Heartless and Cruel

Every American presidential administration in modern times has deported undocumented immigrants, including children who accompany their parents. That is nothing new.

Notwithstanding its origin as a nation of immigrants, the reality today is that America is a much harder place to immigrate to than other first-world English-speaking nations like Great Britain, Canada, and Australia. That is because of laws made by Congress and not by any particular President.

Where there is difference, however, is in the severity and selectivity of enforcement. All but one President has focused on the more serious dangers, not every, single undocumented immigrant from south of the border.

For the first time in American history, the presidency of Donald Trump now has "zero tolerance" for people from certain countries, meaning people from nations with citizens of a darker skin. If you're not brown or Hispanic and have money and want to buy a condo at a Trump property, then you're no problem if you fly in with a check and overstay your visa.

More recently, Trump and his administration have dialed up their cruelty when it comes to immigrants from Latin America and other countries with darker-skinned peoples, many of whom are fleeing for their lives from corrupt governments, death squads, and murderous druglords. For the first time in American history, children of undocumented immigrants are being separated from parents and herded into kiddie internment camps (details here), where the youngest prisoners are barely out of diapers.

This is savage and heartless. Even conservative groups that have been strong supporters of Trump are now condemning his administration's brutality. Trump and his people have offered no explanation as to why his administration deviated from the practice of all past administrations, which was to keep detained families together, nor why harsh enforcement was even needed, given undocumented immigration totals are way down.

To add insult to injury, Trump cowardly refused to accept credit for his own brutal policy and lied about a fictional law that mandated separating children from families. He shamelessly lied and said "Democrats forced that law upon our nation. I hate it. I hate to see separation of parents and children."

That is 100 percent horseshit.

Not only does no law exist that children must be separated from parents and held in baby prison, and such a practice may actually violate federal law, a matter expected to be litigated in forthcoming days. Trump and Trump alone is responsible for what is happening to these young children.

I was ten years old when my parents immigrated to the United States. I was a native English speaker, but I nonetheless would have been traumitized if forcibly separated and put into a kiddie internment camp. I have no idea if we immigrated 100 percent legally, either, but then I'm white so Trump wouldn't care about me.

Some of the small children being separated and seized under Trump's order are much younger than ten and speak no English. No one has the communication skills to explain to them in ways they would understand. The psychological trauma they are facing will damage them for years to come.

This whole sorry affair only underscores the complete lack of moral values in the Trump administration. They could have followed the same policy as previous administrations and kept the families together.

But, no, they had to use innocent children as "a message," no matter how heartless and possibly illegal their own administrative actions.

Admitting to Lies

David Graham at The Atlantic wrote an incisive piece Friday (link here) about several media appearances Donald Trump made earlier in the day.

He focuses in part on a moment when Trump admitted lying to the American public and how he claimed that was perfectly all right. Trump was asked by reporters why he dictated a statement to the media that he knew contained lies about the infamous Trump Tower meeting when his staff and relatives met with Vladimir Putin's Kremlin operatives during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"That's irrelevant," Trump snapped at the reporter. "It's a statement to The New York Times, the phony, failing New York Times. That's not a statement to a high tribunal of judges. That's a statement to the phony New York Times."

(This admission of lies actually contains more new lies, including the false claim that the newspaper is failing when its profits are actually soaring.)

Graham comments about Trump's admission about lying: "the President is saying that it’s totally acceptable to lie to the press, and by extension the public, as long as he is not under oath in the justice system.... As a matter of law, this is true, but as a matter of character and leadership, it is not. The President is freely telling the public that he has no compunctions about lying through his teeth."

There you have it -- Trump has no problem lying to us, as long as we're not judges.

In a final note, Graham may not be entirely accurate when he says "as a matter of law" it's okay for an elected official to lie to the media. In certain situations, like in Trump's case, where there's an ongoing pattern showing obstruction of justice, lying to the media may further contribute to that criminal obstruction and provide more evidence to prosecutors in making their case.

The Best People

Or maybe Trump wasn't lying and thinks that people who launder money, cheat on their taxes, and engage in witness tampering are "the best people."

Trump's campaign manager will remain behind bars until his trial, which is still months away.

In other Trump personnel news, CNN broke the story (link here) that Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney and "fixer" who sweeps scandals under the rug, is definitely ready to flip and help prosecutors make a case against his client. The lawyer/fixer "has indicated to family and friends he is willing to cooperate with federal investigators to alleviate the pressure on himself and his family."

According to the news network, "Cohen has expressed anger with the treatment he has gotten from the President, who has minimized his relationship with Cohen, and comments from the President's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, the source said."

As I've said several times before here, Trump is his own worst enemy. He trashes someone from whom he expects absolute loyalty. How smart is that?

Given that Cohen had only three clients and devoted considerable hours daily to their needs, almost certainly he has a lot to tell prosecutors. One has to imagine they're already in touch.

Persistently Illegal Conduct

The New York attorney general filed suit yesterday against Donald Trump and his three oldest children for alleged "persistently illegal conduct" by Trump's personal charitable foundation. Among the charges include allegations that Trump used the nonprofit charity to pay off his business debts, to decorate a golf club he owns, and to fund a lavish sweepstakes at one of his campaign events.

If the attorney general is successful in court, Trump and his children would be forced to dissolve the foundation and barred from serving on nonprofit boards of directors. As well, a substantial fine would be imposed.

The matter has also been referred to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Now there's no way to know, but I think it's a good bet the IRS has already been looking into this and for a long time to boot. For all anybody knows, the Trumps may be deep in process of trying to fight an IRS action that has already been filed.

Suspicious activity by the Trump Foundation has long been known, given reportage in the past. It may seem to some that it took a long time for charges to be filed, but that's typical for complex financial investigations.

In response to the suit, Trump tweeted a ridiculous lie that the "charity" had donated more money than it had received in all income. The only way that could be possible would be if it was counterfeiting currency.

So if this means Cohen will now testify against Trump, it almost certainly will be a game changer in the whole sordid scandal.

The story was also confirmed by the New York Times (link here); however, their sources said the change was because of payment issues and also because of their particular experience. That could be the case, but it could also just be a smokescreen.

Thus it's not time to schedule the ticker-tape celebration parade, but it does mean we definitely should follow the news over the next few days to see what develops on the Cohen story. Cohen is widely expected to be arrested in the next few days, regardless of what happens with his defense counsel.

Nicholas Kristof at the New York Times wrote an excellent column (link here) about how Kim totally played the foolish Trump.

He writes: "Trump made a huge concession — the suspension of military exercises with South Korea. That’s on top of the broader concession of the summit meeting itself, security guarantees he gave North Korea and the legitimacy that the summit provides his counterpart, Kim Jong-un."

He continues: "Within North Korea, the ‘very special bond’ that Trump claimed to have formed with Kim will be portrayed this way: Kim forced the American president, through his nuclear and missile tests, to accept North Korea as a nuclear equal, to provide security guarantees to North Korea, and to cancel war games with South Korea that the North has protested for decades. In exchange for these concessions, Trump seems to have won astonishingly little."

At the risk of mixing too many metaphors, Trump bought Kim's magic beans and paid a high price for them.

NBC news published a great review of the event (link here) with the title "The Trump-Kim summit was big on style, short on substance." This short excerpt says it all:

"A question to ponder: What would the Republican Party have said if Barack Obama made this same deal and held the same meeting with North Korea’s dictator? How would they have reacted?"

Bottom line: Trump pulled the US out of a much better deal with Iran, a country with a far less developed nuclear program yet rushed to embrace a much worse deal with North Korea, a country with a far more developed nuclear program.

He paid a hell of a lot for those magic beans.

I thought of the book when I was reading Jeffrey Goldberg's superb short essay in The Atlantic yesterday (link here) with the title "A Senior White House Official Defines the Trump Doctrine: ‘We’re America, Bitch’" and the subtitle "The President believes that the United States owes nothing to anyone—especially its allies."

Essentially, Donald Trump has embraced the policy of being the ugliest American abroad. He is brash, crude, greedy, grasping, and indifferent to other nations' peoples and needs. He wants to acquire as much as possible and fuck the consquences and anybody hurt in the. It's an official policy of smash and grab.

While this might lead to short-term gains, and could have worked a hundred years ago, it won't work today and will be highly destructive to America's long-term interests.

Russia is a gangster nation. No wonder Trump admires Vladimir Putin so much. He wants to turn America into a gangster nation, too.

Absolute Disaster

The G7 meeting this past weekend in Canada was a catastrophic failure for Donald Trump. He shattered norms, offended everyone, and acted like a pompous asshole. In the course of two days, Trump turned the world against the United States and offended every one of the country's closest allies.

The Guardian published a withering but excellent op-ed (link here) about how Trump in one weekend destroyed America's legacy as an international leader.

"Trump’s disruption of the international order moved from annoying threat to damaging reality," the piece opens. Trump went to Quebec only under protest. He made no effort to compromise on his tariff war. He arrived late for meetings, chided the other leaders and left early. He snubbed the final communique. He tweeted insults to his Canadian hosts from his plane as he headed off. By the time his North Korean summit ends later this week, Trump may be on chummier terms with another authoritarian dictator than with America’s democratic allies."

One is left wondering why Trump did this and how he thought it was help America and Americans. Some speculated that he thought it would make him look tough as he heads to his meeting with the North Korean dictator.

In reality, it made Trump look mentally unstable, delusional, and downright dangerous. Trump's instinct is often to choose the most self-destructive option when facing a choice, and that certainly seemed the case this past weekend.

The American presidency is now in crisis. Something must be done and soon before things get rapidly worse.

This past week, Time magazine published a very comprehensive article (link here) about the nearly two hundred contradictory and conflicting arguments Donald Trump has made about his campaign's collusion with Russia and that country's meddling in the 2016 American election.

For instance, in one sentence he will insist that no meddling occurred, and then a few sentences later he'll admit meddling occured but it wasn't his fault and then try to blame President Obama.

For a man who insists he's innocent, he spends an awful lot of time acting guilty. And if he was innocent, why would he have to lie so much with his defenses?
