Too Late?

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright wrote an excellent op-ed for the New York Times over the weekend (link here) with the title "Will We Stop Trump Before It’s Too Late?" and the subtitle "Fascism poses a more serious threat now than at any time since the end of World War II."

Donald Trump would never call himself a fascist but he has advocated many positions popular with postwar neo-fascism: ultranationalism, populism, anti-immigration absolutism, and anti-democratic authoritarianism.

Albright writes: "Overseas, rather than stand up to bullies, Trump appears to like bullies, and they are delighted to have him represent the American brand. If one were to draft a script chronicling fascism’s resurrection, the abdication of America’s moral leadership would make a credible first scene."

When Trump trashes a close ally like Germany and Great Britain whilst praising authoritarian regimes in places like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the Philippines, Trump sounds more like one of America's adversaries, not its head of state.

Albright has had a front-row seat to fascism in her life. When she was a child, she grew up in Nazi-occupied Prague. As a professor of diplomacy and a seasoned world statesman, who many times has witnessed what results from flourishing freedom and oppressive neo-fascism.

I don't think there's any danger Trump would turn the United States into a neo-fascistic country. What does seem like a real danger, as Albright warns, is that Trump could inspire other authoritarian heads of state to embrace neo-fascism and his behavior offers a tacit approval.

That is a disgraceful sullying of the American promise. The country runs a real danger of no longer being a beacon for the rest of the world, and the United States would be diminished as a result.

The Hill published a short article yesterday (link here) that zeroes in on a particular portion of a much longer Washington Post piece that revealed how Trump callously demanded to know why a drone was not fired directly at a target's house with his family inside instead of waiting until the target was outside and away from his next of kin, which was ultimately done.

The Post explained: "When the agency’s head of drone operations explained that the CIA had developed special munitions to limit civilian casualties, the President seemed unimpressed."

Wow. But then why are we surprised?

On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to go after both terrorists and their families, no matter if innocent young children were killed. "You have to take out their families."

That, of course, was something that Adolph Hitler's minions did. And deliberately targeting innocent civilians violates both international law and the Geneva Convention.

Trump stupidly does not realize this sort of heartless rhetoric is exactly what terrorist organizations like ISIS and Al-Qaeda use in recruitment materials to portray how the West is waging a crusade on Islam. With every innocent civilian who is killed, one or several new terrorists are created.

The Net Widens

Last night, McClatchy News Service broke the story (link here) that Robert Mueller, who leads the criminal investigation into the President and his associates, has widened his group's focus on some of Donald Trump's partners and also his lawyer.

As the article notes, "the move to question business associates of the President adds a significant new element to the Mueller investigation." And there's a lot of deals to investigate, and quite a lot of them are dodgy at best.

In particular, questions about whether Trump and his business associates knowingly worked as a front for money laundering. I've written about Trump and the extensive money-laundering accusations in previous entries where I linked to published articles about the allegations (see, for instance, here, here, here, here, and here).

Trump's indicted National Security Advisor has been staying out of public spotlight since word leaked that he is now cooperating with Mueller's investigation. At the same time, the McClatchy scoop suggests this may the answer as to how exactly Mueller plans to use Flynn's cooperation.

Trump's former right-hand advisor Steve Bannon has said more than once in public since he left the White House that he saw a great deal of questionable business practices from inside the campaign, including the possibility of money laundering. As another former insider with just as much access as Bannon, Flynn may know where to find the smoking guns.

This McClatchy scoop is yet another important development to watch -- often nebulous leaks like this have come into focus with time as more about Mueller's criminal investigation becomes public knowledge. Stay tuned.

The Oligarchs

Late yesterday afternoon, CNN broke the startling story (link here) that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who leads the criminal investigation into the President and his associates, has been questioning Russian oligarchs about their potential contacts with Donald Trump and his campaign in 2016 and before.

Mueller’s team is reportedly questioning whether Russian oligarchs illegally sent cash donations to Trump’s campaign or inauguration. In at least one instance, an oligarch was stopped upon entry to the United States and his electronic devices were searched.

While donations to Trump's campaign are reported to the Federal Election Commission and can be scrutinized by the public to some degree, no independent accounting has ever been made of the inauguration fundraising, which pulled in more than $107 million, an all-time record. Although Trump himself promised repeatedly that leftover inauguration funds would be donated and also to release a public accounting, no such information has actually ever been made available (details here).

CNN's reporting indicates that "Mueller’s team has intensified its focus into the potential flow of money from Russia into the US election." Any such foreign cash given to Trump's campaign, of course, would be illegal.

Reporting by Mother Jones last year revealed that "the head of the American subsidiary of a Russian conglomerate owned by a Russian oligarch with close ties to President Vladimir Putin made a huge donation" to the inaugural fund (details here).

It's curious how Trump repeatedly claims he has nothing to do with Russians yet more and more Russians are revealed from his past and present.

This revelations about the oligarchs being questioned strongly suggests Mueller's team knew a good bit before they were questioned. Federal investigators don't engage in fishing expeditions -- they ask questions when they know connections already exist.

This is a development that certainly bears watching for more news updates. Stay tuned.

Pillage and Burn

The New Yorker published an excellent, deeply researched article this week (link here) profiling Donald Trump's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, Scott Pruitt. The headline reads "Scott Pruitt's Dirty Politics" and the subhead is "How the Environmental Protection Agency became the fossil-fuel industry’s best friend."

The piece makes clear the great danger of conservative zealots like Pruitt who, in keeping with Trump administration policy, literally destroy government departments and agencies within. Protecting the environment and the American people are no longer the goal at the EPA under Pruitt.

Instead, his goal is the total moral corruption and wholesale dismantling of the agency entirely to serve his oligarch masters. His entire political career has been lavishly funded by the likes of dirty industry and the Koch brothers who care not one whit about pollution.

The feckless Trump is entirely disinterested in the institutional destruction at the EPA, as long as it satisfies the heavy polluters who are partly underwriting his re-election campaign. He cares nothing about America's great resources nor the rule of law -- he's simply interested in how much money he and his cohorts can make while sullying the country and the constitution.

The article is a sobering, disturbing read but absolutely essential if you care about America's resources, health, and future.

The Iceberg

The Wall Street Journal broke two important stories yesterday, both about Special Counsel Robert Mueller's criminal investigation into Donald Trump and his associates.

In the first article (link here), the Journal revealed that Mueller is investigating possibly unlawful activity involving the Trump administration in its dealings with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a federation of seven Emirati monarchies on the Saudi peninsula. The UAE has been heavily lobbying the Trump White House to take its side in a regional dispute against Qatar.

Trump has been oddly effusive about the UAE in public comments and has gone out of his way to disparage Qatar, notwithstanding the latter had always been a strong American ally and also the location of a critical important American military base. Numerous media outlets have reported in recent months that the White House turned against Qater after the country's sovereign fund declined to finance business projects of Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law. Various news reports have stated Kushner directly solicited the Qatar loans from inside the West Wing.

While the Journal report notes that the exact nature of Mueller's UAE inquiry is not known at this time. The piece nonetheless reveals that Mueller is leaving no stone unturned in his investigation.

The second article (link here) details how Mueller is investigating whether longtime Trump confidante Roger Stone acted as a cutout between the Trump campaign and Wikileaks, which in turn may have been a cutout between Stone and the Kremlin.

Mueller is widely believed to be investigating whether the Trump campaign -- and Trump himself -- coordinated in any way with the Kremlin or other Russian entities to release hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign. Any such coordination potentially could be prosecuted as felonies.

Reading articles like this, one comes away with the sense that we in the public only have a tiny glimpse of what lies beneath the surface of the Mueller investigation. It's like an iceberg, where most of the mass and all of the danger lies beneath the surface.

And that iceberg may be on a collision course with the President, his family, and his associates.

The Island of Misfit Toys

Yesterday, Axios published a short compilation article (link here) about how, instead of consulting world-class experts on the nation's problems like all recent modern Presidents, Donald Trump's inner circle is made up of media clowns, charlatans, and crackpots.

Trump has long been known as gathering yes-men and sycophants around him who will keep reinforcing his own self-destructive tendencies as opposed to people who who tell him what he should hear, even if it is painful. This is a behavior commonly scene in third-world despots, not American Presidents.

The President has also done this with his own staff. Chief of Staff John Kelly is widely seen as a moderating force in the White House, but Trump has marginalized him and is reportedly trying to ease him out the door.

Trump did the same with his National Security Advisor, H. R. McMaster, another moderating voice who was pushed into resigning and will be gone next week. He will be replaced by the inflammatory John Bolton who is widely known to be another Trump coddler who caters to the President's worst instincts.

Searching for historical models for this disastrous style of executive management in the White House are not difficult. Both George W. Bush and Richard Nixon were notorious for surrounding themselves with ego-fluffers who simply parroted back what their Presidents said to them whilst shielding them from the truth as a result.

It's no surprise then that Trump, the younger Bush, and Nixon are all ranked by historians as three of the worst Presidents in history. There is every sign that Trump will continue to double-down in this self-destructive tendency, but unfortunately the American people and the nation will suffer as a result.

Woefully Unqualified

This past week, Donald Trump fired David Shulkin, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The latter promptly fired off a biting editorial that appeared in the New York Times (link here) and revealed the real reason for the President's action: Shulkin refused to go along with the administration's attempt to privatize veterans' healthcare, a move that would increase costs for taxpayers, worsen medical care for vets, and line the pockets of big-money GOP donors.

Shortly after Shulkin was pushed out, Trump nominated his personal White House physician to fill the Secretary of Veterans Affairs slot, an announcement which shocked Washington because the doctor, who might have excellent medical skills, has utterly no administrative experience. As the second-largest government agency with more than 360,000 employees, Veterans Affairs requires a skilled medical executive.

The Washington Post reported (link here) that the White House never even consulted Republican Senators about the potential nomination, which is standard proceedure any time a cabinet seat needs filling. As well, the nominee wasn't even vetted inside the White House, another standard and necessary procedure that was discarded.

The real reason for Trump's enthusiasm for his unqualified nominee is obvious: the President's personal physician flattered the President by giving him a glowing medical report. In that, he conveniently overlooked mentioning that the President was obviously obese and had lied about both his weight and height to hide that fact.

This will not end well.
