Could It Happen?

The April 2019 issue of the political magazine Washington Monthly has a thoughtful, terrifying article (link here) speculating what might happen should Donald Trump lose both the popular and electoral vote in 2020 but refuse to leave office, insisting that he actually won and that his opponent only appears to have one because of massive fraud.

I can remember liberals saying this would happen with George W. Bush and it never happened. And, I remember conservatives saying this about Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and it never happened.

But I could see it happening with Trump. He has trashed so many political norms and customs that he might have no problem triggering a slow motion coup as laid out in the linked article.

Arguably, the larger the percentage of Trump's loss, the less likely it is that this happens and the less likely it is that Republicans in Washington would back him on this. That's why it's imperative that each and every one of us makes sure to vote Trump out of office and urge everyone we know to vote the same.

Candidates are already running to be Trump's opponent in 2020. If you haven't done so already, you might consider volunteering for one of the campaigns. Every hour every one of us spends in working to defeat Trump in 2020 means the larger the margin of his loss.
