Last week I wrote about Donald Trump's deeply stupid proposed tariffs on Mexican goods (link here). In the last few days, Trump has "solved" this crisis he created with a "solution" that was already in the works months ago.

To this end, the New York Times published an excellent piece yesterday (link here) with the title "A Drama of Trump’s Own Making Ends With a Familiar Hero." Guess who the hero is.

Per the article: "Nine days in spring offered a case study in ... Trump’s approach to some of the most daunting issues confronting him and the nation: When the goal seems frustratingly out of reach through traditional means, threaten drastic action, set a deadline, demand concessions, cut a deal — real or imagined — avert the dire outcome and declare victory."

And continuing: "If nothing else, he forces attention on the issue at hand. Whether the approach yields sustainable results seem less certain. These are often dramas of his own making, with him naturally the hero. He stakes out maximalist positions and issues brutal ultimatums to compel action, arguing that extreme problems demand extreme tactics. At times, though, it can seem like little more than smoke and mirrors substituting for serious policymaking, a way of pretending to make progress without actually solving the underlying problem."

Further in the article, a former high-level government official on the National Security Council staff is quoted as saying: "The president manufactures a crisis, galvanizes his base around the challenge, leaves the definition of success undefined, pretends to play hardball and, lo and behold, finds a solution that entails little more than window-dressing, if that.... The loser tends to be the American people, oftentimes Trump’s base first and foremost."

Teddy Roosevelt famously said an effective leader should "speak softly and carry a big stick." For Trump, the opposite approach is true: "speak loudly and boastfully and incessantly but give away the stick."

Outraged

During a recent meeting with the Democratic leadership, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi quipped that she wanted to see Donald Trump in prison.

That has now brought howls of outrage from the White House and Trump's media loyalists. For instance, Trump loyalist Sean Hannity was beside himself with outraged when he wailed "Speaker Pelosi now apparently telling senior Democrats that she’d like to see Trump behind bars... She wants a political opponent locked up in prison? That happens in banana republics -- beyond despicable behavior. And by the way, they would literally turn, in many ways, the USA into a country we no longer recognize" (source here).

Now that's curious. This, of course, is the same Sean Hannity who during the 2016 presidential campaign and afterwards gleefully called for imprisonment for Hillary Clinton, notwithstanding she had been charged with no crimes. For instance, last year, he said "I think Hillary should be in jail. Lock her up. Lock her up" (source here).

Hannity, of course, was not alone in bellowing about how Secretary Clinton should be locked up. Anyone who watched footage of the Republican National Convention in 2016 will remember GOP luminaries on stage leading chants of "lock her up" when Clinton was discussed.

One of those cheerleaders was Mike Flynn, Trump's senior campaign aide and later National Security Adviser. Flynn has now pleaded guilty to federal charges and will likely end up in prison.

And at Trump's 2019 campaign rallies, just like those in 2017 and 2018, the audience regularly is led in "lock her up" chants when, for whatever reason, even though she's not running for anything, her name is dangled before the crowd.

One common characteristic of bullies is that they can dish it out but they can't take it. That certainly seems to apply to Trump and Hannity and anyone else who clutched pearls this week at Speaker Pelosi's quip.

No Flags for You

Early in Donald Trump's administration, I devoted more than a few entries on this blog to documenting how his promise to be pro-LGBT was a giant lie. Many media outlets have done the same (example here). Trump has been resoundingly anti-LGBT.

This week we saw yet another example. The Trump Administration has prohibited American embassies around the world from flying the rainbow pride flag below the American flag during Pride Month (details here).

During President Obama's administration, embassies were given blanket permission to fly rainbow flags below the American flags on official flagpoles.

Why the change? Why do we even ask? Trump lied to LGBT Americans just like he incessantly lies to every American. Fortunately, most Americans now know he's a habitual liar who can never be trusted.

Private Lessons

Not Yet Ready

Donald Trump's possible impeachment and subsequent Senate hearing is a very hot topic in Washington and across America right now. Many are in favor of Trump's impeachment -- which is akin to an indictment -- but more are not, based on public opinion polls.

Nonetheless, those in favor of impeachment have been asking House Democrats to get the ball rolling. To this end, the Los Angeles Times published a piece yesterday (link here) with the title "House Democrats don’t have a majority for impeachment, but support is growing."

Likely a lot of them are listening to public attitudes and watching opinion surveys. They also likely don't want to appear like they're trying to impeach to score political points and instead of appearing like they're acting because of criminal President.

I can't say I disagree with this attitude. It's better to be ready and not go, than to go and not be ready.

Some of this lack of enthusiasm can also be linked to the fact that Democrats presume the Senate will not vote to remove Trump, so the whole endeavor would be for naught.

To this end, the distinguished legal scholar Laurence Tribe wrote a thought-provoking piece for the Washington Post yesterday (link here) with the title of "Impeach Trump. But don’t necessarily try him in the Senate."

He makes some interesting points. The House could score both political points and also seriously wound Trump, thus rendering him much more powerless, without the matter ever going to the Senate.

An innovative solution like this might be the best course moving forward. Hopefully, enough Democrats on the House side will see this piece so that it stimulates their creative juices.

Under Fire

A county district attorney in Tennessee finds himself in the hot seat because he's been caught on tape saying he would not enforce domestic violence laws when a same-sex couple is involved (details here and here).

"To deal with that, you elect a good Christian man as DA, and you’ll make sure at least they don’t get prosecuted criminally," he was recorded saying. In his twisted logic, he wrongly claims "the reason that there's enhanced punishment on domestic violence is to recognize and protect the sanctity of marriage," but because same-sex couples can't be married, even though the Supreme Court says they can, he'll just ignore any domestic violence complaints.

He conveniently ignores the fact that domestic violence law in Tennessee also protects unmarried, cohabitating couples in both straight and same-sex relationships.

The DA in question has also made hateful comments about Muslims and compared them to KKK members. He has repeatedly brushed off calls for his resignation and, at a minimum, an apology.

The man is total scum.

Unsurprisingly Sleazy

On Monday, the New York Times broke the story (paywall-free link here) that Donald Trump's former business partner in Panama is now accusing him of cheating on his taxes in that country.

This revelation could lead to a diplomatic incident because the accusation holds that the President of the United States defrauded a foreign government.

The fact that Trump may have cheated someone should come as no surprise. He has a long, long history of dunning people for payment, and then when they attempt to collect in court, he counter-sues for far greater of a sum for all sorts of dubious claims. In order to avoid the escalating legal costs, many of his creditors simply walk away in frustration.

However, in this instance, with a foreign government involved, this tactic may not work.

The tax payments aside, this situation once again demonstrates how when faced with a choice, Trump will always take the lowest road and totally ignore the ethical issue of paying one's debts. The United States certainly doesn't need someone without a moral compass sitting in the Oval Office.

Disgusting

On Friday, CNN published an extremely disturbing report (link here) about the absolutely appalling conditions under which new migrants are being housed at the southern border.

It's important to remember that many, if not most, of these people are legal arrivals because they came as refugees seeking asylum.

In one facility, 900 people were crammed into a space with a maximum capacity of 125. People had to stand on toilets in order to breathe.

Notwithstanding that Donald Trump has demonized these people, he and his administration have the responsibility to house them safely and humanely. But right now, they sound like prisoners in some third-world detention camp. Trump and his people must wear the mantle of shame for the inhumanely treatment they now face.

An effective leader thinking outside the box could come up with quick and workable solutions for a problem like this. But Trump is doing nothing, instead wasting time playing golf and watching endless hours of daytime television. What a disgrace.

By the Numbers

At the time of Donald Trump's tax cut passage last year, which went primarily to the wealthy, many economists predicted they would have little to no economic benefit. As it turns out, according to the Congressional Research Service, those predictions were correct (details here and here).

"The CRS finds that the cuts have had virtually no effect on wages, haven’t contributed to a surge in investment, and haven’t come close to paying for themselves," per one article describing the report. "Nor have they delivered a cut to the average taxpayer."

And now with Trump madly increasing tariffs on imports from China and Mexico, where a considerable percentage of imported goods and food originate, ordinary Americans are facing the equivalent of the largest tax increase in more than thirty years (details here and here).

Whatever gains the tax cut brought to ordinary Americans, they will be wiped out and then some by the de facto tax increase brought on by tariffs.

Trump may have a business degree but he clearly doesn't understand basic economics and finance.

On Thursday, during a spontaneous press availability, Donald Trump lost his shit when asked about the Mueller Report and Robert Mueller's insistence that he could not state the President was innocent. He then declared that some of Mueller's staff were "the worst people in the world."

A few minutes later, when asked about North Korea's brutal dictator Kim Jong Un, Trump gushed "he’s got a great personality." This is certainly not the first time he got all weak at the knees about Kim, who he falsely and repeatedly claims is disarming his country's nukes when in fact he's ramping up production.

In October last year, Trump dreamily declared about Kim that "we fell in love.... He wrote me beautiful letters." In February of this year, Trump said "he’s real smart. He’s sharp as you can be. He’s a real leader."

Then came the news out of Korea this week that Kim ordered executions for five of his senior officials, including one who had participated in denuclearization meetings with Trump. Kim also ordered life sentences at hard labor for two other officials who had traveled to the White House to discuss denuclearization.

Trump has remained utterly silent about these developments.

Deeply Stupid

Yesterday, Donald Trump threatened to slap a tariff on all goods entering from Mexico into the United States in retaliation for unauthorized immigration across the southern border (details here) in a move that brought sharp criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike on Capitol Hill.

That prompted Catherine Rampell at the Washington Post to pen a harshly critical piece (link around paywall here) with the blunt title of "Just a few of the reasons that Trump’s Mexico tariffs are deeply stupid."

What is particularly stupid about this is the fact that Trump wants to punish Mexico for something Trump has failed to do himself.

In short, there is nothing good that would come out of these tariffs and plenty of bad things. They would be a direct tax on consumers who would see an immediate spike in prices, particularly for food items and fresh produce.

It also weakens the United States's stance in Europe and Asia which also currently are tied up in trade wars because it makes us look untrustworthy at the bargaining table.
