Why It Could Happen

I would be the first to admit that the chances the U.S. Senate convicts and removes Donald Trump from office once he's impeached are not high.

But they're not impossible, either.

Jonathan Bernstein at Bloomberg published an excellent piece on just this topic yesterday (link here or here). The title is "Don’t Buy the Conventional Wisdom on Impeachment."

The reason acquittal is not a foregone conclusion is that there are still too many unknowns. As Bernstein's piece notes, support for Nixon was strong until suddenly it wasn't. The same could happen for Trump.

That arguably needs a bombshell catalyst for it to happen and Trump's Ukraine scandal is still a developing story with many known unknowns and unknown unknowns. What, for instance, is on the tapes Trump associate Lev Parnas turned over to the House Intelligence Committee?

If this was a baseball game, we're still in an early inning. The rest of the event may play out like the early inning.

Then again, it might not. Stay tuned.
