Implosion in Progress

Jerry Falwell Jr. arguably is the country's most powerful homophobe. He also was an early endorser of Donald Trump and definitely helped him win evangelical votes. Falwell remains extremely close to Trump.

Falwell has been in the news recently for a number of scandals. One involved an attractive young poolboy whom Falwell gave millions to invest. The poolboy and Falwell and/or his wife apparently were subjects in some racy photos that Trump's one-time lawyer Michael Cohen made disappear, part of the reason Falwell may have endorsed Trump.

Another scandal involved an attractive young man who is Falwell's personal trainer and the recipient of millions from Falwell for investments. If you're a muscular, attractive young man looking for investors, you'd be catnip for Jerry Jr.

On Monday, Politico magazine published a detailed, deeply reported article (link here) about Falwell, his sexual indiscretions, his self-dealing, and his many hypocrisies. If you don't want to read that whole piece, Slate published a much condensed version (link here) that highlights the most scandalous allegations.

The article included details about how students at Falwell's university are prohibited from drinking and dancing and also published a photo of Falwell himself with his son and wife at the Wall nightclub in Miami. Like many clubbers, who include both straight and gay couples, Falwell has his shirt half unbuttoned and may be dancing.

Falwell claimed the photo was Photoshopped so the original photographer released a dozen more shots to confirm that Falwell was indeed there among the throngs of dancers, a wide grin on his face.

Then came a bizarre statement a few days later from Falwell himself about how he's asked the FBI to investigate some alleged coup attempt and "criminal smear campaign" by former board members and employees (details here). This included the bizarre claim that employees who shared their own emails with reporters had committed a crime.

This sort of gibberish is not uncommon from people who either know or suspect they're being investigated by law enforcement authorities. By evoking the FBI, it makes them sound like they're in the right, an often false impression.

Falwell may be aided by his closeness to Trump. But he should also look at Trump's history -- he long has made a habit of cutting people off at the knees who may injure him by association.

Needless to say, Falwell seems to be in some kind of downward, destructive meltdown. Good. Let him totally self destruct. I have no sympathy for a hypocrite like Falwell who peddles hate. And if he can get some of his dirt on Trump in the process, all the better.
