The Coming Chaos

Rick Hasen is an election law expert and law professor whose new book went on sale yesterday. It's called Election Meltdown — Dirty Tricks, Distrust, and the Threat to American Democracy.

In interviews to accompany the book's release, Hasen makes no secret about the fact that he believes Donald Trump is a threat to America and to democracy. He was superb on NPR's Fresh Air last week, which will be available for a free download indefinitely as a podcast (link here).

Hasen also published an excellent piece yesterday at Salon (link here) that examines how Trump may try to declare himself the winner this November regardless of the actual outcome.

His piece makes a powerful statement. He writes: "Trump may not leave office quietly in the event he's on the losing end of a very close election. And unfortunately this possibility is only one of a number of potential election meltdowns we may face in November."

Hasen then goes on to describe various scenarios where Trump would lose both the popular vote and the Electoral College but still try to claim he was the winner as well as other election horrors.

I don't think this is just fearmongering. Trump lied outrageously after the 2016 election when he declared he was the popular vote winner and was cheated by three million illegal votes. There was utterly no factual basis for such a claim. He will try the same in 2020.

The only way we can counter this is to defeat Trump overwhelmingly. If he loses the election by ten million votes and is nowhere near close in the Electoral College, his stance would be so much weaker. Sure, his zealots would believe he was cheated even if he lost in a landslide, but the vast majority will not be fooled.

You can make sure this happens by committing now to vote against Trump this November and also by volunteering and donating to a candidate who can defeat him soundly.
