A Major Victory

Yesterday, a federal appeals court ruled that the Civil Rights Act protects LGBT workers and thus prohibits employers from discriminating against them because of their sexual orientation (details here).

This was a major setback for the Trump administration, which had unexpectedly stepped into the ongoing appeal and argued that LGBT workers were not protected against employment discrimination. Hey, remember when candidate Donald Trump promised he'd stand up for LGBT rights -- yeah, that was a massive lie (details here).

With this court decision, two federal appellate courts have now ruled the Civil Rights Act protects LGBT workers, while a third appellate court ruled the other way. When multiple federal appellate courts have disagreed like this on other cases, the Supreme Court has been more motivated to take such a matter on appeal.

If the high court does take this or a similar appeal, sooner rather than later would be better, before Trump has a chance to nominate any more Supreme Court justices. Right now, the court is balanced five-to-four in favor of LGBT rights. A new nominee, however, could upset that balance.

So for the time being, very good news, but this is an issue that warrants continued attention. Stay tuned.

  1. Each time I read such news about LGBT rights in USA, I'm flabbergasted how religion and bigotry in your country are going against LGBT to live a normal life in our modern world.

Something we no more see in Canada since the 60's and more since 1982 when Trudeau introduced our «Canadian Chart of Rights and Liberty».

In Canada, NEVER a working place could refuse a worker for his religion, race or sexual orientation.
I'm a high school teacher and I was even protected by my school board if I would ever have an issue in regard of being gay. More, I was teaching in a high school for the last 8 years before retiring and we were 3 lesbians and 4 gay guys and we were very much respected too.
One of the gay male teacher was each year bringing a LGBT young group called GRIS (in French) to exchange ideas with the students during the gay week in our school.

LGBT people here are part of all workers groups and it's just a normal thing in Montreal and all over the country too. It's even well regarded if you have LGBT friend(s) and co workers as much as any other race of religion people.

USA have to get rid of the religion and bigots that are like cancer in the middle of your politics and politicians.
It's so non sense in a society that is praising the Lord and so Christian to HATE people that are different and even more unbelievable to stick to the second amendement even when so many nice young people are killed by mass destruction riffles as AR-15 and AK-47.

    USA's society is sick.
