Given that Trump's ideas about trade and tariffs are often profoundly wrong and steeped in his economic ignorance, proving that he learned next to nothing at Wharton, the entire country and even the world are held hostage by his whims.
This paragraph from the linked article gives you an idea of how capricious Trump's decision making process is: "The current crisis began on Thursday, when Trump--ignoring warnings from his top advisers--suddenly announced that his Administration would levy tariffs on an additional three hundred billion dollars’ worth of Chinese goods, beginning September 1st. After meeting in June with Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, Trump agreed not to take this step, and talks between the two sides resumed. But the President changed his mind after Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. Trade Representative, and Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, returned from talks in Shanghai without securing the concessions that Trump had been demanding, including an immediate agreement by China to boost its imports of U.S. agricultural products."

Trump's racism has always been in plain sight. His chronic demonization of the Central Park Five, for instance, along with his claims that President Obama was not born in the United States are two of many examples of his embrace of racism.
His presidential campaign regularly featured racist rhetoric. His characterization of Mexican immigrants as a class of rapists was the worst example of many.
His presidency itself has repeatedly stooped to racist rhetoric, the rate of which is accelerating. Some of his supporters encourage this because they share his racism. Others make excuses for him, insisting he's not racist, conveniently failing to notice what's in plain sight.
Trump's re-election campaign is steeped in racism. It's one of the central themes. He has so little actual successes he can run on, so he instead appears determined to motivate every adult racist in the country to turn out to vote for him.

Slow-Motion Disaster
Foreign Policy magazine published an excellent piece last week (link here) about how Donald Trump's trade policy and resulting trade wars have been an unmitigated disaster.
The deck to the article should give you a good idea of the thesis: "The Trump administration’s obsession with trade threats, tariffs, and bullying both allies and rivals into submission was based on an ambitious theory. It turned out to be a fallacy."
Major economies are big, complex entities. Trying to tinker with them on the fly, as Trump has done, is a recipe for disaster. Change must be careful and incremental. Trump's solution is nihilistic -- shove everything on the floor and see what happens.
His "solution" to slap tariffs on all imports from China is nothing short of moronic. Tariffs are used, if at all, to protect domestic industries, but when the US lacks many industries that China has, tariffs will end up being a very painful and expensive tax.
I suspect more Americans are not paying attention to this slow-motion disaster in the making because the severe pain that comes with tariffs has not yet been felt. The big China tariffs kick into place at the end of this month. Look for prices to spike after that.
One could be reassured in thinking this problem will go away once Trump leaves office in, hopefully, a little more than a year. But the reality is that aftershocks from this may last a decade or more.

Dark Clouds
Amazon is the country's largest provider of cloud computing services with many companies and organizations using their services. So it's no surprise that the Pentagon would entertain a bid from them for $10 billion in cloud computing services.
Until Donald Trump stepped in to quash the deal. His attempt had nothing to do with the quality of their service or their price, which was the lowest of the various providers who bid on the Pentagon contract.
Trump reacted as he did because Amazon is partly owned by the same man who owns the Washington Post, one of the country's pre-eminent media outlets that has repeatedly documented his extensive corruption and staggering incompetence (details here and here).
The bottom line, because of his extremely fragile ego, Trump put self and spite before national security.
If he's able to derail the deal, taxpayers will end up paying more for a potentially inferior contract. And the Washington Post will continue to report on Trump's corruption and incompetence.
Hopefully the House of Representatives will look into this. Because the Senate, which is full of Trump's handmaiden hostages and controlled by the GOP, will do nothing.

On Thursday night, the New York Times broke the story (links here and here) that the Manhattan district attorney had subpoenaed Donald Trump's company to determine if any state laws had been broken in the hush money scandal where porn stars were paid large sums of money to keep quiet about the President's adulterous affairs with them.
New York state law makes it a crime to falsify business records, which may have occurred in covering up the purpose of the payments, meaning that company officials could be charged with a crime if they directed this to happen.
Including Trump himself.
The good news about this is that if Trump is charged, he cannot pardon himself out of the pickle. A President's constitutional pardoning powers only apply to federal charges.
The unanswered question here is whether the state could put Trump on trial in criminal court while he's still President. That's a legal situation which has never occurred before and is thus legally uncharted waters.
Nevertheless, it's telling that Trump may end up going down in history as the first President charged with a crime while in office. That's a legacy he would carry forever.

Vanished
Remember how Donald Trump's tax cuts, which went primarily to the very wealthy, were supposed to stimulate the economy permanently? Well that turned out to be another lie.
Yesterday, the Tax Policy Center released a report (link here) that showed the cuts only boosted the economy for about a half a year before they started running out of steam in the middle of last year. Economic growth then fell to normal levels in the middle of last year.
In the most recent three month period, economic growth was actually below the ten year average, further proof that any benefits from the tax giveaway to the rich have vanished. Indeed, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates this week out of fears the economy was now stalling.
The downside to all this is that the pain hasn't set in yet -- those tax cuts will have to be paid for, because the economy didn't grow as promised and tax revenues are down. The result is that both the deficit and national debt are increasing.
The bottom line is that the six-month short-lived benefit from the tax cut will have to be paid for by future generations over many decades. And when the economy does run into trouble again, as it always does, the country's borrowing power will already be severely impaired, thanks to Trump's needless and expensive cuts that only truly benefited the very wealthy.

I realized yesterday that the Snowball Idiots in America's Congress have been strangely silent this summer. The Snowball Idiots are those fools who claim climate change is a hoax and refuse to spend any public funds fighting it and refuse to allow businesses to be required to address it.
They earned their name after one of their number, Senator James Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, brought a snowball into the Senate chamber in February to "prove" that climate change did not exist. Their scientific deduction was that, if you could go outside in February on any random day and find some snow, then climate change was a hoax.

A Strategy?
Donald Trump's chief enabler, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, is normally impervious to criticism and has even used it at times as a fundraising strategy. But as the New York Times reported yesterday (link here), he's become enraged that people are calling him "Moscow Mitch" for blocking new election security legislation that would thwart Russia from meddling in the 2020 election.
He's not reacting this way because his normally tough hide has suddenly become vulnerable. I'd argue it's because he realizes it's a major liability for him in 2020 as he heads into his re-election campaign. Being labeled soft on Russia is hard to defend in red state America.
So perhaps Democrats as a whole need to use this as a cudgel against other Republicans who refuse to advance election security measures. Give them a taste of Trump's nicknaming medicine a.

Both Saudi Arabia and Russia are relentlessly anti-democratic. Dissent is punished as are LGBT residents. And sometimes people are even killed. It's telling that Trump has aligned himself with people like this.
It's likely, at the heart of this, Trump owes considerable sums to both Russian and Saudi lenders, to the tune of hundreds of millions. Why else is he fighting to hide his tax returns, which could reveal this. So he'll suck up to Russia and the Saudis, no matter what they do to people and how much they work against the interest of the United States.
This is one of the many reasons why Trump must be defeated in the election that's fifteen months away.

And the President need not look far for the cause of rodents in the congressman's hometown: Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner owns thousands of substandard apartment units in the congressman's district, including those that have been repeatedly cited for rodent infestations (details here and here).
