Day One

Yesterday was the first day of the House's open hearing on the question of impeaching Donald Trump. Scores of media outlets reported all day and last night about the proceedings.

I think the best coverage I've read of the most important highlights were published by the Washington Post (link here), the New York Times (link here), and the political news journal Talking Points Memo (link here).

The most damning moment yesterday came when the current ambassador to Ukraine — whom the President appointed — revealed that Trump had called at least one diplomat to inquire how the pressure campaign on Ukraine to open investigations into his political rivals was proceeding.

This underscores how Trump was fully invested in bending American foreign policy for his own personal benefit and cuts the legs out from under the Republican defense that Trump was not involved in the pressure campaign.

While not as dramatic a smoking gun as the one that brought down Richard Nixon, it nonetheless was a smoking gun that has now badly wounded Trump.

We will be hearing more about this revelation tomorrow in Day Two of open hearings when a direct witness to Trump's previously unknown phone call will testify. Stay tuned.
