Jonathan Chait wrote a great piece for New York magazine yesterday (link here) with the title "Trump Is Fulfilling Russia’s Dream of Splitting the Western Alliance."

The article summaries in detail how Trump has repeatedly attacked America's closet allies, particularly in the last few days, which then either directly or indirectly helps Putun.

Donald Trump refuses to criticize Vladimir Putin and rarely criticizes Russia. He also goes out of his way to help Russia, often putting Russian interests before the United States.

This can lead to one of several conclusions: (1) Trump is Russia's useful idiot, regularly helping them out of sheer admiration; (2) Trump doesn't want to criticize anything Russian because his company owes Russian oligarchs hundreds of millions dollars; and (3) Trump is a Russian-owned intelligence asset.

While (3) certainly seems plausible, given Trump's die-hard loyalty to Putin, it also beggars belief and seems like the plot of a sensational thriller. I think (2) is more plausible -- Trump is often obsequious to those who can hurt him in the wallet. His company owes hundreds of millions to a few Putin-connected oligarchs. So he will go out of his way to praise lavishly their totalitarian government to the point his fawning because painfully obvious.

Of course (1) is a possibility, too, but is Trump actually that much of a moron?

The Hateful Heart

Charles Blow at the New York Times wrote a really excellent and compelling column yesterday (link here) about Donald Trump's highly controversial role in the Central Park Five case from nearly thirty years ago. Blow writes about the current President: "when my enthusiasm for resisting this vile man and his corrupt administration starts to flag, I remember the episode that first revealed to me the darkness at Trump’s core."

In April 1989, a young woman out jogging in Central Park was beaten and gang raped. Five young men aged fourteen to sixteen were arrested for this crime who had been part of a larger group engaging in random muggings.

Although DNA evidence confirmed none of the five arrested were involved in the rape, they were coerced into making false confessions and all were convicted and given lengthy prison sentences. After the men had been in prison, some for as long as twelve years, another individual came forward, admitted to raping the woman, and his DNA confirmed he was telling the truth.

The Central Park Five ultimately saw their convictions overturned and they were released after having spent years behind bars, serving time for a crime that DNA proved they had not committed.

Here is where Trump comes into the picture. Before the five men were tried, Trump took out ads in all the major New York newspapers demanding the death penalty for the five. "I want to hate these muggers and murderers," Trump wrote in his ads. "They should be forced to suffer... Hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done." In the ad, Trump also called for suspension of criminals' civil and constitutional rights.

After the Central Park Five were exonerated and released, Trump was nonetheless defiant years after the fact. He still insisted they were guilty. He has never conceded science proved him wrong.

Trump still holds hate in his heart for these innocent men. Their race likely has something to do with it -- all five are not white. And the rape victim is.

We have a man in the White House who loves to hate. Who never admits he's wrong even when science proves that he is.

That is a person unfit for any public office, let alone the highest in the land.

Babbling Fool

The Washington Post broke the story last night (link here) about how Donald Trump spent nearly the entire time in a closed-door meeting yesterday at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), that was supposed to be about hurricane preparedness, instead talking almost entirely about himself.

Senior FEMA officials had travelled to Washington to meet with Trump, who was supposed to learn about what the agency would do this year during the 2018 hurricane season. Instead, they were entirely silent as Trump babbled on and on about his allegedly negotiating airplane deals, his imagined popularity, his trip to Singapore, his cabinet, North Korea, coal, the Republican Party, military purchasing, and much more.

Trump's verbal vomit came only ten seconds into the briefing when he interrupted the first speaker, the Secretary of Defense, before he had even finished his first sentence. Meanwhile, the silent and subservient Vice-President took written notes almost the entire time Trump babbled.

Lest Trump accuse the Post of "fake news," they are prepared -- they have a complete audio recording of the entire closed-door event.

This was certainly not the first time Trump has turned a supposed learning event for him into an opportunity for self-flattery. Before he had even been President a week, he did the same thing at a ceremony at the Central Intelligence Agency.

At moments like this, one cannot help but wonder if Trump is a babbling figurehead, but that there's someone else -- or a small group -- who's really acting as President behind the scenes.

New Legal Landmines

The last several news cycles brought reports that could spell very bad news for Donald Trump in the near future.

First came news that Special Council Robert Mueller, who is conducting the criminal investigation into Trump and his associates, has notified the judge in Paul Manafort's criminal prosecution that the latter has attempted witness tampering (details here and here). Manafort, you will recall, was Trump's campaign chairman until scandal forced him to step down.

A hearing will be held in a few days to determine what will happen. It's certainly possible Manafort's bail could be revoked and he would then be held behind bars until trial.

How does this impact Trump, you might be asking. The answer is that this development puts even more pressure on Manafort and puts him in greater legal peril. Thus, it makes it more likely that Mueller will be able to "flip" Manafort, who will then assist prosecutors and agree to testify against Trump.

The second batch of bad news came yesterday with the report that the special master appointed by the court in the potential criminal prosecution of Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer and "fixer," has ruled that almost nothing in the huge haul of materials seized by the FBI from Cohen's office is protected by attorney-client privilege (details here).

So if Cohen was involved in any criminal activity for Trump or with Trump's knowledge, evidence about that would not be barred to criminal prosecutors targeting Trump. Only materials directly dealing with legal business could be excluded.

Just like with Manafort, this legal setback dials up the pressure on Cohen to "flip" and cooperate with prosecutors, and thus end up testifying against Trump. Both Manafort and, in particular, Cohen are believed to have knowledge of Trump's possible criminal activity.

The third development also came yesterday when the judge in one of the civil lawsuits against the President ruled that Trump can be directly questioned by attorneys representing the woman suing Trump (details here). Being deposed as a defendant by the opposing side is rarely good news, and this is no exception.

Ironically, when Bill Clinton was deposed in a civil lawsuit back when he was President, that set off the chain reaction that led to his impeachment (and unsuccessful attempt to remove him from office). Given that Trump famously lies and habitually, being under oath with the penalty of perjury is not a good place for him to be.

It may take several weeks to several months for all of these developments to play out. Some or any of them could come to naught, but the bottom line is that if they do, Trump's legal position will not have improved.

So things won't get any better for him, and they could get a lot worse. Stay tuned.

Bad News/Good News

The United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, the appeal about whether a business could discriminate against LGBT patrons by claiming "religous grounds."

The high court ruled for the bakery; however, it was a very narrow ruling that did not touch the issue of anti-LGBT discrimination. Indeed, the court's language all but said that secondary status for LGBT persons in these disputes was not allowable.

As the Los Angeles Times observed in a well-written news article (link here) on the decision: The Court "emphasized the importance of equal rights for gays and lesbians, and it largely rejected the claim that store owners have broad religious liberty rights to turn away customers because of their sexual orientation. Although some may object to same-sex marriages, said Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, 'it is a general rule that such objections do not allow business owners and other actors in the economy and in society to deny protected persons equal access to goods and services under a neutral and generally applicable public accommodations law.'"

The court ruled as it did in this case because of the way the particular bakeshop had been treated when the matter was originally before the state.

Nonetheless, religous zealots almost immediately and falsely claimed this ruling was a huge win for their side and that anti-LGBT business practices were constitutional. The high court, however, made it very clear if another case comes before them soon, they will rule on the side of LGBT rights.

Hopefully the latter will happen and establish landmark protections for all LGBT Americans.

Absolutist Ambitions

On Saturday, the New York Times broke the story (link here) that some of Donald Trump's attorneys sent a letter to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who leads the criminal investigation of the President and his associates, which asserted that their client cannot be forced to answer questions or to testify, that he is immune from obstruction of justice charges, that he can direct the Justice Department to do whatever he wants, and that he can pardon himself.

Such a position completely and conveniently ignores established law as repeatedly reaffirmed by the Supreme Court over a number of presidencies. Many of the positions are the same ones Richard Nixon tried to argue before the high court, which were all soundly rejected.

Not surprisingly, legal experts and political analysist were outraged by the letter. At Vox, Matthew Yglesias penned a column (link here) with the title "Trump’s legal memo to Robert Mueller is a recipe for tyranny" and the subtitle "A clear and present danger to the rule of law." Trump and his legal team, he writes, are trying to argue that he, as President, is a "totally unchecked executive whose existence would pose a fundamental threat to American values."

On the op-ed page at the New York Times on Sunday, former United States attorney and deputy assistant attorney general Harry Litman wrote an item (link here) with the blunt title "Donald Trump Thinks He Is a King." He argues that the President's team is effectively asserting that Trump can simply ignore the law as chief executive. Litman then picks apart their claims piece by piece.

Reading these, I was reminded of how, at the Washington Post in March, conservative columnist and lawyer Jennifer Rubin authored a piece (link here) that eerily predicted the arguments the President might make with the title "No, Trump cannot do whatever he wants with the Justice Department." She writes: "when the president says he can do anything he wants with the DOJ, he’s talking like an absolute monarch, not the head of the executive branch in a constitutional system of government." Indeed, even the British king, at the height of his powers in an earlier century, did not have the right to ignore the law.

This all leads to the question: why did Trump's legal team send such a ridiculous letter that ignores established law? The lawyers may have been ordered to do so by their client, producing as a result a distorted and contorted missive that can't help but pretend up is down.

Another explanation might be that the President's team is trying to move the so-called "Overton Window," an attempt to increase public acceptance of deeply unpopular idea. While they may not be trying to sell the whole legal theory, they may be able to use part of it convincingly.

In a way, they're attempting to win by erosion -- eroding the public resistance to undemocratic ideas so that they can be snuck in quietly and made effective. This is a common practice amongst dictators and those who strive to be among them.

Americans must be resolute in resisting this attempt to dismantle the democratic system. Trump is asking for dictatorial powers, and he must be resoundly denied that request.

Thursday in Texas

On Thursday, Donald Trump traveled to Texas. The White House announced the trip as being about meeting and consoling survivors and victim families of the recent school shooting in El Paso, Texas.

In reality, the trip was so Trump could attend a high price dinner for big donors. The survivor and victim event was hastily cobbled together so they could meet Trump for a few minutes at the airport where they waited for hours.

As he boarded the plane for Texas, Trump said "We are going to Dallas, we are going to Houston. We are going to have a little fun today."

After the family event, a mother whose child was killed spoke to reporters about her impressions of Trump. He was unresponsive to the parents' suggestions and repeatedly talked about arming teachers instead. "It was like talking to a toddler." Trump also repeatedly talked about how the shooter was dressed and repeatedy called him "wacky."

Trump's lack of empathy is no surprise. He has been widely criticized after visiting or speaking on the telephone with tragedy survivors and victims' family members when he has made other insensitive and inappropriate comments. He also has made similarly tone-deaf remarks while visiting survivors of natural disasters.

Perhaps the most glaring example of his insensitivity was when he visited parents of students killed in yet another school shooting and he was unknowingly photographed holding a card with reminders of sympathetic things to read.

George W. Bush was an incompetent President but at least he was genuinely warm and sympathetic when visiting those touched by tragedy. Trump, however, has all the empathy of a wet rag.

In light of that development, the Los Angeles Times published an excellent piece yesterday (link here) with the title "Only Trump would rush into a North Korea summit that's so unlikely to succeed."

These excerpts are very well stated: "Trump and his team have proven themselves to be erratic, impulsive and transactional, whereas the North Koreans and the Chinese are strategic, experienced and calculating.... Trump will want to be able to use the American right’s language of victory — terms such as “complete verifiable irreversible denuclearization” — whether they are fully embraced by both sides or not. He will not concern himself with the fine print.... Here is what it won’t accomplish, the goal that we hear the most about: The elimination of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.... Only a President Trump would rush into an agreement so unlikely to achieve its supposed goal."

Nuclear negotiations are like advanced surgery. On your team, you need highly skilled surgeons with the best tools. Sending Trump is like sending a circus clown with a rusty hacksaw and a dirty thread and needle to do the job.

The news media has already widely reported he hasn't read any of the briefing materials necessary before the meeting nor has he had any extensive oral briefings. Trump also habitually ignores the advice of legal and military professionals, as has been reported by the media many times.

Trump also famously can't keep his mouth shut and can't keep from making self-damaging statements. The best example of that is his admitting to NBC's Lester Holt on camera that he committed obstruction of justice.

Past American Presidents have refused to meet with any North Korean head of state unless they agree to complete and permanent denuclearization. Trump exacted no commitments nor promises before meeting with Kim, thus handing him a huge victory before he even leaves Washington.

Ticking Time Bomb

NPR ran an excellent piece yesterday (link here) with actual audio clips about how Donald Trump's attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen, was absolutely ruthless in representing his client, using sleazy methods of which is client approved.

The story is available in both print and audio, but to get the full effect, the listen is well worth it.

It also makes the clear point that while Cohen was totally loyal to Trump, the latter repeatedly betrayed his dogged attorney. With Cohen now facing the possibility of charges that could land him in prison for the rest of his life, if convicted, the incentive to cooperate with prosecutors against his former client will be immensely tempting.

And given that he's not yet charged, negotiations with prosecutors may already be well underway.

Many legal experts believe Cohen will be Trump's undoing. Time will tell. Stay tuned.

Resignation

Missouri's scandal-plagued, Trump-supporting Republican governor resigned abruptly on Tuesday after less than two years in office (details here). He was ensnared in multiple controversies and facing impeachment.

All in all, his problems and controversies were a lot smaller than Donald Trump's. But at least the governor took the honorable path and stepped down for the good of his state.

Missouri's Republican state legislators also showed a courage that's been all but lacking in GOP members of Congress in Washington. In Missouri, they weren't afraid to impeach a chief executive from their own party -- they put the good of their citizenry before political party.

Resignation is the usual route for politicians caught up in scandals that won't go away. The best example, of course, is Richard Nixon.

In all honesty, no matter how bad things get, I have a bad feeling Trump would never voluntarily resign, no matter how much is eventually exposed. His ego wouldn't allow it, I don't think, and he also wouldn't want to let go of his pardon power, which he may want to spare his children from criminal prosecution.

The only solution is to impeach and remove from office. If that does not happen, then hopefully Democrats will take control of at least one house of Congress. That's why volunteering for a campaign and voting this November are both so critically important.

The power to save this democracy rests in our hands.
