectacular Failure
While running for President and after being sworn into office, Donald Trump repeatedly declared how he would solve the problem of North Korea, notwithstanding he had no foreign policy nor defense experience. At one point, he said he could handle the problem and develop a solution within an hour.
Flash forward to the second year of his presidency and his attempt at diplomacy with North Korea has become an unmitigated disaster. He thought he was "strong" and could bully North Korea, but they're now just making a fool of Trump and the United States as well.
Nowhere was this more evident than in the disastrous North Korea trip made by Trump's Secretary of State just this weekend (details here). Less than two years into his administration, Trump is already on his second Secretary of State, and neither of his choices had any prior diplomatic experience. The results of that experiential deficiency was obvious this weekend in Pyongyang.
Trump foolishly thinks diplomacy and foreign policy are easy and that he's bound to succeed, simply because he thinks he's "smart." This is evidenced in the fact that he doesn't even bother reading the briefing details before he meets with foreign leaders (details here).
But when it comes to diplomacy, "winging it" is not a strategy. It is a formula for disaster. You can't just bullshit foreign leaders, as Trump does, and expect then to eat out of your hand. More likely they'll bite your hand for patronizing them.
This will not end well. All we can hope for is that the horrible ending won't be all-consuming.

The Big Con
Vanity Fair published a great shorter article on Friday (link here) with the title "Surprise: Donald Trump’s Entire Anti-Immigration Agenda Is a Con."
But it really is no surprise. For a long time, Trump has pretended to be anti-immigration and has pushed anti-immigrant policies.
But in his private life, he signs a different tune. His current wife and a previous wife were both immigrants. A great majority of his self-pimping products, particularly all garments, are made overseas. His daughter's "designer" line of clothing is also all made overseas.
And, once again, Trump has applied for and been granted special seasonal visas so that he can fill his Mar-a-Lago resort with cheap foreign workers while openly refusing to hire Americans who have applied for the same jobs.
As well, this week came the news the Trump had contracted with a company in China to make his 2020 campaign merchandise overseas.
The reason Trump has this blatant and hypocritical double-standard is simple -- demagoguery, the naked pandering to people's emotions and prejudices. Trump is a grand master of demagoguery bar none, notwithstanding he's so woefully inept in so many other ways. He understands how to push his supporter's buttons, particularly when it comes to matters of race.
Demagogues are usually disgusting hypocrites, and Trump is certainly no exception to that rule.

Dark Horizons
CNBC published a troubling piece yesterday (link here) with the title "Experts think Trump's Supreme Court nominee could rule against gays, lesbians in employment cases."
Althought a relevant case is not now pending before the high court, many legal experts expect there soon will be, given the federal appellate courts have come down on both sides of the issue. That sort of divide typically makes an issue more likely to be taken up by the Supremes, who typically pass on more than 99 percent of cases appealed to them.
Donald Trump's staff has already released the list of three finalists for the nomination, and none of them have specifically ruled on a sexual orientation discrimination case. But given how Trump openly admits how the ultra-conservative Federalist Society and the LGBT-hating Heritage Foundation are selecting all the names for his nominees pool, it's likely the final choice would favor an employer and not the victim in any sexual orientation discrimination appeal.
The most troubling name on Trump's list of finalists is Amy Coney Barrett, who has been a federal judge for less than a year. She has strong ties to several ultra-conservative Catholic organizations and has spoken before the so-called "Alliance Defending Freedom," an anti-LGBT hate group.
The bottom line is that the final justice nominee choice will either be full-on horrible or slightly less horrible. Hoping for one of the latter is little consolation.
Nonetheless, this choice is likely to expose yet again the disgusting lie that Trump is pro-LGBT. He has proven to be anything but.

Gone, Baby, Gone
Donald Trump's highly controversial Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt resigned yesterday (details here). As the linked article notes, Pruitt was "one of the most scandal-plagued Cabinet officials in U.S. history."
As scandal after scandal piled up, Trump stood by Pruitt. For someone who claimed he had gone to Washington to "drain the swamp," the feckless President was curiously quiet about the boggiest creature in his own administration.
While Pruitt's many scandals garnered most of the headlines, the wholesale destruction he caused at the environmental agency was the true tragedy. Pruitt was determined to damage the environment, not protect it. While he may soon be gone, it will take a long time to erase the damage he's done.
We cannot expect that his replacement will be much better. Trump will undoubtedly nominate another candidate who will not protect the environment. This destruction will continue through the end of trump's hopefully single term.

Even after the Defense Secretary and the National Security Advisor explained why that would be a very bad idea, Trump persisted, noting how the invasions of Grenada and Panama were successful. Of course, the historically and geographically ignorant Trump doesn't remember that neither invasion was about taking over a country.
Only a small part of the tiny island country of Grenada was occupied by American forces to evacuate some students. And in Panama, the American military was in country to extradite its dictator Manuel Noriega and only occupied portions of the capital to help secure an orderly transition of government.
Nonetheless, even after Trump's staff talked the idea down, he later brought it up in discussions with the president of Columbia. And then, yet again in talks with four Latin American leaders, he brought it up once more, and each of the four told him it was a bad idea.
Nonetheless, Trump still persisted. Once again, the National Security Advisor had to explain why it was a really bad idea.

The Prisoner’s Dilemma
The New Yorker published an intriguing article on Tuesday (link here) speculating whether or not Donald Trump's former lawyer, fixer, and bagman Michael Cohen is turning on him.
Will he be another John Dean, who was Richard Nixon's lawyer who turned on him and revealed some of the darkest Watergate secrets? Or will he be loyal to the end, remaining silent and receive, he would hope, a presidential pardon from Trump? Each choice is fraught with risk.
I don't know if I agree with this statement by the article's author: "Trump, for his part, has enormous power to punish ... Cohen. As President, Trump can ... use the full law-enforcement power of the federal government to punish him."
Not really. Federal law prevents any President from ordering the Justice Department to prosecute someone. And if Cohen is already working with federal prosecutors and testifying against Trump, those prosecutors will work on the plea deal and, by law, cannot be directed by the White House.
Cohen has made vague noises in recent days that he is inclined to squeal and deal rather than remain silent. He said in an interview that his greatest loyalty was to his family, not the President.
Of course, of greatest interest to the general public is -- what does Cohen know? Prosecutors would only offer him a plea deal if he has knowledge and evidence of any criminal acts by Trump himself, so presumably something is there, given ongoing discussions between Cohen's lawyers and Justice Department lawyers.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the criminal investigation in to Donald Trump, brilliantly handed off the Cohen matter to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. So if Trump can somehow derail Mueller's investigation or fire him, the case against Cohen will continue.
But the biggest question of all will be if Cohen sings and tells of Trump's criminal deeds, will Republicans in Congress continue to look the other way? Or will the American people grow so outraged that members of Congress put their own reelection chances ahead of any loyalty to Trump.
Time will probably tell. Stay tuned.

Meaning this trial could be very embarassing for Trump and hurt his party's midterm chances this year. It could show, per the article, that "the Trump Foundation evolved from a mere tax-avoidance scheme into an instrument for carrying out potential acts of campaign-finance fraud."
Trump's lawyers tried to delay the trial because of the midterms, but the judge merely laughed at that and said not only that they would proceed and that Trump himself may be required to appear at the trial. And as the U.S. Supreme Court already ruled long before Trump was elected, a sitting President cannot delay a civil trial or refuse to appear simply because he has an important office.

Trump is pushing them because he believes the same nonsense about trade deficits as tariff hawks believed in the 1980s, and tariffs only ended up increasing the trade deficit.
Trump has kited up the national debt with his unnecessary tax cuts that aren't paid for, so if he actually understood trade, finance, and economics, he needs trade deficits in order for foreign investors to have more money to buy his debt. So turning off the faucet will actually harm his own policies, not to mention his own voters.
One is tempted to cheer on Trump's self-destructive policy because it will hurt him at the polls, but that means other people will suffer. Nonetheless, it's yet another piece of evidence demonstrating how Trump is the worst President in modern American history.
