The Admission

Over the weekend, Donald Trump posted an admission on Twitter that his campaign had attempted to collude with Russia (details here) during the now infamous Trump Tower meeting with Kremlin operatives. With this confession, Trump effectively admits that he, his staff, and his son had lied about the meeting in the past.

Arguably Trump did not consciously make this admission or realize he had done so. Like most prolific liars, he can't keep track of his own dissembling and deceptions. The Roman rhetorician Marcus Fabius Quintilianus once famously said "a liar should have a good memory," and Trump clearly lacks that, as his many past inconsistencies have shown.

As well, there's no good reason for Trump to admit this, further suggesting it was a mistake, unless he thought he could convince people with the power of his gibberish. That further underscores his intellectual fragility and emotional instability.

There is no crime called "collusion," but it is the same thing as a criminal conspiracy, which of course is a felony. Trump's admission certainly gives more fuel to Special Counsel Robert Mueller and team charging Trump's son with a felony and naming the President as an indicted co-conspirator.

Trump undoubtedly thought he improved his legal stance with this Twitter rant, although it likely will achieve the exact opposite result. As I've said here before, Trump has repeatedly demonstrated how he's his own worst enemy.

Wholesome

Medical experts in the future will surely study videos over the course of Donald Trump's presidency to analyze what appears to be his increasingly fragile mental state. He continues to hold his ludicrous rallies around the country and, as the one on Thursday night revealed, he seems more unhinged than ever (details here).

If he wasn't such a repulsive individual, you'd almost feel sorry for him. He doesn't seem capable of doing anything except holding rallies like it's still 2016 and he's still running for President.

He trotted out all his old lies about imaginary steel plants that aren't really being built. He also trotted out his Hillary bashing, like he has the power to "lock her up."

What's particularly disgusting is that this pathetic excuse of a rally was actually to boost the candicy of a Republican running for the Senate in Pennsylvania. That candidate stood by happily clapping at Trump's lies and whoppers and un-American babble. Fortunately, recent polls show that candidate is behind his challenger by a double-digit margin.

If Republicans in Congress had any cajones, they would pressure him to stop this shit. But most of them are too weak and the few who do speak out will do nothing more about wring their hands and talk about how it's "troubling" or "unproductive."

Fortunately, polls are showing the Trump's recent behavior is damaging to his support. He's now scoring at his lowest level in truthfulness since becoming President (details here).

That shows more people are disgusted by Trump's behavior than support him. That bodes well for Democrats in this year's midterm elections. But it's still important that everyone of us volunteer and also vote. Complacency helps Trump.

Spectacularly Incompetent

Yesterday, the Washington Post published an intriguing article (link here) about how Donald Trump's attempt to reduce the trade deficit is a whopping disaster. He's determined to get the deficit down, yet it will hit a ten-year high this year.

Notwithstanding he has an undergraduate degree from Wharton, Trump repeatedly demonstrates how he's clueless about macroeconomics. Of course, he endlessly brags about how he never went to class nor bought the required textbooks, as if that makes him some kind of genius. Coincidentally, or not, he also attended university when wealthy students routinely paid graduate students to take their exams and do their papers for them, which might explain why he's clueless about economic basics.

As Americans overall became more prosperous and educated over recent decades, the economy transitioned from a manufacturing-based one to a more service-oriented one. Service economies are now the hallmark of first-world nations, while manufacturing economies are primarily in second and third world countries.

Yet Trump foolishly thinks he can return America to a manufacturing economy. He's trying to achieve this with his ruinous tariffs, which will only make things more expensive for everyone.

He foolishly believes he can achieve the impossible, yet study after study has demonstrated that manufacturing jobs will not come back to any significant degree (details here). If he had any sense, which he doesn't, he'd try to reshape the educational system to train underemployed people for this new economy rather than trying to bring back jobs that mostly will never return.

Trump will fail miserably with his quest, as the numbers already show. Yet all Americans will suffer for it with the higher prices that are coming and, in some products, are already here because of Trump-imposed tariffs and resulting inflation.

The 2018 elections and 2020 elections cannot come soon enough. This incompetent clown needs to be reined in with this year's elections then removed from office in 2020. The Republicans are too gutless to do it, so Democrats must replace them to stabilize the country.

To that end, Slate published a piece yesterday (link here) with a title that says it all: "Trump Now Seems Fine With Letting North Korea Keep Its Nukes."

So Trump achieved a lot of nothing. What was the purpose of meeting with North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-un? The meeting gave Kim legitimacy, something that past Presidents have steadfastly refused to give him. But not "master negotiator" Trump.

Trump seemed to want nothing more than a photo op with him and Kim signing something. His White House has compared it to Richard Nixon in China, which is a complete joke.

Of course, it warrants a mention here that Trump also met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and was completely played then gave what arguably was the most humiliating public appearance by any sitting US President.

And now Trump wants to meet with Iran's president "without preconditions" (details here).

He must want to be rolled again and made to look the international fool once more. He's like the newcomer who keeps losing to card sharks but keeps throwing money on the table because he thinks, with time, he can master the game with his imaginary genius.

The Evidence

The normally sedate New York Review of Books is running a bombshell article in its latest edition by esteemed investigative journalist Murray Waas (link here) that documents how Special Counsel Robert Mueller now has conclusive proof Donald Trump committed the serious crime of obstruction of justice.

Waas writes: "A confidential White House memorandum, which is in the special counsel’s possession, explicitly states that when Trump pressured Comey he had just been told by two of his top aides -- his then chief of staff Reince Priebus and his White House counsel Don McGahn -- that Flynn was under criminal investigation." He's referring here to James Comey, former FBI director, and Michael Flynn, Trump's former National Security Advisor.

Knowing Flynn was the subject of a criminal investigation, Trump tried to pressure Comey into ending it.

That is obstruction of justice, pure and simple.

Again per Waas: "It is now all but inevitable that the special counsel will complete a confidential report presenting evidence that Trump violated the law. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the special counsel’s work, would then decide on turning over that report to Congress for the House of Representatives to consider whether to instigate impeachment proceedings."

This is why it's so critical that the House flips to Democratic control with this year's November elections. The House can impeach with a simple majority vote.

Impeachment would then bring a public and televised trial and everything would come to light. The American public could then pressure the Senate -- including many Republican Senators -- to remove Trump from office.

Republicans were willing to remove Nixon in 1974. Hopefully they will once again put country before party.

Proving once again that Donald Trump's repeated claims to be "for the little guy" are giant festering lies, his administration is now considering a $100 billion tax cut that would go mainly to the wealthy (details here). Because of legal reasons, the action would be considered unilateral and thus not require congressional approval.

This is officially insane. Trump and his Republican enablers recently passed a tax cut that primarily benefitted the wealthy, with more than 90 percent of the tax cuts going only to the highest earners. That is now adding to the national debt and the deficit at a record date.

But now Trump wants another unfunded tax cut, this one even more skewed to the rich. The national debt would grow even higher at a faster and faster rate.

And, yes, this tax cut would be a huge windfall for Trump himself because it would change how capital gains on real estate transactions are calculated.

This is offically insane. Trump cares not a whit for the little guy. He wants to saddle that little guy with an even larger national debt while handing himself a huge tax cut.

The Trial

The first criminal trial of Donald Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort starts today in Virginia, barring any last minute developments. Trump is only the second President in U.S. history to see his campaign chairman face a criminal trial, with the first being Richard Nixon. Nixon's was convicted and served prison time.

The New York Times published a good analysis of the trial (link here), as did the Associated Press (link here) and NPR (link here). Reuters published a handy overview of the criminal charges themselves (link here).

Trump has repeatedly said the charges relate to things that happened "many years before" Manafort became his campaign chairman. That is a lie. The most serious charges he faces in this trial relate to alleged crimes that occurred in part while he was campaign chairman.

When campaigning, Trump repeatedly said he would hire "the best people," boasting he could attract talent far superior to any prior President. When he was saying this, one of those "best people" was working for him and potentially committing serious financial crimes.

The reality is that Trump has a knack for picking bottomfeeders. Manafort has been a bottomfeeder for years, working for dictators and shady oligarchs before becoming Trump's campaign chairman. The Washington Post released a great twenty-minute video this week titled "The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Paul Manafort" that provides a good portrait of the man (link here).

Heading into court, Manafort's chances to escape prison are not good. Recent statistics show federal prosecutors secure convictions in 97 percent of cases that go to trial.

And this will not be Manafort's only criminal trial this year. He faces another one in less than two months in Washington. His odds in that one are said by legal experts to be even longer.

Of course, one reason today's trial may not happen has nothing to do with court delays or procedure. His trial would be delayed if he decided to flip and testify against Trump himself. That would be a glorious last-minute development.

The linked piece in question deals with a smaller aid function of the U.S. government with 300 employees and an $800 million annual budget. Previously, most of the appointed positions were filled with highly technical people who had a specific expertise in funding underdeveloped countries.

No more. The experts were sent packing and replaced with Trump loyalists being rewarded with high-paying government jobs, like a 2016 college graduate with utterly no international aid experience and a former Congressional intern who graduate from college in 2018 and also has no international aid experience.

This travesty once again demonstrates how what Trump promised and what he delivered are two entirely different things. His promises were lies. And the reality is he's doing the opposite of what he promised to do.

Of course his supporters will never know this, but they can't be counted on to reverse their stance in the 2018 and 2020 elections. However this kind of crap needs to be brought to the attention of independent voters before these two important elections so that they can see the results are nothing like what everyone was told to expect.

The Week's Biggest Development

Arguably the biggest development of last week was the revelation that Donald Trump's longtime financial manager Allen Weisselberg has been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who leads the criminal investigation into the President and his circle (details here).

This is major news because, as the linked article notes, "the fact that there was reason to subpoena him is big. That means he has to answer investigators' questions, save for ones where he might invoke the Fifth Amendment. It also means the probe has clearly expanded into Trump's business, which constituted Trump's previously expressed red line."

The business is where Trump may be the most vulnerable, particularly if he was involved in money laundering, which has long been widely believed.

The piece then quotes a former Justice Department official: "The subpoena is significant because it indicates that the probe encompasses the welter of transactions done under the umbrella of the Trump Organization, with possible criminal liability for the organization itself. Moreover, it means investigation into possible abuse of the organizational structure to serve Trump’s personal purposes."

The official continues: "If he was truly the guy people like Cohen sought to execute shady dealings like setting up companies for payments to cover up alleged affairs, just think of what he might know. You can bet Trump is."

This a development definitely to be watched. Stay tuned.
