The Offer

The lawyer for Julian Assange, currently fighting extradition from London to the United States to face criminal espionage charges, claimed in a court filing yesterday that Donald Trump offered to pardon his client if Assange said Russia had no role in the 2016 Democratic National Committee email leaks (details here).

When determining whether someone is lying about a matter like this, we must first consider how he or she could possibly benefit from being dishonest. I can't see any here. If the lawyer is lying, he's scuttled any chance of an actual pardon, so why would he do that?

The behavior is very much in keeping with Trump these days: since the sham Senate trial of abuse of power, the President has been caught several times engaging in quid pro quoa in recent days, now that Senate Republicans have roved too gutless to constrain him.

And finally, Trump trying to protect Russia is bizarrely in keeping with behavior he's exhibited ever since the election. (He must have borrowed a hell of a lot from them to finance his real estate holdings.)

So all in all, the story seems likely. And it's more than likely the Senate will do absolutely nothing about it to learn more.

Financial Ruin

I've said many times here before, when a Republican criticizes Donald Trump, that's someone worth our attention. To that end, a Republican former governor and member of Congress wrote a withering op-ed about the President in yesterday's New York Times worth noting.

The piece (link here) is titled "Why Do My Fellow Republicans Make Excuses for Trump's Deficits?" with the more provocative deck title of "He is driving the country to financial ruin. And his own party is letting it happen."

Debt and deficits are necessary during economic downturns to speed an economy toward recovery. That's why President Obama used them during the financial crisis at the beginning of his presidency. He then turned away from them as the economy recovered.

Under Trump, however, with the economy still expanding (but at a slower rate), he and his GOP enablers have exploded debt and deficits to record highs. That makes utterly no sense economically. It's a binge that will cause a particularly painful financial hangover in the intermediate future.

Worse still, the next time the economy hits a recession, which is inevitable, the already crippling debt will weaken the usual monetary tools needed to speed a recovery, thereby prolonging the downturn.

Trump's reckless budgets also underscore Republicans' whopping hypocrisy: they criticize debt when it's used to shore up a sagging economy in recession, a necessary tool, yet they look the other way when it's used at a much larger pace when it's utterly unneeded.

This will not end well. It could result in runaway inflation. It could result in economic stagnation. Or worse, it could collapse real growth, bring on a serious depression, lead to default, and thus push the American economy off a cliff.

Argentina's economic history offers a good lesson in how a strong economy can be destroyed with the sorts of reckless policies Trump has enacted with the GOP's health. From 1880 to 1930, the country experienced phenomenal economic growth, some of the highest ever recorded in human history.

Thereafter, the country's leaders made a series of economically disastrous decisions that pushed the economy off a cliff. As a result, the economy has never recovered to the levels seen nearly a century ago.

Something of the same could happen to the United States. Some fiscal roadmaps are so disastrous that they permanently cripple an economy. Trump seems determined to go down that road. The question is why.

The Grifter

Mother Jones, the investigative political and current affairs magazine, published an interesting and revealing article on Sunday (link here) about Paula White, a televangelist and fringe evangelical "minister" who has latched on to Donald Trump and vice versa.

White is clearly a grifter of the highest order. For instance, she recently told her followers to send her as much of their earnings as possible, even if that meant they didn't pay their electric bill. If they paid the bill, they'd be putting the electric company above God, she claimed.

In the past, she has sold promises of eternal salvation to followers by urging them to give her $1,144 for a package of "resurrection seeds" that grant eternal life.

White and Trump have been associated with each other since 2006 when he appeared on her television show to promote one of his get-rich-quick books. She now also has a consulting job on religious matters inside the White House.

White is obviously using religion to fleece the gullible. And Trump has obviously used his alleged real estate expertise to fleece the gullible with things like Trump University.

It's not surprising these two bottom feeders have latched onto each other for self-enrichment.

Disbelief

An interview in Salon yesterday (link here) considers this thesis: "Does Donald Trump believe in America?"

In my opinion, the answer is obvious — no. Trump is a rapacious narcissist. Hence, America is not an ideal to preserve and defend. It's a mark you can fleece for your own personal gain.

By accident or design, he actively and openly perverts the idea of America for his own personal enrichment. If you support him, his pitch goes, you will help make America great again. You are a true patriot. You make America stronger simply by supporting him. He is the state. He is America.

Anyone who opposes him is beneath contempt. He openly mocks and defames these people. He refuses to recognize a fundamental principle of democracy รข€” not everyone agrees at all times on something, but by working together we can craft a workable solution. He has no interest in this. Do it his way or else. Do it his way or your're a traitor, a word he throws around liberally.

Trump and Trumpism is now a cancer on America. The democracy can only be saved by excising completely that cancer. That can be done this November at the ballot box. He's trying to subvert the process, to void your and my vote. But if enough of us vote, he will fail at his attempts to do so and will be removed from office.

The Meddler

From a starting point, it's helpful to know that America's attorney general almost never gets involved in reviewing or second-guessing an ongoing criminal prosecution. This is doubly so when defendants are friends and associates of a President.

Until now.

For at least the third time, it appears Donald Trump's attorney general William Barr is meddling in a criminal prosecution involving an associate of the President (details here). The linked article notes there may be more cases Barr has become involved in, too.

Between the Roger Stone prosecution and the Michael Flynn investigation, some critics are now saying Barr is attempting to undo the results of the Mueller investigation. Some pundits are even wondering if he's doing this in advance of a Trump pardon of those who have already been convicted in the Mueller probe — if charges are dropped against some, that may be an attempt to make it appear the convictions were somehow tainted.

Curiously, Barr was scrupulous about adhering to Department of Justice policies and precedents when it came to pursuing any charges against Trump growing out of the Mueller report. But when the shoe is on the other foot, when friends and associates of Trump have already been convicted, Barr is perfectly happy to discard Department of Justice policies and precedents.

Rained-Out Swim Party

When a swim party is rained out, the lads must head in doors and find some entertainment. There are no cards to be found in the house nor any board games. The TV isn't working. So that leaves truth or dare, but then that goes seriously off track.

The Accused Confesses

One of the central planks in Donald Trump's defense during the whole Ukraine scandal investigation and his subsequent impeachment trial was his claim that he did not send his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to Ukraine to dig up dirt on Joe Biden's son. Trump insisted Giuliani did this on his own and Trump had no idea what was going on.

On Thursday, however, Trump admitted that was a big fat lie (details here and here).

If the House was so inclined, they could now impeach him again because of his admission. And then Trump would be lacking a key component of his defense. For strategic reasons, of course, the House is extremely unlikely to impeach again without a marked increase in Trump's disapproval numbers. The President almost certainly knows this.

What he doesn't seem to know, however, is that he could still be prosecuted as a private citizen for his Ukraine-related crimes once he leaves office. And by blabbing out a confession now, he has just weakened a potential key element of his defense in a future criminal trial.

Trump has confessed before to his crimes like this, most notoriously in an interview with Lester Holt at NBC where he admitted to firing FBI Director James Comey because the latter had ordered investigations into his campaign and more.

This episode once again demonstrates how Trump cannot keep his mouth shut when there's a strategic reason to do so, even when it's to his own personal benefit. This is an extraordinary flaw in an American President, who out of necessity must remember to keep secret a wide variety of matters.

And, of course, Trump has blabbed critical national security secrets to friends, while speaking publicly, when meeting with foreign leaders, and during press interviews.

Putting aside all the self-dealing and lying and corruption, his total lack of discretion is reason enough that he should be soundly defeated at the ballot box in November. He's putting America's security and future at risk.

Creature of Habit

During Donald Trump's impeachment trial, several Republican Senators publicly speculated that the President would be more retrained in the future, that he would "learn his lesson" from the whole experience.

Fat chance.

Less than a week after the trial's disgraceful ending, Trump is once again trying to extort personal benefits through a quid pro quo by using the power of his office (details here). This time the victim of his shakedown is New York State.

He's offering to do something for them — and in public on Twitter, no less — in return for their stopping investigations and lawsuits directed at him personally, his family, and his business.

It's Ukraine all over again but even worse this time.

If he's doing this in public, how many times has he done this in private but the public hasn't found out? How many times more will he do it while remaining in office.

This corruption must end. We need to do everything we can to see he's soundly defeated in November.

An Antidote for Lies

Donald Trump's big argument for why he should be reelected is nothing short of a bundle of lies. He falsely claims shamelessly that the economy is the strongest it's ever been and that he turned around what he claims was President Obama's disastrous economic mess.

The Huffington Post published a great piece on Monday (link here) with hard stats that shows what a liar he is. Trump’s first three years in office, for instance, saw 1.5 million fewer jobs created than during Obama’s last three years in office — 6.6 million for Trump versus 8.1 million for Obama.

The piece lays bare more of Trump's lies. It's a great article to share with anyone tempted to vote for Trump as an antidote for his lies. The economy isn't nearly as strong as he claims it is and he's just been coasting along on Obama's success but is losing the momentum established by his predecessor.

Kissing Cousins

These two lads aren't really cousins but they could pass for them because there is some resemblance. The top, Tyler, is from Norway while Matt, the bottom, is from Poland, so perhaps they have a common Viking ancestor.

Further Fallout

Donald Trump's longtime close friend Roger Stone is due to be sentenced next week by a federal court after having been found guilty of seven counts of witness tampering and lying to investigators about his attempt to obstruct Congress's investigation of the President and also his role in the 2016 campaign.

As is required by court procedures, government prosecutors filed their sentencing recommendation this week and called for Stone to be imprisoned for seven to nine years.

Trump howled with outrage on Twitter about his felonious friend's proposed sentence. Top-level officials at the Justice Department thereafter ordered prosecutors to seek a much lighter sentence. Interference in a prosecution like this is extraordinarily rare and largely prohibited by Justice Department regulations.

In response, all the prosecutors on the case withdrew to protest the political interference (details here). One of them even resigned from the Justice Department in protest.

Per reporting by NBC, the Attorney General is now meddling in all matters that might affect Trump (details here). Did Trump order him to do this?

Hopefully, the House of Representatives will look into this and soon. The Senate, of course, will do nothing. They castrated themselves during the impeachment trial, refusing to confront Trump, and now he's feeling invincible.

Trump is now unrestrained and the cowardly Senate will continue to give him free reign. How many more laws will be broken and crimes committed while they sit on their hands and look the other way?

This can all be fixed in the November election, by tossing Trump out on the street and his Senate majority with him.

Again?

The conservative George Conway wrote an intriguing piece for the Washington Post yesterday (link here or here) about how Donald Trump has already made the case for impeaching him again.

Conway is right on the law and he's right on his moral stance. However, I don't think the House should even think about impeaching Trump again unless there's a strong shift in public sentiment away from the President.

Let's say, for instance, Trump is barely reelected by winning the Electoral College again while losing the popular vote again, but the Senate swings to Democratic control and Democrats retain control of the House, which is certainly a real possibility. Congress and the White House would probably be battling constantly as Trump tried to end run the legislature and just outright ignored them.

If impeachment happened again, the Senate would hold a real impeachment trial that would be nothing like the sham of late. But without two-thirds vote to remove, it would once again be a draw and only embolden Trump further. The stalemate would worsen.

Only if public sentiment turns strongly against Trump, as happened with Nixon, then a vote to remove would become possible.

But there's a better way to handle this. The election is in nine months. Better to vote Trump out of office. A high enough voter turnout will overcome the slight Electoral College advantage that Trump has.

That's why volunteering for Trump's general election opponent is so helpful because even if you're not in a swing state, you can still phone bank from home for the campaign and call voters in a swing state. If you live in a state that borders adjoins swing state and you live close to the state line, you can always go "over there" and volunteer in person.

This time, as voters, let's impeach Trump ourselves by voting him out of office, thus saving Congress the hassle.
