Abdication

Stephen Collinson wrote a smart piece yesterday (link here) with a candid but blunt title that says it all: "Trump's outrageous refusal to lead is making the pandemic worse."

The coronavirus pandemic keeps spiraling out of control. Day after day, a record number of new cases are reported.

Yet Donald Trump seems to have abdicated from doing anything about it. His senior staff praises him endlessly for what he's done, virtually ignoring how everything keeps getting worse and worse while he does nothing except making matters more dangerous by acting as if everything is fine and the crisis is over.

"Not only is Trump refusing to act in a manner appropriate to the magnitude of the emergency, he is using the country's loudest megaphone in a way almost guaranteed to make it worse, from presiding over a White House campaign to discredit the lifelong work of Dr. Anthony Fauci -- a new front in his war on science and truth -- to undermining efforts by local officials to convince people to wear masks to slow the spread of the disease," writes Collinson.

Trump is as tone deaf as the Titanic captain promoting a shuffleboard contest on the Promenade Deck whilst the ship listed badly from taking in thousands of gallons of water through a ripped hull. Indeed, he demonstrated as much this past week by spending considerable time doing a photo op from the Oval Office promoting canned beans for the Goya Food Company because the CEO had said nice things about him — instead of devoting himself tirelessly to fighting the virus (details here).

This nightmare can end if we all vote to remove Trump on November third.
