The Broken Promise

The New York Times published an excellent editorial yesterday titled "President Trump Breaks a Promise on Transgender Rights" (link here).

On the campaign trail, the piece notes, Trump promised to protect LGBT Americans from violence and oppression. The White House then reiterated that on January 31 when it said, "President Donald J. Trump is determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the L.G.B.T.Q. community."

Less than a month later, Trump explicitly broke that promise by rescinding President Obama's protections for transgender school students. The Times editorial specifically names Attorney General Jeffrey Sessions as the culprit behind this cowardly act.

Sessions made it a priority to repeal the transgender protections. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos opposed him (the matter was in her department's purview, not Sessions).

Sessions and DeVos took their dispute to Trump. And Trump sided with Sessions, breaking his own campaign promise and White House promise of last month in the process.

This excerpt from the Times piece is right on the money: "Trump has demonstrated time and again that his stated personal convictions are malleable. A genuine champion of gay and transgender rights would have steered clear of politicians like Mr. Sessions and Vice President Mike Pence, who have gone to great lengths to vilify and oppress gay and transgender Americans."

This broken promise foreshadows what will happen with other LGBT issues that reach the Oval Office. People like Sessions will pressure Trump into accepting their anti-LGBT policies.

And he'll fold like a cheap suit every time.

As I believe I've said here before, the man has no moral compass.
