Cowardly

Late Friday night, only hours after Republican Senators refused to allow any witnesses or new evidence in Donald Trump's impeachment trial, the White House admitted in a court filing in a different case that it was withholding release of two dozen emails "that reveal the President’s thinking about withholding military aid to Ukraine" (details here or here).

Of course, Senate Republicans aren't interested in finding out the truth about Trump's intention. They're only interested in covering up as much as possible anything that might establish his guilt.

In doing so, however, they have completely upended more than two hundred years of precedent regarding the balance of power between Congress and the presidency. They have deliberately surrendered without a fight in an action that will go far beyond Trump.

That's the biggest surprise to this whole impeachment experience — how cowardly Congressional Republicans really are.

Almost certainly, this will not end well for them.
